Had a good one yesterday, late at night, riding the train home. This black guy sits down next to me, baggy pants and all. I'm playing DF, he glaces at my screen, jumps up and exclaims "This guy is in the fucking MATRIX!"
Made my day.

Playing a bit before class a week ago, and the guy next to me (wearing a Minecraft shirt no less) asks me what game this is. I proceed to explain to him that it is part of the inspiration of Minecraft, and show him around my fort, and load up the Watercannon map I downloaded as an example of the crazy engineering possible.

He just said "oh, that's cool. I like Starcraft too."

The commons answer go from:
"What are you reading?" to which I replay "Dwarves dwarving."
When clarifications are delivered they go to:
"How can you tell what's going on?" to which I replay "There is nothing much to tell. Dwarves are dwarving." with some mottled comments here and there of "How can/do you play it?" and "Oh! I think I saw a face there!"

Disinterest usually, but my favorite from a friend seeing it for the first time was "Are you designing a circuit board?". Because it almost is like a circuit board in a sense.

Generally my reactions are from my parents... which range from "Uh-huh" to "I really don't think you should be playing that game, it's not good for you."

Stupid parents think I'm gonna be a psychopath thanks to DF. D:

and so on. I get the same reaction for roguelikes too, since I tend to play them in ASCII if possible (just a preference I've developed over the years)

My dad played rogue itself. On the original machines it was written for.

He was intrigued by dwarf fortress, but didn't think it was particularly special.  Though, he was a bit confused by the fact that I was not playing as any one dwarf, but as their hive-mind.

I bet his rogue backround would make him pretty good at adventure mode.

Adventure Mode is significantly harder than original rogue. There is just a lot more going on, and the controls are more complex.
