Stockpile Problems

Hey guys, I searched high and low for an answer to this, but all I can find are bug reports without solutions.

My issue is that my stockpiles aren't working right. I dunno what's going on, but I've had this problem on and off for as long as I can remember. For example, I will have a stockpile that I create for wood, and my dwarfs will collect and stockpile until it gets full. Once full, however, they never restock it the moment some wood is removed. This is the case for any kind of stockpile I can think of. I end up having to remove the stockpile and reset it if I want my dwarfs to move anything for me.

All my workshops are filling up with things that my dwarfs don't want to move to the (perfectly fine) stockpiles. I've checked the "collect only from" options to see if they were right, and they seem to be. I've honestly tinkered with every conceivable option. Am I doing something wrong or missing something basic?

I'm running 34.11 on Vista 64-bit, with the Lazy Newb Pack.

well, you're a newcomer, right? you need to make stockpiles for the finished goods... If you ordered some beds, your dwarves will go, take the wood, make a(some) bed(beds?), and will let it there because the beds go to a furniture stockpile, being made of wood doesn't mean it will be put into a wood stockpile...

I find it to be a good idea to just have a large sorting stockpile somewhere that holds everything.

Well, not entirely a newcomer. I have been playing for some time now. I just take a lot of breaks every year.

I should have been more precise in my description. The wood stockpile I was referencing was for trees that I cut down.

I find it to be a good idea to just have a large sorting stockpile somewhere that holds everything.
I did this after a while just to test and see if there is a problem with the way that stockpiles are working for me. Choosing everything did not solve my problem, unfortunately.

Remove all of the stockpiles.

Replace them, but do not change any of the "take from/give to" settings. I am almost positive that crap is bugged because it never works the way the wiki says it should for me either. If I set on stockpile to "take from anywhere" and "give to workshop" with the workshop giving to a 3rd stockpile, the "take anywhere" pile takes but will never give anythig to the designated workshop, the workshop fills its own stockpile with the finished goods that should be going to the 3rd stockpile, and the 3rd stockpile remains empty.

The only time the stockpiles allow me any workflow, is if they are only organized by materials that go in them, not where they send or receive their stock from.

yes tidy foot, i'm speaking of your wood stockpile(log stockpile?), please tell the details, what you ordered to do, the distance(this matters sometimes) of the workshop, the give\take orders, everything.

stockpiles including give/take orders work fine for a lot of people (me included).

new players tend to accidentally mess up the "standing orders -> gather wood" (o,w) which messes up your wood stockpile.

i agree that it's not necessarily a good idea to use a lot of give/take orders until you're really comfortable how things work, just because it's one more thing that can go wrong and isn't indicated very clearly in the interface ... and I certainly don't rule out there being *some* bugs in it, just not so blatant as "they don't work"

The dwarfs cut the wood, then the haulers came in and stacked it all in the stockpile. After using some to build some beds, no one ever grabbed any more of the extra wood to put int he stockpile.

I've had the same thing happen with stone as well.

As far as I know, hauling isn't bugged.  Most likely it's something you've done, or need to do.

If you have no idlers, they may all be busy, making it look like nothings being done.  I find making groups of stone haulers with no wood hauling, and vice versa, helps because dwarfs have A.D.D. and will haul a stone, walk all the way to haul a log, then move an item and so on, wasting loads of time just walking around.  Also, I try to assign farmers to stone hauling, and miners/craftsdwarfs to wood.  This way it's less likely they'll get pukey on me.

I was closely watching them, and was noticing some very odd behavior. Thinking that I might have some logistical issues, I forbid everything in my base, then reclaimed it. Now they're scrambling all over the place, moving things to their proper area.

In my opinion this may be a problem with your patience :P New hauling jobs will be scheduled at the end of your [j]obs list, looking like they will never move the wood. But if they were moving it in the first place, the stockpile should be set up correctly.

I have an addition to this question, to spare making another topic about it.
Finished goods stockpile, with bins set to max for the stockpile, plenty of unused bins.
Dwarfs will not put the crafts from the pile into bins.
Any insight here?

It can take your dwarves a looooong time to fill up a stockpile with bins.
