Troubleshooting an internet connection
« on: March 15, 2013, 06:43:52 pm »

My desktop has had a wireless connection to my router. I can see the wireless network, connect to the wireless network, but I have no internet access....

Does anyone have any idea how to go about fixing this, please?

This happens a lot to my laptop after it's left running for too long. Try restarting the computer.

Have you tried running the wireless troubleshooter?

Just right click on your network icon in the bottom right, then select the troubleshooter button.

Cool, will have to do that when I'm back in front of it again. :)

One of the issues with asking for internet advice on a bad internet connection is, you have to go somewhere there is an internet connection....

It's like looking for your glasses... you may not be able to see them to find them.

One thing to check:  many laptops have a button on the keyboard to enable/disable the wireless.  Works sort of like numlock or scroll-lock.  If you hit it and turn off wireless, it may not be very obvious that's what's wrong.

Maybe not the problem, but I've seen more than one person bit by that...

Hi again. :)

Well, it's not the button that disables wireless on a laptop, because my desktop, smartphone and laptop do not connect.... :(

I attempted to connect my laptop direct to the router with an Ethernet cable. No dice.

I ran the troubleshooting program. It said something to the effect of, The DNS server might not be available, contact the network administrator. Windows Help and Support may have additional details.... (It did not appear to).

I do not know if this is helpful at all. Still not really sure what to do, honestly.

Thank you again for your time.

no thats really helpful actually, this tells me the wifi isn't shot and the computer can still recognize the router. try resetting the router and your cable modem, there should be something like a pinhole you can stick a paperclip in for each of them, just press them once and leave them disconnected until they are booted back up (usually 5 minutes). IF this is indeed a DNS error check follow these intructions. With everything connected, go to your start menu on your computer, go to all programs, look for Command Prompt in the accessories folder, in the command prompt type in
Code: [Select]
ipconfig /all
once done scroll up to find the dns addresses and post them here, if you dont see them you need to talk to your ISP about network issues.

Yeah, that typically means you need to reboot your router.

Did the pinhole paperclip thing on the router. It appears to have rebooted. I can't seem to find a pinhole on what can only be the cable modem (which the router plugs into...).

Ipconfig runs and then promptly disappears. I think I could capture the image it if I pressed printscreen a few times and eventually got it right when it flashed onscreen, then pasted it in an MS paint document.

Going to have to bug my landlord about this, seeing as the utility isn't in my name.... Router belongs to me, but otherwise I think his name is on the account or something and it's just part of the rent. Hum.

I would like to thank you all again for your help so far. I recognize that this is an area some of you have expertise with and I simply do not.

That moment when you realize that problems with internet connection now qualify as 'life advice.'

Of course, how else would we get to the "Life Advice" thread.
