I think this should be the Oceania politics thread so we can include Papua New Guinea, East Timor, West Papua politics and stuff.

Australasia already officially includes the New Guinea region.

Well, if we tried Oceania then we could fit Indonesia in too. Some fit in the whole of the "Malay archipelago".

This is really just the Australia thread. There's been no meaningful discussion of Asia.

But just because there hasn't been a discussion yet on the rest of Oceania, that doesn't mean it won't happen.

Burma is south-east Asia, not Oceania or Australasia. Unless the geographical spectrum has shifted, it's not part of this thread's topic.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

This seems like a pretty good thing to an outsider like me.
It's a good thing to anyone who isn't insane.

Yeah, it's very pleasing. Immunisation actually has seen fall in rates since AVN came in and started screaming, so when they're disbanded it can go back to the old way of KEEPING YOUR COMMUNITY SAFE FROM INFECTION.

So, as I type this, Australia's prime minister (Julia Gillard) is fighting off a challenge from the previous PM (Kevin Rudd, who she deposed via a similar method). This is, roughly speaking, the third time he's challenged.

However, this time, there is a major shift; Rudd has gained the support of Bill Shorten, commonly considered the major source of Gillard's support up until now. This is because Gillard has basically been toxic waste as far as public opinion goes, while Rudd, who was deposed despite huge public approval at the time, continues to poll strongly (possibly well enough to win the upcoming election).

Interesting times.

I'm not entirely up-to-date regarding Australian politics, but Julia Gillard = Australian Bush, right?

HEEEEERES RUDDY!
Looking like Rudd has the numbers, but unconfirmed. Bryce might actually have an interesting choice ahead of her. She can technically not make Rudd the PM, even if he is the leader of Labor.

And yea, kind of. Gillard is a Prime Minister, not a President. She can be replaced mid-term a lot more easily by her own party, but she is the top law maker.

Yeah, that unconfirmed bit is irritating. According to Fairfax (the link I posted above), a "pro-Gillard source" said Gillard was losing... before Bill flipped his vote; but it doesn't go into any details whatsoever about who or what they are. Not too mention the vote still hasn't actually been counted yet, it's basically just been opinion polling among the MPs so far.

Also, Dutchling... not so much Bush, that would have been John Howard. Rudd was more of a first term Obama when he was elected... but Gillard doesn't really have a direct analogue. She is (possibly still) the head of goverment though.
