The future president of the Phillipines, Rodrigo Duterte, who will be installed into his office next month, has called out to the civilian population in a national tv broadcast, to shoot drugsdealers. He offers a medal for anyone who kills a drugsdealer. "feel free to call the police, or do it yourself, if you have a gun. You have my support."
He also offers a rich financial award to people who catch druglords and bring them to the authorities dead or alive.
To any police officers involved in illegal activities he promises "you will be killed".

Early may, Duterte won the presidential elections with the promise that he would "end all crime and corruption in the Phillipines within half a year"

Last week he said that corrupt journalist should also get the death penalty.

Human Rights organisations fear that Duterte's presidency will bring a shitheap of human rights violations to the Phillipines.
According to those organisations, Duterte used to be the man behind the 'death squads' who executed over a 1000 people.

...and suddenly expensive house prices don't seem like such a big deal any more. Seriously Phillipines, you just got Trumped.

Quote from: Wikipedia
In early September 2015, an infamous incident was reported of a tourist being forced to swallow his own cigarette butt in a local bar in Davao City after the tourist refused to comply with the public anti-smoking ordinance of the city. Duterte was personally contacted by the bar owner and went into the bar and forced the tourist to swallow his cigarette butt.

Duterte has said that he will close the Congress of the Philippines if it tries to impeach him.... Duterte has said that he plans to pardon himself for mass murder, as well as issue additional pardons to policemen and soldiers accused of abusing human rights.

Both pages are full of comedy gold. Or tragedy gold, I suppose. It's difficult to make light of. Of course, it's just wikipedia, but damn that's an impressively thick "controversies" section.

My boyfriend lives in the Philippines, and it's a worry.
The appeal to those that voted him in is the perception that a brutally direct approach will be effective.
The people there are sick of the blatant corruption going on. Of all the candidates he was the one that seemed to offer a way out of that.
I've gotta say, I can't blame the voters.
Now I'm just praying no one I know gets shot.  :(

Yeah, housing prices need to slowly deflate, not burst, as that'll just be bad for anyone.
Looks to be going that way however.

In other news, anyone else seen that plain packaging YouTube video with the "Australian" accent? I mean, sure, the facts are laughably wrong, but that just pales in comparison to the cringe-worthy Crocodile Dundee wannabe accent.

Damn anti-tobacco labias seem to have carved a good chunk out of their casting budget.

That accent is atrocious. I lost it at "consoomer." Like they weren't even trying.

Yeah... I wish him good luck.  Would offer hugs, but I don't want to inadvertently look like competition.
