Round One, Turn Three - The Philosopher King

Quote from: The History of Albion
1079 - The Jarl of Finster arrives, sacking the City of Verona and establishing his own Jarldom in Albion.
1081-2 - The Sack of Sitra:
  - During this conflict, several minor nations switched sides in treachery to the Kingdom of Primeria.
  - The Conclave of Sitra was destroyed following a stalemate detente between powers.
1090 - The Philosopher Count Robert the Just ascends the throne of Mercassia.

The various states of Albion embraced a period of relative peace and security during the late 1080s, bar the bluffs and blackmails of various minor powers.  This balance was disrupted by the appearance of Robert the Just, a holy man of noble birth and conduct.  Robert proved a charismatic orator of the type seen once a generation and of inviolate virtue and chivalry.  His influence threatened to shift power ever increasingly into the hands of the growing Kingdom of Primeria.

Quote from: Events
The Primerian Ambassador to the Jonasburg Barony successfully negotiates some marriages between the courtiers of the various states.  Relations between Primeria and Jonasburg are presently Pleased.

Robert the Just has ascended to the position of Philosopher Count of Mercassia.  His influence is beginning to flip Jonasburg and the Pleasure Lands over to alliance with his legal masters, the Primerians.

Primeria: (Major Opportunity) Robert the Just is an honourable man guided purely by his conscience and code of conduct.  He is also massively persuasive and will flip two minor nations over to the Kingdom as allies (with a base relation of Pleased) next turn.  All you need to do is keep him alive.  Prevent Mercassia being captured or subjugated and stop Robert from being assassinated and the two nations will be yours.

Liga Bentanii: (Minor Crisis) The philosophies of Robert the Just have caused a great yearning among the common citizens of the League for the voice of God, notably lacking in the profit-minded hegemony.  If you do not mandate the construction of (or capture) a new Cathedral (1 Social Inf.) by the end of the turn a new Displeased power base will appear within the League and remain Displeased until a cathedral or equivalent is provided.

In addition, unless you are able to acquire 2 new Economic Infrastructure or a new vassal or ally by the end of the turn, you will suffer a massive financial crash.  Your chancellor notes that the Duke of Phantoni presently has a large army and not a great deal of money; he might be amenable to a deal.

Finster: You have two turns remaining to satisfy your people with either more religion or more arable land and avert a revolt.

Phantoni: Your treasurer is deeply alarmed by the state of your finances; unless you acquire more money or disband part of the army, you are facing bankruptcy within the next few years.  He suggests employing the army in some deal with one of the other great powers.

Iron Wall: (Major Crisis) The Pleasure Lands are deeply swayed by the words of Robert the Just.  If Mercassia does not either willingly switch its alliance or get conquered this turn, the Pleasure Lands will flip alliance to Primeria.

In light of the current crisis, the aristocrats have stopped their grumbling about a new grand army or cathedral and are busy worrying about losing their last remaining ally instead.

Ferdicis: (Major Crisis) The Jonasburg Barony is deeply swayed by the words of Robert the Just.  If Mercassia does not either willingly switch its alliance or get conquered this turn, the Baron of Jonasburg will flip alliance to Primeria.

You also have one turn remaining to capture or build 1 Economic Infrastructure or a financial cataclysm will occur.

Special Condition: It is possible to Assassinate Robert the Just.  An assassination attempt will cost 2 Wealth and has a 1/3 chance of succeeding.  Protecting Robert the Just is as simple as assigning Might to bodyguard him (this costs no PC, but the Might can't be used for anything else while bodyguarding him).  On an assassination attempt, the assassin automatically fails and 1 Might is lost.

Otherwise, the best way to kill Robert the Just is to capture Mercassia.  If Robert the Just should flip alliance willingly to another side, the Pleasure Lands and Jonasburgs will flip over to that side next turn if Robert is still alive.  Note that in order to do this you would need to throw a total of 7.2 Influence at Mercassia this turn to make them flip (and all of it geared toward a single side as the new master).  Robert the Just is a philosopher king and thus extremely difficult to bribe (300% normal cost).

Build the social infrastructure unless military happenings* or the death of the philosopher king should occur. Reserve for last action post of turn.

