How about this, the story can be on a large and resource rich/somehow vital planet. It also happens to be involved in a particular front with many sides involved. Essentially, it'd be a big gigantic clusterfuck of multiple sides and races fighting to capture that particular planet. Each story made by an author could be a short piece written about one side of that conflict and what happens, then the next author can write a piece representing a different side. That way, someone could write about the IG capturing a city for example, and the next story can be about a group of Orks trying to destroy it.

Oops, forgot about the Tau. :p Like some of the others here, I've never played the tabletop and most of what I know is from Dawn of War or the wikia.
I played it just long enough to learn about them- they were my chosen army. They aren't that aggressive, though, so they probably wouldn't get involved. Not to mention that they find warp travel difficult.

Well, if we wrote about the Imperial Guard, wouldn't this be considered a short story? :P

Seriously though, the Imperial Guard is one of my favourites. They have the seriousness and devotion missing in other military themed factions in other games.
Yeah, the Guard is awesome- a good example is Gaunt's Ghosts, but there are many other good stories out there.

I would back up this idea.
However, some factions would not work for this. Tyranids and Necrons in the fluff avoid fighting (or atleast the Tyranids avoid the necrons) and I imagine the Tau wouldn't want to march tons of troops into slaughter planet. (unless they had a vested interest in the place)

Indeed. So, any ideas on how we want to go about this? Setting, factions, etc.?

Just happened to read this, I gotta say it seems like all W40k plot lines resolve around the imperium facing like 4-6 different enemies(maybe thats just me), it seems somewhat cliche to me, what about just one enemy, and introducing another later on as a plot twist, or something? Or maybe introduce all them slowly if you must include many enemies.

So from what I have gathered ye of great talent shall be writing about the IG in their fight against the <<?????>> for 'X' forge-world, important place, etc. ?

What if the story followed the story of an ignominious guardsman in a fight on a backwater world? not the most important man in the not most important place?

That would be interesting, and we could still put in a of stuff. Also, do you guys think the world should be a deathworld or a normalish world?

I'm going to say normalish. I think the point is everything isn't super dramatic death and danger.

Normalish. Perhaps having a chaos storm and some Orks in the area?

What is the tone of these stories? Because Orks are the comic relief of the universe! Chaos on the other hand is very dark.

EDIT: I recant actually, chaos is the archetypal W40k villian I think, Orks being silly, and Tyranids a very dark and depressing enemy. Eldar and Tau are formidable foes to be sure, but are more difficult to describe as "villians". Necrons fall somewhere inbetween the "grimdark" Tyranids and archetypal Chaos factions, while the Dark Eldar are very archetypal and evilly.

SO how about this: we follow a guardsman or men (or women) through a campaign to retake a city, each time the timeline advances it's measured through the damage to a certain area all the characters in common visit? Maybe they reflect there and thats where alot of the stories' meaning flowers? then possible plot twist introducing orks or necrons or tyranids or something and in much more rapid segments (but more of them?) the characters all find some sort of reason to fight or etc. hm?

Just throwin' this out there, this thread intrigues me!

So who's going to start this then? Do we have any volunteers? I mean, I could but my writing is very unrefined and somewhat sloppy. I figure we can just iron out all of the details as we go.
