children migrant waves
« on: March 12, 2013, 05:21:09 pm »

it happens in every fort i make! waves upon waves of dwarfspawn who eat and drink all the booze and then get kidnapped by some retarded gobling because they went outside to drink...

i am currently using the lazy newbs pack and the child cap doesn't seem to be doing anything! i'll be fine with 10 kids if someone knows what im doing wrong, if not then the magma sea is where their next trip's going to be

From my experience, the child cap works. Set it to [0:0] and you'll see the difference.

Child cap only effects children that are born in your fortress, not children that migrate in.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Is the world young? This usually only happens to me when it is.

Another trick is to edit the RAWs so that all dwarves are born as fully grown adults; or like me and set them so they are born as childreb (Skipping baby) and the. Grow to adulthood the next year.

I may be evil, but if the child/infant numbers are high, I stop chasing kidnappers.  A sleep in a newly (but temporarily) assigned luxury bedroom, a fine meal in the luxurious dining hall, and Ma 'n' Pa are ecstatic again.

Make the beds of the children in the space where a now raised bridge goes down. Lower the bridge on them.  :P

Dwarves don't really care. The child isn't dead and there are no thoughts for kidnapping, so the whole incident gets ignored. It's the same thing for artifact destruction -- there's nothing in the game to tell them how they should feel about it, so they don't.

Kidnappings seem like a happy event all round. The goblin gets what it came for, the child is happy to be free, the child's friends and relatives have no opinion on the matter, the rest of the dwarves don't have to get within stabbing distance, and the overseer has one less mouth to feed with no reduction of the labour force.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Now that you mention it, I've never had a boohoo from a lost child or had to implement Tantrum Prevention Measures for it.  Silly dwarfs.

Put your children in a burrow with a well but without alcohol. That will keep them away from the boze.

I don't remember if children respect burrows (or any sort of authority for that matter). If you despise the little pests, create a fort in an old world were your dwarven civ has gone extinct or enslaved. You don't get dorf caravans, but you don't get many migrants and almost no children at all, with even fewer couples too.

Re: old world - if you play a world for a long time (twelve years or more), all migrating children will grow up on their next birthday, because they get drafted from historical persons and get qualified as children according to their age at the end of worldgen. In a really long-running fort, you'll receive gaggles of sixty-year-old 'children' who grow up into completely skill-less peasants at their next birthday. It has the advantage of allowing you to prime them for less-pointless moods than the endless stone and woodcrafts normal children will churn out.
