So Australia's Fair Work Commission has ruled that Sunday penalty rates will be slashed.

Because people in retail and hospitality apparently earn too much.

Apparently it's supposed to increase jobs, since employers will obviously use the savings to hire more staff instead of continuing with their current rosters and pocketing the difference as profits.
As far as hospitality is concerned sunday penalty rates basically just results in full time salary staff always getting sunday shifts to save money on casuals.

Melbourne Antifa Members clock Andrew Bolt around the head in a suprise assault, with video footage. Andrew Bolt is one of Rupert Murdoch's papers "opinion" writers, e.g. a Fox news style provocateur.

"TO ALL those who called me with sympathy for being attacked on Tuesday by masked protesters: stop it. Sympathy is for losers." <= That's his latest headline after being attacked, that's how far right wing this guy is.

Actually I can only really laugh because he's not hurt and he really is a cunt (excuse my language). he has a smug article up at the moment saying how he's against gay marriage because someone on the pro-gay-marriage side got mad at a reactionary christian's hate speech. And "civil discourse is more important than gay marriage" so he has to side with the reactionary christians ... somehow.

Did the first guy smack him with a water balloon or something? Because I see a puff of water or something when he lands his punch from behind.

edit: Yeah, article says 'a substance'.

Actually on the Andrew Bolt anti-same sex marriage thing, he says he sided with the anti side because the proponents of SSM haven't upheld "civil discourse". I decided to look into it a little to see what people were so angry about.

http://www.couriermail.com.au/rendezview/margaret-court-wants-free-speech-this-is-it/news-story/c0fe0833e6c6814d0dbd8aa33ac1d139

For the record, the person slammed for making the anti-same sex marriage comments said things including comparing gay parents to "Hitler, the devil and Communism". So that's the polite political discourse on SSM that Andrew Bolt sides with. This should give you an idea why people don't especially like Andrew Bolt.

Another thing is that he's a hardline historical revisionist / denier about the genocide of the Australian native population.

Whites aren’t making Aboriginal children twice more likely to wag school.

Whites aren’t making Aboriginal women 34 times more likely to be hospitalised by their men.

Whites aren’t making Aboriginal children five times more likely to be hospitalised after an assault, or nearly 10 times more likely to need removal from their dangerous homes.

Whites aren’t making many Aborigines out bush choose to live where there are no jobs.
Asshole ... we kicked them off all the good land now the only land that's left to them is the shitty scrub. Then we didn't provide infrastructure for them. It's their homeland. It is in fact our fault as a nation that we didn't spend any money to develop livable standards for the remote parts of the nation that have black people there. You should see how much money they spend ensuring that rural white people have services.

Another thing he's big on is denying that the Stolen Generations ever occured. It was an era in which official policy was to remove any mixed race aboriginal children from parents and place them with white families, the idea was that blackness would be bred out. A small number of revisionists claim it never happened (despite a fair amount of insider documentary evidence) and that any removals were merely warm hearted attempts to save children from their evil abusive black parents.

Pride in one's culture is integral to a healthy society. The treatment of Australian aborigines systematically undermines their ability to develop pride in their own cultural background and heritage. It's likely too late to change this now, but a far better approach would have been to follow the example of societies like New Zealand, which celebrates and embraces its native Maori culture as part of its national identity.

That... was actually a lot better of a sentiment than I expected from the outset.

I was expecting the usual nationalist bullshit that accompanies it, "and their lack of pride is why they're in such a shit situation, it's all their fault, we shouldn't help them fix their mess, ra ra ra"

So uh

Good on you, I guess?

feels backhanded of me but I actually am a bit surprised so I'm Wording badly right now.

Cardinal George Pell, essentially the third in command of the Catholic Church, maybe even a preferatus, we don't know yet, has been formally charged by Victoria Police over historic sexual assault allegations. While Australia lacks an extradition treaty with the Vatican, Pell has stated that he will return to Sydney when his doctor gives him clearance to fly.

As Minchin put it best: there's a bell that tolls and it has a Pellian knell.

And in case Catholics are feeling alone in the arena of systemic child abuse, dozens to hundreds of young girls are being married to older men as child brides within Australia every year by Islamic clerics.

Ugh. At least the Australian law is sane (although only changed in 2013?) so those dudes can be prosecuted.

Jehovah's Witnesses => JW => JDubs

http://www.smh.com.au/national/jehovahs-witnesses-did-not-report-1006-alleged-sex-abusers-to-police-royal-commission-told-20150726-gil1u7.html

Quote
The Jehovah's Witness Church in Australia received allegations of child sexual abuse involving more than 1000 of its members over a 60-year period but did not report a single claim to police, a royal commission has heard.

Instead, the church, which has almost 70,000 active members, followed its policy of handling allegations internally.

The opening day of the hearing into the Jehovah's Witnesses at the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse was told that church elders blamed at least two victims for their sexual abuse.

The commission heard that alleged abusers could be cast out of the church if claims were proven but a requirement that at least two witnesses give evidence to an internal judicial committee meant many alleged perpetrators were not questioned.

Counsel assisting the royal commission, Angus Stewart, SC, said the church had recorded 1006 cases involving individual perpetrators within the organisation since 1950.

However, the church had a strict policy of not reporting allegations of abuse to secular authorities.

Remember, that's 1006 cases that the church's national organization had on record. What about ones that didn't make it beyond the regional level, or ones the victim never reported, or ones that they encouraged the victim not to pursue to a formal complaint? Clearly 1000 cases is just the tiniest tip of this particular iceberg.

Also btw
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_marriage_in_the_United_States
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
... tl;dr = all the marriages we're upset about in Australia would in fact be 100% legal in the USA and occur quite often among all religions.

... and if you look into it. We did allow marriages of girls in Australia as young as 14 with a court's approval, up until reforms in 1991. Which is not that fucking long ago. If there's another culture allowing marriages that we ourselves might have allowed up until 25 years ago, then we have absolutely zero right to demonize them, say they're 'backwards' or 'medieval'. Because we aren't really so far ahead of the curve to make that judgement.

That, and homosexual activity was considered a criminal act as late as 1997, in Tasmania, taking even pressure from the UN and worldwide media to decriminalise it.
