So did we, most of this extra info is a result of asking the teacher. Our box is going to be a solid-gold safe, to protect rations, tools & books. We'll just have to poof to the exact spot we'll be staying.
But yep, the south is still swimming in kudzo, & pandas are still gonna die out.

Wait, GOLD?!
Why a solid gold safe?
That's so stupid!

As a note, Gold is heavy, moldable, and really heavy.

Migth as well take an usefull alloy. Oh, and a box made of modular metal tiles you can pry loose. Extra material for tools.

Already considered that. Gold is immune to corrosion, & keeping our shit safe & dry is more important than extra scrap. Plus a solid gold safe is PURE AWESOME.

Having a safe that can be moved is more of an advantage, really. Besides, the gold bends so easily that it will probably fail under it's own weight, and deform rapidly. Which means that it really isn't water proof.

Better use some kind of alloyed metal. There are enough that are strong, corrosion proof and light, as well as easily replaceable.

Edit: Assuming your safe is 6cm thick*, and 1m*1m*1m (Calculates way easier). The density of gold is 19.3grammes/cm3. So your coffin would weight about 70 kg. Provided I haven't miscalculated that is. Which is quite a lot for a box.

*Ie, about the thickness it has to be to be usefull.

Won't make as much of an impression as solid gold. You forget we have to present this. (it's a safe, so we can specify it has steel support inside etc).
Is there an alloyed metal as corrosion-proof as gold?

also I edited the last message I made.

An impression to whom? Weren't you the last 7 people on Earth.
Platina, Zinc, plenty of metals actually. These might not be as shiny, but at least they won't bend. A watertight box with a bad seal is worthless.

edit: As for the staying where you are part, there's plenty of natural disasters that could force you to move. Excessive rains, stuff like that.

Speaking of which, is the cubic yard the outer or the inner limit of your box.

Inner. We don't want to exploit this too much and have it thrown out, so no to starting with a tractor that comes with a closet.
Bah, metals like zinc won't last the ages, and what is this platina of which you speak?
We can move it...once we get horsie friends.

The amount of horses on an island tends to be limited, to say the least.
Platina is a metal that's the rarer than gold, heavier than gold and less reactive than gold.
Oh, and Zinc lasts a long time. Especially if it's some kind of alloy.

Reactivity series, from pure metals

Britain's a pretty big island.
But gold's shinier than platinum- has more oomph factor, is still corrosion-proof and can be supported internally.
By forming a layer of not-zinc-anymore.

Here's a few bits of information/ideas that I can contribute!

1)Solid state memory only wears out when you write to it, not when you read from it. Hypothetically a SSD for a computer will store information for centuries if cared for extremely well and if you only read and never write to it. Combined with a custom-built reader and some backups you could probably be able to access any information on them for 40-75 years (based on the lifetime of a screen) and even then the information wouldn't be lost, just your reader. If you pushed your new civilization in the direction of developing readers quickly then you wouldn't be without any information there for too long. The technology race then only needs to push to developing a new reader for the disks, not the information itself.

2)A simple crank generator will provide power for longer then most people will live, and certainly will provide power for longer then the lifetime of your screen reader. For batteries you would probably want to use a mainspring instead of chemical ones, as it won't go dead in a couple of years and can be replaced with only a low level of technology.

3)If you have 3 females in your groups you could solve all genetic diversity problems with a small human sperm bank. With 2 you may still encounter problems, but only for 1 generation. Sure you get to the whole "using women as baby factories" thing that many people are touchy about, but in the event of mass extinction one of your biggest goals will be to increase your population as quickly as possible. More manpower = faster development, as well as more resistance to disasters/disease. Perhaps your greatest goal is to increase your population as quickly as possible in order to provide the manpower needed to enact your developments and infrastructure requirements.

4)While I don't find any problems with your idea of "love", I would suggest a strong emphasis on the tracking of genealogies and the use of that to determine if someone can be wed. Assuming you start with a maximum diversity through my suggestion above and that each generation manages to produce a tripling (figure 8-10 children with an average of 6 living) it will still be at least 4 generations beyond the original five, your great-great-grandchildren, before the problem of genetic diversity starts to edge off (figuring 6 children survive each pair and the loss of 1-3 pairs for female/male ratio I put my estimate of generation 4, [the founders are gen 0], at around 45 people). Freedom is nice and all, but the facts need to be dealt with first if you want to increase your population quickly without genetic problems. You might also want to consider the idea of Line/Group marriages instead of our idea of a nuclear family, since they would provide a greater population increase while still maintaining stability.

5)Since you are already semi-deifying the materials you are bringing with you, you might want to place an emphasis in your new world on the sharing and development of technology. A religion that was focused around hard work and sharing innovations for the "good of the community" as well as the basic "be nice to other people" facts would greatly help to keep your group focused on developing as quickly as possible.

6)Set your "adult" age low. The sooner people can be considered "adults" the quicker you can go through generations and the faster your population will expand.

7)Bringing metal is good. Until you hit a few generations down the road you won't have the manpower to do much of mining, so any tools you make will need to last quite a while if you don't want to end up using stone ones.

8)Paint will reduce or remove many of your corrosion problems for your safe. If you make it a tradition to keep the dang thing covered in paint then it stops most corrosion problems and that is no longer a consideration. At that point how impressive looking it is isn't a factor, since you will be covering it with paint anyways.

This whole situation reminds me of the book Ender in Exile(cue rage from everyone that only likes the first book) You start off high, but if you dont get the infrastructure you need. You flunk and are reduced to digging for roots. First of all, people are idiots. In the future, maybe you get rational human beings, but assuming that you are young there are gonna be problems. People these days are idiots. Plain and simple. I suggest, if you are simply the last 7 people on earth, then go to a island that has infastructure already ion place. A good amount of it will crumble, but you dont need to preserve everything. Cuba, England, Hawaii, and the Dominican republic are a few I can thing off the top of my head. Hawaii and Cuba would be the best in my opinion.

Nothing built by humans continues to exist in this scenario.
It never existed. We never extracted the resources from the ground, and we never chipped faces into rocks.

1. Is a SSD-reader a low-LOW-tech kind of thing?
2. Did a bit of searching on a sperm bank- needs weekly liquid N2 replacements. even a tiny-sized bank of a dozen or so samples would require a truck worth of nitrogen to keep frozen until use. Keep in mind- we can't be having all three of them pregnant at the same time. !!ISSUES!!
3. We aren't getting married- we're just keeping the ideal alive. Ourselves and our first gen, maybe later, we'll encourage to have many partners but one favored, many for the sole purpose of procreation. Who one can be with will be solely based on blood, with double-blood brothers & sisters being forbidden at first, (shared mother not father), and later half-siblings forbidden, then cousins when we've enough people. We'll be running a 'everyone takes care of everyone's children' kind of thing, so the whole brother-sister relationship we see today won't be recognizable & therefore will be a non-issue. Breeding age is 16.
4.Yep, that's pretty much it, but we don't like the word religion. Culture is better.
5. We'll be using stone wherever we can for that express purpose. We're also bringing samples of copper ores & a few texts dedicated to geology/mining with us- if we find any, we'll be making it.
6. Where would we get the extra paint? But a solid-gold safe housing the knowledge of the reset? That's friggin sweet.

PEOPLE, WHAT SHOULD BE IN THE BILL OF RIGHTS?! Think fast.
I reckon you don't need a formalized bill of rights. Maybe something informal, but that can just be handled via social norms.
