Rate of alcohol consumption != rate of alcohol deaths, especially when talking about a situation where the product quality prooooobably fell abruptly at some point.

It's probably a pretty close correlation, far more people die from doing  stupid or violent things while drunk than ever died from low quality contaminated moonshine.
Ask police or emergency room staff what causes all their work during the weekends.

I think the biggest potential for benefit here is a purge of corrupt officials that sanction the drug trade.
I don't think a hard line approach will work long term.
I choose optimism because the alternative is depressing.

This is a guy who joked that he regretted not being in line to rape a missionary who was murdered years ago. It'd be interesting to see what kind of scandal it would take to cost him the Presidency. Extrajudicial killing of purported drug dealers certainly won't be it.

Those actions fit the public persona and agenda he's put forward. Being an improper, rude, an brutal politician is what he was voted in for. The people wanted an unconventional and hard-line leader, as someone apart from the corruption and elitism of the other candidates. I can't see things like these bringing him down.
If something were to though, it would be a corruption allegation of some sort, or something similarly contrary to his persona and mandate.

Being gay, maybe?

Quote from: The middle one
We find that alcohol consumption fell sharply at the beginning of Prohibition, to approximately 30 percent of its pre-Prohibition level. During the next several years, however, alcohol consumption increased sharply, to about 60-70 percent of its pre-Prohibition level. The level of consumption remained virtually the same immediately after Prohibition as during the latter part of Prohibition, although consumption increased to approximately its pre-Prohibition level during the subsequent decade.

Duterte seems to be quite the womaniser, so it certainly would be off from his persona. :P
Interestingly though, the Philippines is very accepting of gay people; they rank a lot higher than the U.S.

Not really surprised about it since we have a popular TV personality that is gay and half the people who works in hair salons and spas are gay.

Gays also openly dress in feminine clothes and act like sisters to other girls. I used to see them constantly with gaggles of girls in college.

Read somewhere that research suggests women like gay friends as they're non threatening, female friends can be competition for mates and male friends are either suitable or unsuitable, either makes them a more loaded choice for companion that a gay man.
Also in other news the sky is blue because air is that particular colour.

Wait, science actually backs it up? I mean sure they look so natural with the gaggle of girls, but really?

Not exactly groundbreaking research, it's mostly a matter of women seeming to "trust" the advice of supposedly gay men more than other sources for dating advice, or other very subjective things like that. The theory as to why that might occur is what I mentioned above. Personally I think women like gay friends because they're men but aren't constntly trying to get into their pants, similar to friend zoned straight friends.

Basically: People find it annoying to deal with people where the attraction only goes one way. Which makes sense, because it makes it much simpler to be friends if there are no romantic feelings in the way.

The Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled today, in the Hague, that China's claim on the largest part of the South Chinese sea is illegal. "There is no legal or historical ground for the claim of rescources in the South Chinese Sea".  Basically, the islands that have been created out of nothing and turned into naval bases now officially belong to the Phillipines.
I wonder if Duterte is insane enough to send troops there to claim them, to kill all Chinese opium addicts.

Shortly before the verdict was passed, China already stated that they do not recognize the international court, and will ignore any verdict.
Chinese diplomats call it "a farce, orchestrated by the US"
