As someone who is constantly tempted to drink antacids because of how delicious I find that sweet/chalky mixture, this update is... disappointing, actually!

It sounds like it was absolutely delicious - sweet, thick, and chalky? Hell yes.

Ah well... I really just want it to arrive at this point... if it takes much longer I'll be gone and won't get it at all unless I figure out how to change my shipping address...

Bleh, chalk. I'm happy to hear that chalk is not soylent. I'd actually like to try this at some point.

I've held considerable skepticism for a lot of medical stuff. Most of what we know about biology comes from experiments on rats, and then trying to identify factors via correlation. There's a lot of bad science out there taken as fact, especially when it comes to nutrition. Like 30 years ago, fat was evil. Now it's sugars.

If we can't get basic stuff like that straight, I'd be skeptical of any mega nutrition stuff. Also things like this has been around for a while. Herbalife sells these 'weight loss' shakes and they're very healthy, just not cheap. And burgers/hot dogs/nuggets are something of cheap miracle stuff - what makes it unhealthy are the oversugared drinks and salted potatoes that they come with.

I'm glad that people are testing it out though. True science is experimentation. We'll see the side effects of this within a decade. If you guys aren't dead or sick by then, I'll jump onto this :P

Herbalife stuff is not anything like this (nor is it actually healthy).

The stuff that is anything like this is expensive ($100+ per meal), and tastes absolutely terrible.

Fat were never evil according to nutritional science, nor were sugars. Both have always been vital to good nutrition. The pop.media science fads have basically nothing to do with medical research except insofar as they scrounge research paper titles for ideas on what to hype next.

The products that are actually like this HAVE been in use for over a decade, and this is mostly making those affordable, palatable, and more tailored to the circumstances of its audience.

Now that Soylent 1.0 has surpassed our standards for nutrition and flavor, we can’t wait to hear what you think of it and can begin to look forward to the exciting work of Soylent 2.0.

Spoiler, Soylent 2.0 is real people.

Ok.. It's basically refined soy protein, with artificial sweetener, and some stabilizers.

Sounds... ...  'yummy'.

Really, they would probably have done better than to use sucralose. Yes, carbs can be bad, but it depends on the carbs. In this case, I would suggest malt as an ingredient. Sure, that introduces grain proteins, which might make people with celliac disease get the shits with cramping (but they get that from ANYTHING with wheat in it)-- but it allows you to add yeast extractives without ruining the flavor, and the malt itself has a nice sweet hit that isnt very sweet, from the maltose. Yeast extractives would give a strong vegan friendly dose of otherwise difficult to obtain B vitamins.

Why care about the taste at all? Just insert a tube straight into your stomach. Preferrably sealed with a Hello Kitty cap.

I'm hoping they get approved in Canada before the summer, and at least before I start university in the fall. >_>

I'm thinking that if I replace one meal a day (lunch) with this, I'll probably get a lot more nutrition than I'm getting now.

Bachelor chow, NOW with FLAVOR!

(Alternatively, the "nutritional blends" seven used to make on voyager. Looks similar even.)

The difference, of course, being that you eat this day-to-day to get all your body needs, and if you want a steak or a cake or a gigantic fried chicken one day, you can. No fuss, and since you're getting nearly perfect (as far as we can tell, at least) nutrition on a day to day basis, pigging out once in a while won't be as detrimental.

Plus it'll be a treat instead of obligation, and you can put more effort into it when you actually want something special, instead of having to do it every day. :v

And update: Soylent supposedly FINALLY shipping April 21.
Meanwhile, I've got 7 months of fairly detailed diet data to compare to (such a pain in the ass, I surely won't miss all the measuring and cooking)

I've only got a month ordered, so likely I'll swap to a home-brew recipe after thats over to continue a test for two months in a row.
