Just applied if anyone is on to accept! Dunno what crafting skill I'm going for, is there anything inparticular we need? If there isn't I'll probably go for cook or tailor.

EDIT: Oops, I accidentally picked herbalist. Oh well.

We don't need anything in particular but I'm already a herbalist. We also have a tailor and a poison maker in. I'll probably be able to get on in around an hour and a half to accept applications. It would be helpful to get a blacksmith, craftsman, and a chef so we would have a full compliment. I can probably provide some things that'll get you established. If anyone needs me, just say something in the guild chat when I'm online. Remember that we both need to be online for an application to be accepted, though.

If there's a way to undo the selection I made I'd be happy to do it, as I thought it was a gathering skill.  :P

You can, actually. Hit the "My Life" button and open Herbalism. There should be a button that says "abandon profession". Click it and you can join your new profession.

Okay, I'll grab chef asap then! Thanks.

EDIT: I'm on as a side note, so you can accept the application whenever.

Taels I can't answer (I think one source is kidnapping? But maybe not for non VIPs.), but if you've joined the guild I've taken the chef profession and would be happy to hand out food if you're on when I am!

You can get unbound liang (taels) from kidnapping and from trading. There may be a few more sources I can't remember. You can get steamed buns from the 15 minute daily reward. You'll also get a good amount from your main storyline quest.

...umm, wow. Ok, I'm playing this. It's...both good and bad. Can't say I really recommend it based on what I've seen so far, but if you can deal with the wonkiness, the translations that good are not entirely and an interface that feels unfinished and that really likes to stack things on top of each other, I will say that this does appear to be more than just another WoW clone.

Undetermined if the game is reasonably playable without paying. There are bunch of free-play penalties that so far seem surmountable, but I recall reading that there was a daily play limit for free accounts, and given that 1) xp is awarded over time 2) players can kidnap you and sell you into slavery when you're offline 3) you don't get xp when kidnapped 4) you also receive a 5 hour debuff on next login if you're kidnapped that apparently prevents you from gaining xp unless you pay to have it removed...that might be a complete deal breaker. Anyway, still unconfirmed. The available documentation seems incomplete so far.

Which is important for any Free to Play game to find out... I am curious too.

It has killed my love for some of the only MMOs I actually liked.

The guild is up! Both of the name suggestions were too long so I just went with DrunkenBeard. Post your character names in here so I can add you to the guild.

I'm ZhaoJia. I don't see DrunkenBeard in the guild list. Pretty sure I did choose the Blue Dragon server as stated earlier.

EDIT: Huh. Ok, I just discovered the team-DDR mini game.

EDIT again: I so don't understand this game.

Ok, guys...I'm going to have to upgrade my recommendation to "yes, play this." The free player limitations appear to be within reason, and there's some (unique? unusual? different?) aspects of gameplay right alongside the standard MMO-fare.

Just...be prepared to feel confused a lot. There are some fairly complicate systems and they're badly translated. And every now and then you'll be playing along for an hour or two, feeling pretty good about how you have a handle on gameplay and then WHAM now you get to learn about...food battles. Or spy missions. Or other crazy stuff.

I've been playing for like 5 hours now, and I think I've done only two "go kill foo and return to me" quests in that time. A lot of courier quests, to be sure...but overall I feel pretty safe in saying this is not a generic WoW clone.

That said, it does appear to have something of a "daily tasks" gameplay model, with capped "skill" gains. So for example, if you want to increase your mining skill, you can log in and mine for five minutes and you're capped. You can keep mining after that but you'll only get ore, no new skill gains until the following day. Similarly there appears to be a a limit to the number of "experience points" you can gain per day. (The system is more complicated than you might guess.) If you want min/max, you'd log on and reach the various caps for each different type of activity that awards xp: crafts, gathering, faction challenges, duels, etc. There is no grinding mobs for xp.

