I'll accept a knighthood if I get a parcel of land to build my castle on & am allowed to run down peasants on my horse. Seriously the whole thing is so WTF that I'm unsure whether Abbott's lost his marbles or just felt like distracting the press for a while.

What's so WTF about it? It's just an honorary title.

Over here we tend to use the term 'fuckwit' often, but it doesn't really have the same degree of power as 'realitätfremd'...
In other news, even that knighthood thing is actually another backflip.

Judging by the missing article (now) i'd say that that one was a mistake? also considering i've not heard mention of it anywhere else and you'd have thought it'd be big news?

What's so WTF about it? It's just an honorary title.

To be honest I don't really have issue with it, but i'd just be more interested in finding out the process of how people are selected.
Also, I find it funny how by doing this He's upset the republicans, monarchists and his own party all at once. Tis a good effort, that one.

Link doesn't work. Try this.

This is probably the part Max doesn't like:

My intention is that this new award will go to those who have accepted public office rather than sought it; and who can never, by virtue of the office they have held, entirely return to private life.

That, or he forgot Australia is a monarchy.

The link was an article saying that he had called it off. Obviously someone read something back to front when they published it, hence why its taken down now.

Oh you have to be fucking with me.
The article linked was older, from when Abbott first came into office, and he was questioned on the issue. Back then it wasn't a big thing really, so didn't get much attention. Point is that this is in fact a backflip, because he said he wouldn't, and now he is.

Anyway, I'm not hugely opposed, but it does seem like a bit of an insult that we need an honorary title from a very out dated social system for esteemed Australians, because apparently the ones we already had were not good enough.
EDIT: In other news, Indonesia is fucking with us. They aren't happy with the plain packaging cigarette laws, because they work.

Ah i see, I thought it was from yesterday. I wasn't 100% yesterday so i suppose my memory is a bit scrambled.

There are a number of other countries considering plain packaging laws, and are waiting on the results of the various lawsuits launched against the government.

So if these lawsuits can be won (which seems fairly likely) then other countries may follow suit.

Then we can be known for doing something positive!

In other news, yesterday there were student marches to protest cuts to universities in the capital cities. Check out the police response in Melbourne!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Not sure if they wanted to give it the iron fist treatment, or were worried after the March in March thing...

24 hour news cycle bro, I have the ABC feed reports live directly into my brain.
Actually I think for once the Sydney protests were bigger, although a lot less police. They escorted us down the road, but were pretty chill.

Not enough riot shields, they probably expected less from the students :p

How is the relationship between Australia and Indonesia anyways? I've heard it has been deteriorating. Possibly to the point that Indonesians wont be able to get open work visa's in Australia anymore?

It's quite poor at the moment. Indonesia's been sabre rattling, and the alliance is all but in tatters.

Greeaaat. My girlfriend is Indonesian, and Australia was one of the places we wanted to go where both an Indonesian and a Canadian could get a work visa
