Interesting fact: Children exposed to second hand smoke or children of women who smoke while pregnant are far more likely to develop asthma.

Are they? You got a source for that? Because all the things have seen seems to indicate that second-hand smoke is largely negligible.

Well, WebMD says children of mothers who smoked are 10 times more likely to get asthma.
http://www.webmd.com/asthma/guide/smoking-and-asthma

The below research says 3.6 times, but it's related to "severe asthma" so might not be measuring the same thing as the other one:

Oh yeah, that I can believe. But I was wondering about second-hand smoke, not smoke during pregnancy.

The CDC has a page on second hand smoking; the effects are a little way down.
It lists some nasty effects in infants, and cardiovascular issues in adults, mostly heart attacks.
As someone that enjoys a good bit of passive it bums me out.

The real purpose of the increased tax on cigarettes is not to increase spending on health.

What are you thinking?  We need SUBMARINES!

I never got the devil who popularized the saying that 'kids who smoke are 100% cooler, fact.' They are not, they just look like kids trying too hard

I was scrolling down to the bottom of the page for the jump to: button and saw this thread, clicking on it because, well, Australian politics... how can that not be a riot, right?

First page I get down a couple posts and see someone mention a wizard.
This may be the only politics thread that involves a wizard.
Thank you, ed boy.

I love this man so much. I haven't had a hero since Feynman died, but I do again.

http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2016/05/13/crowdsourcing-democracy-flux-partys-radical-plan-australian-politics

Quote
With an election around the corner, a brand new political party has been born

The Flux Party has no policies, no platform. Instead, members of the public would vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on each bill before parliament via the Flux app, which would instruct the party’s senator how to vote.

The party was founded by tech-savvy Max Kaye and Nathan Spataro, who have experience working in the Bitcoin industry. The 500 members required for AEC registration were recruited, largely through social media, in a matter of weeks

"Flux is quite unique,” Mr Spataro said.

“It begins with a level of direct democracy, where every single person, every single voter, is issued with a vote on any particular issue.

However, participants don’t have to vote on every single piece of legislation. They can save up votes to have greater influence over issues they do care about, or trade them with other users.

They should totally gamify the app btw. Turn politics into Candy Crush for maximum voter engagement.

Interestingly, there are the obvious concerns that a central server for voting can be hacked. So they're not having a central server at all. They're using blockchain technology to act as a full peer-to-peer record of voting intentions. Which seems like a good idea. It's a lot less hackable, more secure and cheaper than having a single huge server you need to maintain.

The bitcoin-based blockchain tech is actually pretty goddamn solid. Even Wall Street is seriously interested in using bitcoin's blockchain technology to replace their share trading platforms:
