You're starting a new society!
« on: March 23, 2013, 12:11:42 pm »

This is homework.

So, my group and I have been tasked with starting a new society with the following prompt:

Your group must pick an island to land on. All traces of society have been erased, resources that have been spent are back in the earth, any animals/plants that are currently on the island are there now. You get to bring a box, the material of which is your choosing, which holds roughly 1 cubic yard. You can put anything into the box.

Pertinent info:
We've split up different parts of the assignment to be covered in each of our essays/presentations. My semi-assigned part is government. Semi-assigned because no one in the group (aside from me) has a clue about what should be put in here.
I'm here to ask for help and novel ideas- anything/everything, criticize away.
Here's my blueprint:

Government

Laws

Punishment

Enforcement

But yep, was having issues pulling up discussions/papers on this kind of hypothetical situation, and my group's about as helpful as a bag of wet tissue paper. I can provide extraneous info if you request it, (we've picked britain as the island, we've 5 members, 2m3f, aren't a religious group, box is packed full of books/tools etc).
Give me your knowledge!

5 people isn't enough to provide a genetically stable society. Pretty sure you'd all die after a few generations.

Superstition and myth. We'd only have issues if we keep on breeding half-siblings for generations. If we diversify we'll be fine.
Fun fact: At some point in the past the total population of humans narrowed to about 5k individuals world-wide.

IIRC, the absolute minimum for a genetically stable pop was 16.

And even then you need to be lucky. Ie, no nefast mutations or genetic problems in the original group, nor the earlier generations.

Well, for the sake of getting a decent grade we'll assume we have really really hardy genes and conveniently high rates of mutation. Gov?

Looked that funfact up, here's what I found:

Looked it up, apparantly it's more of a 'roll the dice' kind of survival chance- either we get the horrible mutations or we don't, so ~50/50 chance.

ARGH

I personally think that small societies of five people won't need government at all. On the other hand, that probably won't help your assignment.

Easy, put a machine that can do anything in the box. One of the things the machine can do is fit in the box.

I trust your familiar with lord of the flies. I can't wait to see what the griefer's will try  :). Depending on your year, i would address laws and such like realistically. I'd also eye the box with a view to last, since you lucky buggers are not going to be raising children in your paradise. As i see it, bugger trying to live in primordial Eden and remember how to grow apples. Then there's the question of inbreeding. Either don't bother going for long term survival, or I'd fill that box with sufficient samples from a sperm bank. "Western idea's" about love and inbreeding will very quickly have you replaced, at least as soon as someone has a troubled birth.

As for the military listening to you, that will consist of a very, very tight hold, eventually. Bear in mind that everyone will be the military, including you. Compulsory knowledge of gun schematics would be worth the trouble, if only so you don't revert to a feudalistic mess, once you have the numbers.

The Council has little reason not to be everyone, frankly. Your idea's should bubble to the top if they're as good as you think, your small population shouldn't waste too much time and everyone will understand what you're doing and why. I wouldn't dismiss the populace, considering the inevitable specialization. The same goes for the courts, as de facto punishments will be very much in play.

Also, are resources returned to where they were? If so, bring a few ancient maps.

If i were to take this utterly realistically, though, I'd probably say leave the earth something to remember us by. There are still elephants, dolphins and apes, and who knows what next. Make it a little easier and a little quicker for them.

Holy snap, good idea Novel, (nice namesake too). Spermbank indeed. That's been passed along with credits good chap.
Inbreeding's going out the window, but love doesn't have to- up to our group how we structure it.

We'll have to revert to a feudalistic mess- don't want to waste the box space on guns, so the most we can hope for is jumpstarting the civ into the iron age or something.

Point taken about forgoing a formal gov at first, but by the time we're 70 we might be looking at a population of 50 or more. In such a low-tech society, we don't even need specialization. Not yet.

Yes, resources are back in the ground, but the continents haven't shifted or anything.

I think writing sharing into your laws could open a can of worms.

Ah, it's times like these where one would want fundamental human rights. Bring an encyclopedia, no need to start from total scratch. What is the justification for your council ruling? What should happen should simply one take power? 3 council members die? So on e.t.c.

-one must work or learn to eat
-one must try to share, be kind and understanding to fellow people

I have a big question mark on these two. How do you monitor these laws? How do you judge what is enough work/learning to feed a person? Is dragging logs from dawn to dusk equal to fishing? Is extra work encouraged in any way, or are rewards the same for all amounts of work?

If the last bit is a law, is it enforced in any way? What happens to a person who is not sharing, being kind and/or understanding to his fellow people? And how do you make the call what is considered kind/understanding?
