Interest check: M-COM (medieval xcom 'cept monsters)
« on: March 21, 2013, 08:20:38 pm »

Hi. Loong time lurker and idea brewer, decided to take a chance at doing an ISG ( be gentle).  My initial premise is in the title, a very low fantasy version of xcom, except replacing the XENOS with things that go bump in the night.

My initial plan is to start small ( controlling very few characters  ) before expanding out into full on xcom-iness

Also would you be partial to random genned characters for max !FUN! ?
So yeah that's my wimpy opening. Hopefully I can drum up some interest

What format would you be doing it in? I assume it'd have to have graphics, or it wouldn't be very XCOMmy.

Sadly no graphics, I am no artist, so it will be in text based updates

Sounds cool! :3

Because trying to stuff Fate/Whatever's engrish and the title of a 17th century book on statecraft into Pokemon syntax tends to make the content incomprehensible.

Well, I guess it would blend right in with the rest of the games here...

If you'd like to put a little more effort into it, though, might I recommend at least using an ASCII art tool, for that Dwarf Fortess feel?

It depends, is this a suggestion game?  Because I already have a character an x-com like game.  I will be watching though.

Like X@COM? It's an ascii-based X-com.

OP, check it out, you could probably use something like what they do.

Also, heads up, an X-COM-like game would probably be a lot of work. From my own experience I can tell you that running a strategy, turn-based game with any kind of real game mechanics is a hellish nightmare of a timesink.

Alright So I have some interest. To be clear, just the premise is similar to X-COM, I could of said MiB with monsters and low fantasy, but I just like X-COM that much more, It will be more rpg-ish, without a whole lot of upfront number crunching

This immediatly made me think of good old warhammer 40k. One primarch (I think it's the dark angel one, Lion el'Johnson) has crash landed as a baby on a monster-infested, medieval-tech level planet, grew up, joined an organisation of monster-killing crusaders and cleansed everything with sword and lance.
I am interested.

I can vouch for that.  Even one without mechanics is hard to do.
