If the greaves/poleyns/cuisses/tassets can be cut off with a sword, do that first- otherwise find a knife,(shouldn't be hard, mainhanders would be small enough). Can we break our sword to get a cutting edge small enough?
Not with your knight's sword. A normal sword would work. I suppose you could try breaking your sword, but the reason its too difficult to cut the straps is because your sword is quite long. Imagine holding a yardstick at one end, and then trying to poke yourself in the shoulder with the other without letting go. If you broke it, then it would be much too wide to fit between the plates. Also its not a good idea to break your only sword.

Ah, well, if it worked and saved a few seconds, we'd be saving men's lives. Good to know- even if we could break it, and break it into a short enough piece, even then an inconvenient width makes it unfeasible.

Stab the ground, drop the shield, search maximum-focus for a sword.

Anyway. We should probably get to the lancer, pick up the weapon. Use our kite shield to defend ourselves as best we can(deflecting projectiles is better than blocking them), while we try and get around him, while we call for our allies to help flank him.
+1  Get the lancer and try and use it on the mech.  Try and get behind it and hit it from there.

Could we throw it like a javelin? Or the other things, the Lancets as grenades?

 :-\
I hope deflection works- it's the only option we have. I have my doubts, and god help us if it detonates.

Hey howabout a different tack:

No matter what we would end up winning by exploiting a weakness of the mech.  One way we exploit it through speed, another we exploit it through deflecting projectiles and the last as you said is just luck.

I don't think deflecting a direct hit would work, I just don't think taking off all our armor sounds safe considering all the shrapnel and other dangerous stuff flying around.  At least this way we have some protection so if we get hit we might just get injured instead of dead.

I also don't even really like the idea of fighting this thing.  I could care less about being a hero or showing off or anything like that.  The only reason I am not flat out suggesting we retreat is because I feel bad about ditching our squire and we don't know where she is.

Shrapnel wouldn't be much of a worry unless we're really close to where the guy's shooting. And besides, getting injured just makes us more heroic!
Unless the guy's using shrapnel rounds...our troops really got gibbed, didn't they?
If he's using HE stuff, a direct hit is death, but if it's shrapnel, we might be able to ignore it even if it detonates on our shield. I just really don't want to see it come to that.

Hmm...shit. we're in the middle of a field, but not quite. We're actually to one side, and the Maton's in the middle. Facing us.

@gunin: How far off of the mech's centerline are we? 20 degrees, 50 degrees, or dead-center-front?

I get the distinct impression you're being snotty. I say use the shield for one reason.

I'm fairly certain we're about to die. I don't really expect it to work, but it's all we have, since while we're in the process of taking off our armor, it's probably going to kill us. This way, while it may not work, our shield may be broken, or we could survive it barely(us being able to deflect the shells once, doesn't mean we're invincible to it. It means we were lucky, and our arm/shield will probably be pretty banged up. But what else can we do, since from the sounds of it, we're the closest guy? You see a knight starting to take off his armor and he's the closest one to you, you probably think to yourself; oh look a target.

He is.

And blocking a howitzer shell? With a kite shield? Its field gun status, as in it punches through small tanks. Which is the point, since having mobile artillery, no matter how light, is a massive boon to any commander. Hell, his autorifles (machine-guns) aren't even half as big and they would shred you like cabbage, like I said earlier. You're just not going to survive a direct hit, it would go straight through you before it even exploded, and even if it somehow didn't and your body also didn't turn to jelly inside the armour, it'd still pound you a couple feet into the ground first from the sheer force of the blast.

Yup, they're shrapnel shells, which is why everyone got cut to pieces on that first volley.

The Maton's torso is facing a few degrees up and to the left after shelling the fleeing foot soldiers. His arm is mounted on the left side, which is important to know. Your troop concentration is also slightly denser to your right than to your left, as a result of the foolish charge earlier on, so he'll probably buy you a few seconds by attacking them first.

Well then I guess we should drop the shield, as apparently it's useless, and begin jogging idly towards it.

 :(
I thought I might be walking that line. The thought of trying to deflect the shells started to look grim, and having the majority going for it was distressing.
I've also kind of had it in for that armor.

That said, with shrapnel rounds it might be rather valuable. Grab the lance and cut the guy's lancet belt off?

Should we go to our left and hope we aren't noticed flanking him? Or go for a risky gambit and run ahead & to our right, hoping to get underfoot and on his blind side sooner?

Perhaps we can use a lancet to provide a distraction? Smoke screens would be good, but we lack the components.

Lancets are like grenades in that they must be primed before they can be used or attached to a lance, and yep, they explode on contact. It would definitely make a pretty big boom, as they're for busting tanks and knights, but how you try to use that is entirely up to you.

I'm thinking throwing one next to the thing, but I'm fishing for input & more ideas.

Sure, throwing it while there is still some distance between us is probably a good idea considering that we can't really run away from the blast.

I don't know how dangerous the blast would be if our front was facing it, as long as we weren't in the direct path. I think we should try to jog around to it's side, to throw it in. If it begins to turn towards us, throw it so it lands behind, as best we can.
