They'll just get in the way. It'll be a hassle to arm them and they're just as likely to attack us as the enemy, not to mention they won't be of much use in combat anyhow, even as a distraction. Its a bad idea, trust me.

They don't have to be much help. They're just to supplement our forces, particularly make sure the compound stays in our hands, while we do the real tasks of killing tough concentrations of resistance and hunting the merchant leaders.

It varied throughout the times and depending on where you got them from. ANYWAYS.

Lets not piss off our employer and have him weasel out of giving us our bonus. Regardless of how much they are worth they're still 'valuables', and we're not to loot. They're useless to us as troops if we take them on as men anyhow. If I was a slave I'd split the second we hit a port. I'd want to go home, not join a band of mercenaries and have to risk my bloody life, even if it is better than forced labour. I'd want to go home. Its no money out of our pocket to hire men for the band anyhow, and its not like we're undermanned, so can we just let this thing go?

Once you've been released from slavery you're going to bloody leave and try to find a way home, not be forced to fight.

Not to mention getting them killed having them fight the compound guards is the same as letting them run. Letting them out is going to lose us money, using them as a distraction may get them killed and lose us money, and taking them on as men is pointless AND WILL LOSE US THE MONEY.

At the very least the bonus or a small sum and at worst the entire pot. I'm not saying it may not be a tactically viable option, but in this situation the risk outweighs the reward. We shouldn't do it. The rest of the plan is solid and there are other ways to form a distraction. Like starting a fire away from the structures (so as not to damage the property) or put men in the hideaway, attack the guards and force them to retreat, and catch them in a pincer move and cut them down.

That makes no sense. Guarding them would use up our men, not free them to get more done. They're likely to break and run anyhow, chancing total freedom over death.

Let me lay this out for you simply. You let the merchants flee, they buy mercenaries in a nearby town and come back to siege or counterassault. These slaves free our hands for a few hours so we're not worried about the compound being retaken while we hunt down the leadership that can buy more troops for a recapture attempt.
What?! A siege? This is a bloody raid! Buying mercenaries?! You're making this way more complicated than it has to be! We outnumber them handily and our men are trained.

Whatever. Clearly you're not one to be reasoned with. Let's just get on with it.

Keep it civil, guys.  That was a fairly reasonable debate up until the end, though edit your posts rather than triple-posting please.  Also, quite tired, post will not be until later today.

For God's sake NO FREEING THE SLAVES. They're bloody property and the contractor said 'no looting', which also includes letting his valuable stock run away. We want to get paid this time and get a decent reputation, remember?! Hence we should fulfil the contract by following our employer's instructions. Slaves have always been expensive, and I'm sure they are in this universe as well.
Overall, aye. You may not agree with slavery, or treating people as property, but...when in Tenoctitlan, don't complain about the human sacrifices.

Not sure what Gerv's arguments were, but it's hard to think of ones which explain how this wouldn't anger the locals and cost us pay (and quite possibly our position!)...
