I've been thinking. The dude obviously noticed some definite benefits, but I have to wonder how much of it was placebo effect? It's a shame there's not really a way to test it...

The benefits are more than just noticed.  He's been keeping track of practically everything about his body that can be measured since he started taking this stuff seriously.  He's had plenty to say about everything from blood work to sleep patterns.

Yes, there are changes, but are those due to the drink or believing in the drink? The body can work miracles on itself if it tricks itself sufficiently. Particularly with stuff like emotions and sleep patterns where it's all in your head anyways.

Wouldn't he ave to have a preconcieved notion of 'oh, this will improve my sleep patterns' for placebo effects to come in? Else he wouldn't have the notion it might improve in the first place. Besides, he seems reasonably scientific about this.

If the placebo effect is responsible for all these benefits, why would you ruin that for us? :<

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

For science!

But really though, hopefully other folks do some serious testing as well so we can actually see what happens in general public (or more specifically, the general public who are nutty enough to eat/drink Soylent), with whatever consumption patterns.

Ah, but the fun thing about the placebo effect is that it can work even if you know that's all that is going on.

So, are you saying we should all take an everything placebo every morning, to get that nice "I feel so much better, I cured everything this morning" feel?

Hmm, maybe. No idea if that would end up lessening the effect eventually or not, though.

Are we currently discussing whether or not people can build up a tolerance to placebos? Is that where this thread has gone now? :P

Hard day ahead? Better take a double dose of placebo to be sure you are up to it!

...

"Doctor, I need to up the dosage on my placebo, its just not cutting it anymore!"
"Hmm... say, have you tried new and improved placebo?  I'll write you a prescription"

...

Gotta go to the street corner and get hooked up with some supersebo, thats some good shit.  Concentrated, not like that shit you get across the counter.

...

Hi, I'm $name and I'm a placeboholic.

Looks like some people have started getting their pre-orders.

I have to say I'm a little concerned with the initial reaction to it from a "can I actually handle drinking this?" standpoint. But I'm still curious and may pick some up once the initial pre-order fulfillment stuff dies down and I've seen some more opinions on it.

Still awaiting mine.  Not a super early backer but at least not a late one.

Will give me time to get blood tests done first though.