You're partially right. You don't get xp over time, but from doing things. Spying, patrolling, cart runnjng, school wars, arenas, crafting, and even jumping and exploring, among other things, all give xp. You do get xp from offline jobs also, and you're right about the gaining of xp from offline jobs ending if you're kidnapped. However, the ransom you have to pay is pretty small. I've only been kidnapped once and the ransom was like 600 wen. Getting experience is really nothing to worry about. Once you reach 5th internal, you can do everything except forbidden instances. Since you've made another post, I can tell you that quests aren't very good at all. Supposedly, they are if you max out relations with the NPC that gives you them, but that takes a while. The quests that they give you have pretty bad rewards. Unless you're doing story quests, as the story quests have good rewards and are also pretty interesting. They are a bit hard to follow though. Also, I'll try to invite to the guild.

I have to say LordBucket, your first post on the matter probably expressed exactly how I felt about the game when I first started up. It's clearly different, but it's also very confusing for a lack of good translation and GUI.

Ok, time for a couple new-player gameplay tips. Everyone feel free to post your own.

 * The game really is good. You just have to wrestle with the interface until you get to the good parts. You play Dwarf Fortress. Stick it out.

 * Activate three of your meridians. These are basically free buffs that you can turn on at any time. But you do have to turn them on. Don't know what any of the stats do? That's fine. Guess. You can always change your mind later. While you're at it, pick one to train too. The meridian interface button is the > beneath your character avatar in the upper left.

 * Related, there are a lot of options and abilities and things you can look at and do that are similarly hidden by the interface. Take the time to look around. Some of them, like "My battlefield" appear to not be implemented yet. Others, like the prayer and gift interface, allows you to give and receive various buffs and items to other players. If you've been friended by anyone it's possible you might even have buffs in the queue waiting for you to activate them. Take the time to explore the interface options. Sometimes even tiny little buttons or graphics that look purely cosmetic do fairly important things.

 * Be aware that very often names are translated differently in different game windows. For example, you might have a quest in your log to go talk to Don Jiao, but when you get there the name floating over is head is Don Zhao. I suspect that are not typos, but rather inconsistencies in the translation convention. Similarly, there are several different game names for currency, some of which the same and some of which are not. "Silver" "silver coins" "liang" "bound silver" "unbound silver" and "taels" are six different names for two different types of currency. A skillbook with a name like "Ferocious Tiger Bounds Happily Over the Mountain" might teach you a skill that appears as "Tigers Climbs over Mountain" in your skill list. Vigor is sometimes called energy, even though there is an energy stat. And in some cases, (silver especially) these differences are important. Caution is advised.

 * When money permits, take up all gathering skills.

 * Take cooking. Even if you won't be keeping it, it's convenient to have to be able to make food to avoid starvation and to give yourself weapon buffs. You could take farming+cooking in your first twenty minutes of play pretty easily, and the combination will not only keep you fed and buffed, it will generate a slight net positive money gain. You can always drop cooking later if you want something else.

 * Whenever you accept or complete a quest, talk to the npc again after ending dialogue. It happens fairly often that quests involve doing nothing but talking to the person who just gave you the quest and listening to them ramble some more. Other times there will be new quests available. As in...you talk to Bob and he gives you quest X, and quest X is the only quest he shows as available. Then immediately talk to him gain and he gives you quest Y, and quest Y is the only quest he shows as available. Then you immediately talk to him again and he gives you quest Z. As if you were kind of expected to complete each quest and return to him to get the next one, but you don't have to complete each quest first.

 * It's possible to to choose a school long before you're prompted to do so by the storyline quest. Personally, I had level 7 of my school internal skill before I got around to finishing chapter 1 of the storyline quest chain. Getting your school internal skill early will not only make your life easier because you'll be a lot stronger, more importantly you'll be training something that will remain useful for a long time, unlike the default "Self Recollection" skill which becomes obsolete.

 * When you do spy missions, contrary to what the help text might imply, the "Leave" button means "cancel the mission and give up all progress, ha ha ha you stupid englishe speaker" and not "I've spent 20 minutes doing this and I'm finished and ready to turn it in now please."
