But there is the reality that politely asking for things to change rarely gets results. e.g. black people didn't get civil rights in the usa by saying "please, sir".

The idea that people always have to react "appropriately" plays into "don't rock the boat".

For Australia day I plan to wear a shirt with a map of world population density, and under it the phrase "Fuck off, we're full!"

So apparently Indonesia is cranky we had our boats all up in their stuff and are getting their military to watch us.

In all honesty it's just a bit of sabre-rattling for show, and probably to score a few political points with the locals. Still, interesting to consider Australia at war with Indonesia.

Mmm. The article's point about being in range of their airforce is a touch overblown, I think. There are few targets of value in the north end, (unless Indonesia wants to attack civilian populations) and those would be relatively easy to cluster defence on.

That said, it would be nice if it wasn't a thing that even needed to be considered...

EDIT: Huh, 3000km range is a little further than I expected, but it still avoids virtually all major industry in Aus. I guess mining sites may be a viable target though.

The Marx generator will produce Engels-waves which should allow the inherently unstable isotope of Leninium to undergo a rapid Stalinisation in mere trockoseconds.

See it is easy to say it is all just for show, but that in and of itself is a problem. They are going into an election this year, and as such Australia is on their political scope, most notably 'Who will do more to save us from the imposing Australians?' Both parties are going to try and seem bigger and tougher, but then after the election they are expected to act like it. Their showboating is going to damage relations when the public starts to twist their arm more and more.

You can say what you like about Labor, but at least the Swiss were never riled into readying their navy against Australian border violation..

It will be a cold day in hell before we go to war. Firstly Australia sends a decent amount of aid money to Indonesia, and while cutting off this aid would do nothing but escalate relations into a cold war, they know who is feeding them. Secondly, the US is obligated to help us with matters of Asia Pacific strategic defense thanks to the ANZUS treaty, and I'm sure that after getting blue balls over not invading Syria, they must be looking for a fight by now... There will be no open warfare, economic battles are another ball game.

True, though given that Switzerland has no navy, it's not really that impressive.

Actually, Switzerland does have a navy/ military naval component. No seas, but there're lakes.

Yeah, Switzerland's "navy" is a bunch of boats that patrol a lake. They're a division of the army, not a separate branch of military. For reference see the following:

Back on shore: A 40 year old librarian has been charged under Queenslands new bikie laws. They also raided some properties and found some drugs, except that no clear connection between the arrested people and the properties has been given... In related news, to promote the laws, the Queensland government is looking to hire a PR consultant. Their first choice, Joseph Goebbels, is currently unavailable for the task.

If they tie her up and throw her in a pond where she subsequently drowns it'd be safe to assume that she isn't a bikie and can thus be exonerated.
