What update introduced the new weight system?
« on: March 12, 2013, 06:36:16 pm »

I've been away from Dwarf Fort for some time and I'm finding it hard to adjust to the new minecarts/wheelbarrows system of hauling, could someone tell me what update this was added in so that I can return to a time before it?

.34.07 I'm pretty sure.

I'll agree that you should probably just learn it, since every version from here on out is going to use it.  :)

But it's a completely optional feature. So while you should learn it, you don't have too.  :P

Before you give up on the new version, please keep in mind that minecarts are entirely optional, and wheelbarrows are really only needed for stone and perhaps furniture stockpiles. To use wheelbarrows, just build them of wood and assign them to stockpiles in the pile's q menu. Dwarves will then automatically use the wheelbarrows. Do note however, that a stockpile may only have up to three wheelbarrows, and once it has any dwarves will no longer haul items by hand if the wheelbarrows are in use. I believe this is a bug. If you need to get around it, just make several smaller stockpiles.

There, now you know everything important about minecarts and wheelbarrows and don't have to abandon the current version.

They were added in 34.08, 34.07 is the latest version before them.

Note that 34.06 is buggy as all hell and 34.08 is no better, so 34.07 is the best you can do for before minecarts. Wouldn't recommend playing before 34.11, though.

You're abandoning the greatest workshop micromanagement (via stockpile linking) tool we got because you don't want to deal with using a bit of extra wood for wheelbarrows? At least say it's because you're not comfortable yet with moving over to the new rubble-from-mining system.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

it took me a while to adapt too, i kept going because the new version added other features i liked.
now i must admit the new version is better.. as long as i remember to make wheelbarrows(and set stone stockpiles to 3 wheelbarrows each), and that i cant make lead bins anymore.
lead bins work fine when they don't get moved, now that bins get carried around all the time, lead bins are right out.

but yeah, 34.07 is the last stable version before the hauling changes

You COULD mod all the stones/ore to be almost weightless but it makes stonetraps near useless

Tip: Make stone blocks from stone for building walls, etc. Stone blocks are much lighter than regular stone.

If you lack wood, light metals work just as well. Plus with all the mine carts, quantum stockpiles and easier sorting, its just as easy to deal with the slightly increased micromanagement and create a more efficient and space-saving work area than to mod weights for everything.

You just need to build twenty wheelbarrows and then carry on exactly as though the game had never changed. There are more options for micromanagement now, but so long as you have a load of spare wheelbarrows around they manage themselves.

There are still a few annoying bits with the new hauling. The fact that wheelbarrows can only be used moving things to stockpiles, for example. Designate some gold furniture and your haulers will still try to hand carry it from the stockpile or forge to the site, slowly. Or the creative stockpiling needed to prevent constant seed cancellation, which at best lowers it to occasional seed cancellation.

Stonetraps are already near-useless...
