How do I show my dad that df is fun ?
« on: March 18, 2013, 05:17:13 pm »

So I'm playing df when my dad comes and asks me what I'm doing. (I'm 16 if you are asking yourself why I am still living at my parents. ) So I decide to tell him about the game and try and get him to try it, but he finds it pointless to play without a goal and stupid. So I am asking you, how do I show my dad that the game is great? Also how old are you guys? My dad is 47. Is he too old  for df ?

I'm pretty sure there's no maximum age limit for the ability to enjoy something.  Does your Dad play other videogames?  If so, which ones?

Well, it's not guaranteed that DF would appeal to him even if he did know of the immense complexity, i know most of my classmates probably wouldn't be able to get into it. Also no, he's not too old, ain't no such thing as too old for video games (well, unless age-related difficulties make it physically impossible to play, but those don't set in at 47). That, and i know that there are people in their 70's who play video games, which supports my idea that physical age and mental age are two entirely different things. :P

I mean, if your livid descriptions of the endless possibilities don't grab his interest, maybe point him towards Boatmurdered. If it's still a no go... Well, he's just not into it. Simple as.

It's not a matter of age or smarts. It's just that DF requires having a peculiar taste in games.

We need to know more about your dad, first.

What does he do?
What are his hobbies?
Does he play sports?
Does he read books?
Is he a "geek?"
Etc etc

What's his favourite colour?
Does he wipe while sitting down or standing up??
How old was he when he drank his first beer?
Has he ever been to Morocco?
What political party did he vote for in the last election?
Does he have any intention of entering a raffle during the next seven months?

You just accept that some people have other tastes instead of taking the 'Let me tell you about Dwarf Fortress' mentality?

That being said, there are people who love being told about DF but wouldn't play it. This is to be expected, as DF is a storymaking game where you are encouraged to perceive events within a narrative of your own making for greater enjoyment.

DF appeals to a very specific set of people, and can be broken down even further between the Fortress Mode lovers and the Adventure Mode lovers. I'm the latter. I find Fortress Mode very stressful and annoying, while Adventure Mode qualifies as one of the most modular roguelikes I have ever encountered.

Anyway, your father probably won't ever like DF in its current state because he perceives it as goalless. That's the issue with DF. You have to come to a goal and story of your own within the framework of the existing game. He might like a future-DF where Toady has gotten the game to the point of assisting the player with this task through a more fleshed-out world, but not present-DF.

Age is not only not a factor, older people are going to be a major market for video games eventually. Once you're in your late 70s you won't be doing much skydiving, but you'd have to be nearing death to be too withered for a video game. You don't even have to be able to walk. It isn't much like that right now because the current old people would have to adopt a new form of media to use video games that are mostly focused on a younger demographic, but when the Baby Boomers die and Gen X starts to grey....

It's easier than standing up. The sitting position means that the buttocks are spread for easier access than standing.

Ed, your banished from reality.
You don't need to leave bay12, but you do need to exit this realm of existence. I'm sorry it had to go down this way.

Also, it can be long to get in DF. The first time, I abandonned quickly, then get back several months after, and so on for a year.
Don't try to force him, maybe he's not interested, or doesn't want to try (his loss).

Accept that DF is not for everyone.  But lack of a goal is not a problem in DF.  You make your own goals, which means you never run out of things to do.  It can be something as grand as a megaproject, or something as simple as living entirely on farmed meat (no hunting, and no growing edible plants).  Reaching and exploiting the magma sea for the first time.  Attracting the monarch and actually keeping them and all the other nobles happy.  Catching and containing a titan or forgotten beast and feeding intruders to it.  Colonizing the caverns.  Colonizing Hell.  Sealing the fortress completely and trying to live (and reach your population cap) on nothing but what you can produce in-house.  Any number of other things, the sky's the limit.  Or perhaps the SMR is.
