The fantastic DoomRL got a new upgrade

DoomRL is a magnificent adaptation of the ever famous Doom into the Rogue-like genre.
Fast play, furious battles , tons of unlocks, lots of stats, and amazing tile and mouse support.

This release is dedicated to NEW content. There are several new special levels paired with the old ones for greater randomness! Visit the Military Base, find Mt. Erebus or feel the dread of Limbo. Along with new special levels, there are new level generators and enhancements to the old ones.

For the pro-players, we have brand-new Dual-Angel and Archangel challenges (with a corresponding hidden Badge level), and Custom challenges for everyone. Be sure to also check out Gunrunner, the new Scout master trait!

And if that isn’t enough, we’ll give you more content soon, this time easier than ever, for DoomRL comes equipped with a connection to the ChaosForge ModServer! Expect new mods, new challenge maps (for which you can gain badges!) to appear on a regular basis!

As it was before, the game is available in High quality and Low quality version, the High Quality version feature a higher quality soundtrack.

The game is completely free, but you can make a donation to the developer on his website.

Wow, i really need to re-acquire my past DoomRL habits, got killed way too early multiple time after not playing for so long :D

I don't suppose LoS shenanigans are any less important now? That's what's been keeping me from getting good at DoomRL, mostly because I am just horrible at shooting behind corners and the like :(

Good to see it's still active, though - coffee break RLs like this are definitely a thing I really enjoy.

On the new special levels in this version ("hey not too rough" difficulty), i went into 2 of them :

I noticed the lost souls behave differently now, more wandering around instead of attacking immediately (more similar to how they are in the actual FPS), it's very good as now in Phobos Anomaly you can enable running and manage to get back into the start room before being forced to waste medic kits if you've not found some big guns

I only started playing DoomRL fairly recently but it's great to see an update.  I can't imagine what kind of player would be thinking "You know, I really need HARDER CHALLENGES" though.

If you have not disabled "NetworkConnection" in the config.lua file, be sure to go to :
Custom Games -> Download Mods
There are currently 4 mods you can download for the custom games
Hell Arena (that is basically the Hell Arena of the main campaign)
Dead Simple (a reproduction of Dead Simple from Doom2, very hard as you need to find your weapons while Mancubi are around, then Archnotron will come.. and remember that DoomRL monsters are way more dangerous and powerfull than the FPS versions, dodging a Mancubi rockets in Doom2 is not hard, but in DoomRL ... good luck without dodgemaster trait :D )
Classic Mode (the game campaign shortened to 10 levels, the Cyberdemon as the boss, no traits)
Skulltag Arena (very fun Arena rework, progressive rise in difficulty between rounds, skulltags runes may start to appear etc...)

I have been playing the Angel of Shotgunnery challenge a bunch of times lately and found the Focused double shotgun to be a really great weapon combined with Shottyman (that i always try to build first).

In Angel of Shotgunnery when you win the Arena special level, instead of an useless rocket launcher (can't use anything that is not shotgun in this challenge), the game gives you a double shotgun, then you only need a Wizkid level and once you run into

You can obtain this very good upgrade to the double shotgun (more damage, and an alternate fire allowing to shoot only 1 shell, though 1 shell does much less damage) and has a lower spread than the double shotgun, meaning it has a better range before damage reduction (the bad point of the double shotgun is then nullified).

Excellent weapon, the only problem is that shells become rarer and rarer during the game progression (the shells on the ground are only 8 ammo, the only good source is looting the former sergeants for 30 ammo, but unlike in the first half of the game, in the last par, those formers are -very- rare).
And to get the full damage you're going to spend 2 ammos by shots, it can get very fast out of hand for your stock, especially if you have not gone to some Intuition path and then shoot blind around corner to detect monsters.

So if you're going Angel of Shotgunnery and don't find artifacts shotguns, be sure to give a try to assembling the Focused double shotgun, when you're having Shottyman it's a real blast :D
And if you're a Marine class, withArmy of the Dead it must be really great (shrapnel damage of every shotgun become armor piercing)


Now since the while i am playing 0.997 (and it's a lot) i have not found once a single Nano, Firestorm and Onix , i wonder if the dev made them even more rare, as i have run a lot of character to near endgame in 0.997
I have found a few artifacts but not once a single shotgun ones too.

Double Shotgun always has the 1-shell alt fire. 99% certain of it.

It does.

I have been finding that pistol builds work really well - With a fast Dualgunner, you can be doing 6d4+18 damage per second, at range, by level 4, just with the base pistols.

where do you get the 6d4+18 ?

a pistol does 2d4
son of a gun gives +1 by level (max 3) , so shouldn't the max once dualgunning be 4d4+6 ?