King Renis the Third of Primeria was a man who was proud of his achievements, sometimes unashamedly so. But he had means and ability to realize those achievements, so there was little so far that could prove him wrong.
This was no different, as he final work on the Alliance Hall was completed - a great wing added to the castle, which was a symbol of the burgeoning network of dependencies, allies and vassals that Renis now controlled across Albion. With a magnificent round chamber, with marble floors, granite pillars and the grand ceiling fashioned of the strongest oak and tall, stained glass windows decorated with battle scenes and important historical events fro Primerian history. The look of the chamber was finished off with flags and emblems of the involved states hung on the walls of the round chamber and a set of rooms and cells placed next to it in the wing to house the ambassadors and scribes.

As the work on the Hall was nearing completion, Renis received the letter from the Ferdici family, arrogantly threatening one of the alliance members. It was clear to Renis that the hubris of the merchants was unbounded by logic or power, unless directly brought against them. it was then he decided to make a definitive step. It was time to test the hall too, and what a perfect coincidence this was!

The ambassadors and plenipotentiaries of the associated countries was gathered in the round chamber and seated under the banners of their countries and lords with Renis taking seat on the throne under a splendid green flag with glistening golden lilies on it, flanked by his dignitaries and knights on both sides. He raised his hand to quiet the rumor in the chamber and spoke up.

"Let it be known that Primeria shall take no threat lightly, and that this kingdom shall not be bullied! We are stalwart defenders of our allies, we are defenders of those unjustly assaulted, we are protectors of those who cannot resist the pressure of the nations bigger than them in unjust conquest!
We have received a letter from the merchant Ferdici Family, threatening Count Robert the Just, on account of his philosophy and words! Now tell me, my dear lords, in what fashion should I respond? Is it fitting for a shopkeeper to send instructions to a sovereign, time and time again? After the humiliation we inflicted upon him? after the magnanimity we have shown to him and his allies who now rightly sit in this chamber under our protection?
I tel you all this to make it clear that Primeria shall no longer respond to threats and aggression! The Alliance of Primeria* from now on shall look over all its members and threaten direct war on anyone who seeks to pressure any member of the alliance with Primeria fielding troops and money needed and requiring its allies to do the same in proportionate amount, for both defense of any member and offense on anyone who seeks harm on the Alliance. Voice your opinions and contact your lords."

*Essentially its asking all allies and vassals for a NATO-like structure where mutual defense is provided for everyone with common involvement and preventive wars possible with Primerian lead and backing.

Primeria threatens war with all forces and means possible (up to 6 might + all of allies) on anyone who harms Robert the Just or interferes with the county in any way (in particular the Ferdici who sent threats to Primeria already).

E:The hall is total fluff.. for now.

The Alliance Hall

After King Renis had finished a Delegate from the Jarldom stood up. Behind him the banner of Finster a golden rune (the one standing for wealth) on a bloodred background (there had been almost a diplomatic incident when the Finsterian Emissaries wanted to paint the banner in real blood and not just in red color). LIke the rest of the delegation from Finster he didn't fit right in. In contrary to richly clothed nobles in almost gaudy coloured clothes, the Jarldoms representatives were clothed in simple leather and fur affairs, in solemn brown, black and grey. Most delegations had given them a bit space in the otherwise overcrowded hall making them stand apart a few feet from everybody else. The Spokesman, was an old man with clear blue eyes and white hair. A Man known by the Finsterians as Helmgar Silvertongue, behind his back though rather Helmgar Brownnose, since he had given up the life as a raider for that as a diplomat and had grown fat and rich.
His Voice was soft, too soft for his grim, babaric looks.

The Jarldom of Finster has always valued it's allies in Primeria. They supported us in the Dark Days of the Sack of Sitra and back then our Jarl had sworn his loyality to King Renis. Today we wish to renew this claim of loyality, by offering our Gold and our Strength.

he waved with a hand and from somewhere in the back in the hall strong warriors brought chests. Half a dozen. When all had arrayed the chests in a row, they opened them in unison revealing their golden content.

