His generalizations discomfort me.

Yes. I aspecially have a problem with obesity being blamed on lack of willpower. There are quite enough diseases or genetical traits making obesity unavoidable.

Yeah, he provoked some debate in the comments with a couple of his statements like that.  As far as ignorant statements go those are very mild, though, and he's still pretty young.

The first one is mostly true in the sense that people don't do those things the way they used to.  Hammering steel by hand is the realm of hobbyists or a few very specialized purposes.  Fields are still plowed, but not nearly the same way they were 100 years ago.

And I think obesity is a very widely misunderstand thing still.  Few people who haven't struggled with the problem themselves or seen someone very close to them do so will not make that same generalization.

Interesting to note he's flavoring it with the same synthetic vanilla compound used in many other pharmaceutical products. Guess it wasn't all that tasty in raw form after all.

In the meantime, people are starting to post their own recipes.  Here's one.  The Poor Man's Soylent.

I am doing this now, for SCIENCE!

In actuality, just doing it partly, as I eat with family 2 days a week, so its going to be something like 4 days of it (due to 2 days and leftovers leading to partial day), plus I'm adding a bit on my own.

Total overall: Shake Soylent thingy: 1580 calories or so (1250 plus olive oil and the nutri-junk)
Additives: Lightly buttered toast and an egg: 225
Total daily: ~1805 calories

Notes so far: shake tastes like ass.  Do NOT mix the pills in with the shake.  2nd day tastes slightly less bad due to not doing that.

What this guy isn't new at all.

It's basically a stupidly prepared version of 'nutraloaf' the stuff they feed prisoners who are misbehaving. Nutraloaf is considered cruel and unusual punishment by human rights organizations and this guy basically made nutraloaf slurry.

He has basically committed a crime against humanity.

I don't know if you're joking DWC. I didn't laugh.

Soylent is not something revolutionary. Soylent is something amusing and practical. Soylent is a hobby that other people have taken interest in. There is nothing new about Soylent except that someone is actually doing it and people have taken notice.

As speculated by many, Kickstarter rejected Soylent.  It was a minor setback.  Instead, he will be launching on Crowdhoster tomorrow.  Looking forward to seeing how well this goes, and whether he was any nice funding incentives in store.  Also really excited about how quickly this seems to be moving forward.

Major Update!

The Crowdhoster is live.  He's asked for $100k and has received $150k in only a few hours.

Well, so far on the 'cheap version (slightly modified to be less terrible, kinda combo of 1st cheapo and 2nd one posted earlier)' I can only manage it once a week... though I do seem to be able to do more sit-ups in a row the day afterwards (not terribly a strict comparison though).

I'll put down on the real deal and do comparisons later.

Mmm.... people....

I'm thinking about trying one of the DIY recipes myself.  Don't really want to wait until August, or even later if I don't support the crowdfund.

This is fundraising.  He's not selling the stuff yet.  He's just offering some of the product as reward for investment.  If he sold it at the price he plans to once full scale production begins, then he wouldn't cover the costs of launching full scale production.
