S: As a whole - impressive. I'd never have thought Amling could get this lot through with the politicians. We're activating only these six right now. Best not to risk the project with people like Red-Eye while we're still waiting for final approval. As soon as the Alliance finishes bugging our ship, we'll bring them to Kronos. -General

HEROES OF MANKIND
PROLOGUE

Shiftspace flees in jerks and stutters as the frigate Ariq begins transition to realspace. Fragments of unborn and lost realities flicker around her hull and fall behind, appearing to, for a moment, fill the void behind her with the raw energy of creation. Then it is gone, and a mosaic of glittering stars takes its place.

The frigate holds in place for several minutes, shaking off the last burdens of Shiftspace travel and begins to power up. Inside her complex superstructure, these gigantic, transdimensional engines begin to shut down, and the ship's FTL drive roars into life. Within moments, the Ariq is thundering across this lonely, dead universe. The crew and new passengers inside feel only a low hum through the deck despite the frightening speed. The frigate's destination is on the other side of this sector of the galaxy, one of the few constructions in this dead world manned by living beings, and, more importantly, humans. Kronos Station, an old observation outpost – when the original discoverers of this universe, the Autarchy, still thought some life might be found – converted into a top secret research facility and ship yard of Project Torchbearer. And within... the first true joint project of the Alliance, the product of years of research and development.

The frigate's command bridge is silent when the passengers arrive, some of them still sore from cryo. A skeleton crew of the General's hand-picked men and women man the stations, watching the incoming data with obvious anxiety. The man himself paces back and forth on the captain's platform, giving terse orders when needed. He gives a simple nod at their arrival, eyeing them darkly.

'We're about to clear FTL,' General Septimus says. 'There'll be a lot of people who think they're important to the Alliance here, so don't make a mess of it. Behave yourselves, and we'll get you to your ship and out there to finally do some good.'

There's a weariness to his voice. His eyes are red from too little sleep and too many chemicals pumped into his brain by the crude augments sticking out of his skull like a spider's web. The General's skin is sickly and pale, though probably more because of the radiation exposure of his past than anything. Apparently, the General was chosen to head the project both because of his exceptional military skill – having united a post-apocalyptic hellhole and resisted the vanguard invasion long beyond even the most optimistic estimates – and his independent background, so not to favor any of the Big Five, the greatest powers of the Alliance.

The passengers, the Heroes of the Project, have spent the last few months in demanding testing and training. The psychics have been trained to spot out Turned – the Abomination's unwitting thralls – from even the most subtle infection, and all of you have been run through endless combat sims and physical and mental practice, as well as thorough lessons in the more theoretical side of things. To men and women of their skill, it has been child's play. Now, finally, their mission is about to begin, with the most experimental starship in Alliance space granted to the Project's command in a ceremony presided over by representatives from all of the Big Five and many lesser powers who have contributed.

General Septimus turns from his guests when the hum of the engines begins to die down. Slowly, stars begin to fill the viewscreens, soon replaced by a flood of image and sensor data. New information appears too quickly for anyone to make any sense of the old except for the General and his crew. He betrays no emotion, leaning in to request whatever bit of data.

'Abnormal readings from Kronos, General,' one of the crew says. A large image of the space station fills the screen a moment later. The feed magnifies and zooms in until only the station can be seen, lit by a distant sun far behind.

The feed shows little – a small armada of ships can be seen surrounding the station, myriad different silhouettes from myriad different strains of humanity.

'Sir – we've got ship wreckage around the station. Signs of battle damage. Most of the ships appear to have no functioning systems, General. Kronos Station has also suffered superficial damage.'

The General simply nods, though one of his cranial implants lights up, trickling focusing stimulants into his bloodstream. 'How wonderful,' he says. 'Any signs of life?'

There's a moment of silence as the crew processes information. 'Wait... yes, we're picking up two emergency beacons coming from the station itself. Also, we've picked up active thermal emissions – ziyaki ships, sir. Looks like a cruiser and transports. Shall we hail them? They are our allies, sir, and may be the only survivors.'

'Right... wouldn't that be just too convenient. Keep it silent for now and take us in, as quiet as you can.'

As the frigate begins to move again, the General turns to the ignored Heroes. He chuckles grimly and begins to fidget with a cigarette.

'Well, it looks like you might see action sooner than we thought. I'm not discounting some sort of freak accident just yet, but I doubt it. We're gonna take the ship closer for a better look at the situation. If you want to put your genius brains into use, give me whatever pops into your mind.'

Several of the operating stations below are free for anyone who knows what they're doing to hook into and look at the incoming data from.

The silver pyramid that serves as the head of the Aro, Za-Shaddalac turns about, taking in the shapes of the bridge, her companions, the general... particularly the outlines of their minds. Interesting. Some seem to have the capacity as well. Strange tendrils twisting about, some restrained, some not quite as much.

But that is something to discover later. At the moment, there are matters of greater urgency. She reaches out to the mind of General Septimus, lacking any other means of simple communication.

~Temporary Overseer Septimus, this is the Aro, Za-Shaddalac, Temporary Servant. This ship is large and very visible. I may use Mir-Farilil to close in less conspicuously, then gauge any threats and obtain superficial information using my operational capabilities, then withdraw rapidly and return before discovery. I should be able to discover superficial information this way and relay it to you. Ending psychic communication.~

Communicate.

Valoth gripped the handle of his sword uneasily. He glanced around at the others, coughed, and spoke:

'They here ... for ... we. They no here for ... other ... thing. Sorry for bad speak. I still learn ... gah!"

