Prevent River Freezing
« on: March 15, 2013, 10:36:06 pm »

I am trying to figure out how I would divert a river underground so it will not freeze. I already have a tunnel drawing from it toward the center, and obviously diverting it from there will not work, since the source (from the South) will freeze and then water will simply stop flowing into the channel.

I am not even entirely certain that diverting it from the South edge of the map would help, because wouldn't it freezing in the region beyond my map prevent it from flowing into my map? I know this can happen, as I had one fort in the past that dammed a river, and when I finally lost and went into Adventure mode, I easily found the right river, since the river to the ocean South of that particular fort was a dry bed, due to the damn at the fort.

I keep reading about peeps pumping magma into channels just below the river.  I've no idea how it would work on the in-flow though.

By carving fortifications in the tiles of the map border where the inflow and exit is and having a constant flow of magma you should be able to keep that heated. if that will actually enable flow, i don't know

Magma is overrated.

This will work right here. Currently the only way to keep a river going if it would be frozen is to have a constant outflow of magma off the edge of the map through fortifications under the river source. (You might also want to set this up so that it only runs in the winter, to save magma).

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!