Six Thousand Hroki* of Gold and Silver. In addition the Jarldom offers it's Men in the defence of any of Primeria's allies and Primeria itself.

6 Wealth are given to Primeria as an offer of renewed Alliance

*Hroki: A Finsterian Unit to measure Weight

The Jarldom of Finster

With the recent economic Growth the Warriors of the Jarldom were growing ever more restless, the Faith of Sitra was spreading like a pestilence. This would not do. Putting his Wealth to use a Temple would be build to teh Old Gods, the first of it kind. A magnificent thing, with a roof of beaten gold, it's wooden supports made from Oaks that had been moved and replanted with great care so that living and growing Oaks would stand inside the temple and support some of it's structure. In the midst of the Temple a hole had been left open to let light in for a small grove of ashtrees.
And finally great statues of marble imported from Mercassia and steel, iron and gems imported from the Homelands of Finster would be raised in honor to the Gods, Heroes and the Ancestors.
People flocked to this wondrous temple and the Faith to the Old Gods was renewed.

But that was not all. Many new imigrants had arrived from Finster, without lands, without a name, in hope of finding new riches in these foreign lands. To prevent overeager young men to raid for themselves they were recruited by the Jarl. Over five thousand of them flocked to the new raiding armies being prepared.

Build 1 Social Infrastructure: 6 Wealth, 6 PC
Raise 4 Might: 2,4 Wealth, 2,4 PC

In light of the grave threat posed by the Primerians against the other merchants, the Doge took time out of running his business ventures to compose three letters.

Indeed you have!  My mistake.  You have 3 Wealth (edited into the master sheet).

Still busy with girlfriend and away from home computer, so no update today.  Feel free to continue posturing until tomorrow evening!

Ahem.  Pardon me for the unexpected hiatus.  Girlfriend went away for a couple of days, but instead was wracked with weird back pain (painkillers did nothing).  Actually need to disappear again (blargh!) so we may not see an update until Monday.  Sorry guys, been a rough week for the GM.  :(

6 Wealth are given to Primeria as an offer of renewed Alliance

Build 1 Social Infrastructure: 6 Wealth, 6 PC
Raise 4 Might: 2,4 Wealth, 2,4 PC

Announce intent to ally with Ferdicis

Quote from: Events
Finster transfers 6 Wealth to Primeria.
Finster builds 1 Social Infrastructure and raises 4 Might (total cost 8.4 Wealth).

A new faction has arisen in the Jarldom of Finster!  The Theocrats form from the various priests and acolytes of the Old Gods who flock to the new lands of Finster and the newly erected temple.  They begin Pleased with the Jarl and hold 0.6 Clout's worth of influence (matching that of the Aristocratic faction).

Finster now has 1 unassigned Influence that it may assign freely.

Quote from: Diplomacy
Doge Benesuto of the Benetsiyan League and Patrician Leonardo of the Ferdicis announce an alliance, sealed by the marriage between Donaldo Benesuto and Carla Ferdici.  There is much rejoicing.

It was a high summer day in 1091 when the Philosopher Count Robert the Just's conscience was overcome.  His ties to Primeria had been ones of duty rather than loyalty, and relations between Mercassia and Primeria were never more than cordial.  Perhaps, had Primeria had time to use influence to bond the guardians more closely to them, Robert might not have made the decisions he did.  Or at least not so cheaply.

Even the incorruptible have their price, and Robert the Just charged the Ferdicis a nation's ransom for his.

Quote from: Events
Robert the Just has defected!  The County of Mercassia has switched alliance to the Ferdicis at a total cost of 30 Wealth.

The Ferdicis transfer 22.25 Wealth to Mercassia.
The Bentanii transfer 7.75 Wealth to Mercassia.

The Ferdicis transfer 2 Might to Mercassia to serve as bodyguards.

As a result of Robert's change of allegiance, the Jonasburg Barony and Pleasure Lands are no longer under threat of changing sides.  If Robert survives to the next turn, their relations with both their allied masters and with Mercassia will rise to Pleased as a result.

Mercassia immediately recruits 2 Might at a cost of 1.8 Wealth.  Robert offers 2 Wealth per Might to any nation willing to sell him more (as in direct sale, not mercenary work).
