Milk's Question General!
« on: March 14, 2013, 04:14:41 pm »

I've been playing dwarf fortress for a while now (about 5 months) and right now I am on my most successful fort (1 year don't laugh). But, finally, I had enough items for somedwarf to make a masterwork item. He made a "Uninful" or something. It says it's somesort of stone mini-forge. My question is, how do I view the description of the item, and how do I place it? In every screenshot I've seen of a masterwork item, it has these really nice descriptions. Mine doesnt, and I can't even find the thing. Can I have some help with this please?

EDIT:
This is now a general for me if I have any questions that I can't find the answer too on the wiki and such, you might help me get answers, or you might help others. It all depends! Have fun!

Hit the 'L" key to bring up your Artifacts.

Note that "masterwork" and "artifact" items are two completely different things.

Masterwork - This occurs when a dwarf with a high enough skill makes items. These function identical to any other item of the same type, but have a higher value. For weapons/armor this determines the multiplier on their hit/block chance. These will be announced by the message "Urist has create a masterwork xxxx" but no pausing or recentering will occur (in vanilla that is). If a masterwork is destroyed the creator will lose happiness based on the total number of masterowkrs they have created (more masterworks = less unhappiness).

Artifact - These are what you see on the forums with the fancy descriptions. These are the highest quality of item and come with built-in decorations (unlike masterworks). These are created by first a dwarf entering a strange mood (which will have a pause and recenter), then a dwarf claiming a workshop (which will pause and recenter), and then a notice about them creating the artifact (also with a pause and recenter). These artifacts can be viewed under the 'l' (L) menu. If you don't see this option, then you don't have any artifacts. Artifacts are indestructible in most cases, but if they are destroyed they do not affect the happiness of the creator.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!
Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead - A fun zombie survival rougelike that I'm dev-ing for.

Ah, thanks! Sorry, I'm just going to turn this thread into "Milk's question general" since I have the most weird complex questions (I guess they aren't, I just can't find them on the wiki or DF talk and such.) Anyway, thanks.

Another question, how do you know if a bridge is in it's up/down state? I can't seem to figure it out? When it disappears does that mean it's up? That's all I can think of that makes sense, I'm really trying to make a bridge that goes through a river and I can't seem to figure the states. Thanks!

In your case, the bridge is retracted, not up/down.

When you place a bridge there will be five options, retract and raise n/s/e/w. A bridge that's set to retract will simply disappear when a linked lever is pulled and the four that raise will form a wall on the corresponding edge.

Oh, thank you. Again, sorry for the stupid questions, I forget these things easily.