He ceased trying to talk and instead pushed his mind out beyond the borders of his skull, flickering over the myriad minds of those gathered here. Suppressed rage, curiosity, apprehension he felt. But he was not interested in the others, for now. He needed to get his intent across.
He entered the General's mind and spoke not with words that he did not yet know, but instead with feeling and intent, which can be approximated as this:
~They will only be here for us. They have no other reason; they may have betayed your Alliance and seek to capture us to deliver us to the Blight.~
He glanced over at the silver one.
~This one speaks clearly. It would be prudent to know what exactly has happened, but if no survivors are found, we should destroy them. If this ship lacks the capacity, we must capture the vessel you have prepared for us. Those are our options as I see it.~
Valoth passively observes the minds of the crew manning the sensors, focusing on one if something important comes up.
Oh, and of course communicate.

Frigate Command Bridge

Valoth: [4] - The crew's minds are a mixture of worry and the blade's edge feel of determination. Memories of old actions flash through minds, joined by fearful future images of what they expect from the station. Valoth catches glimpses of Coupe, the scientist lady who seemed all too eager to poke needles into him, dead, along with other Project staff. A tantalizing image he suspects to be their 'starship' flashes past, manned by towering aliens.

Valoth can make little sense of the more concrete data on their minds, but gets the feeling it only adds to the crew's anxiety.

Both:

The General looks taken aback by the mental assault. The psychics can sense emergency guards rising up to protect his thoughts, an obvious sign of mental conditioning. He relaxes and adopts a neutral tone before answering Za-Shaddalac;

'Right... you can do that. Don't usually have much staff eager to head into the void alone. If you think you can pull it off, your, uhh, Mir-Farilil is in the cargo hold. Keep me posted.'

He considers Valoth's words for a moment. 'Our first priority is to obtain the ship and see if any of our staff survived. If the ziyaki have been Turned and attack us, well... neither of these ships can take on that cruiser in a fair fight. We'd need to make it not fair somehow - but I suspect by the time Alliance reinforcements arrive, they'll be long gone.'

~I understand, Temporary Overseer. I shall find the Arnam and take him outside.~

The Aro, Za-Shaddalac then heads down into the cargo bay to find the Arnam, Mir-Farilil.

Go to the cargo hold and find the Arnam, Mir-Farilil. Make sure to note any interesting features of the ship on the way as well as the particulars of the cargo bay.

Lara gave her partner a certain look. A look that said, not in so many words...

This doesn't feel good. I'm ready, though...I'm with you.

She walked over to analyze the information, her hand lingering fondly on Desmonds right shoulder for the barest second-enough contact for a lifetime of memory, in truth. They took their moments when they could get them.

"Can you help me with the data, Cipher 20? May not know much about interstellar travel...but three dimensional warfare, I have studied."

That was quite true-it was not rare for airships to battle one another over the seas of their broken world, and the tactics and movements were not unlike vessels floating in space. Albeit, on a larger scale and they didn't fall when destroyed. She has grasped these lessons during her own training fairly quickly.

Action: Try to analyze from the way the destroyed ships are positioned and placement of damage on them, how the battle might have gone-where the fire might have come from, for example.

While doing so, she idly commented to whoever was listening.

"...So, a Dragon Knight, a sword wielding Dogman, A Psychic God, A Power armored Commando, and a sneaky Witch walk into a bar...two Cipher Agents are already there, but you don't see them. What do they order?"-the universal joke, it seemed. Everyone knew that one.

Her eyes could still dance with amusement, and they did now.

In contrast, Valoth's brow crinkled at this. He stared at 19 with a disgruntled expression, and after a while he ventured, "What is bar?" He scratched the back of his head, confused.

Cipher 19 narrowed her eyes, smirking. A clueless one, then-unless It was bluffing. She filed the information away-as she was sure her partner had.

"It's a long slab of usually metal, stone or wood placed in the center of a room with high seats, for many people to drink and eat at once-a social gathering, for people to talk and carouse...or not to talk, just to be alone...depending on the venue." She responded in an even voice.

Valoth frowned at this, not quite grasping the words, but a flicker of thought was enough to determine the intent behind them.  His face brightened. "Ah, a ... meeting-place?" he queried. He did not like the look of amusement - perhaps even condescension? - on that one's face, but from what the Alliance personnel had told him, not everyone here could talk mind-to-mind, and it would be best for him to only resort to it in the case of not being able to communicate at all.
"Food. They ... order ... food. It is what people do at ... bars, no?"

19 had gone back to the console.

"You're getting it now."

And it's fairly impolite to pry, you know. She thought-or Desmond thought. It was difficult to say, but even Valoth would have felt the mental resiliency around them both increase-strong enough to shut him out and make it a struggle, if they wished.

For-In Laras own society, where even minimal telepathy was the rule and not the exception, it wasn't hard to tell when you were being 'progged', or mind read-in fact, it was considered quite rude to do so without express permission-like groping a stranger, it was apt to get you punched in the face or taken to jail.

This, did Valoth get the mental image of a slamming door.

Valoth shrugged as the Cipher closed her mind. "Strange speech," he commented as he returned his gaxe to the wreckage ahead. He was rather used to having people close their minds to his probes; it had happened quite a lot since he had volunteered for the project. While it was strange to him, as he lived in a society where almost all of the communication was mind-to-mind and thus closing your thoughts off was a sign of having something suspicious to hide, he supposed that the people here possessed many secrets. No matter; he had no intention of prying.

"Is hrar, I ... think. Luck? Is the word ... fate. Yes. Is fate, I think. That this - he gestured to the remains of the battle - happen now. Is good start, no?", he chuckled with a halfhearted grin on his face.
