Weird Poultry
« on: March 11, 2013, 10:49:17 pm »

So I just noticed something in my game as I was in the process of butchering a bunch of turkeys and I had kinda noticed it before but didn't investigate. In my game apparently various poultry do no give raw hides yet according to the wiki they are suppose to and I'm sure I've gotten hides from turkeys before in the past. But what's more weird is that apparently my turkey lack bones...and hide both.....I find this VERY disturbing. I get meat, skull, fat, intestines. No bone no skin. I shall butcher a goose, peafowl, and chicken to see if this holds true with them.

I'm really not sure about this, but it could be that you don't let them age long enough. That is, until they stop growing. Animals usually produce more resources at a higher age.

Size definitely can affect this, but I was under the impression that if they were large enough to produce meat you'd always get bones and a hide too.  Perhaps not.  I know someone did some extensive testing to show how butcher byproducts were determined by the game, but I have no idea where that thread is now.

I do wait for the birds to become adults before I butcher. As of right now this is what I have acquired from birds that I have had running around long enough to true adult birds. The only bird not sampled was my two Great Horned Owls

Turkey Hen A - Skull
Turkey Hen B - Intestine, skull, 8 fat, skin, 9 meat, 6 bone
Turkey Hen C - skull, 2 fat, skin, 2 meat
Goose A - Intestine, skull, Skin, 8 fat, 8 meat, 6 bone
Goose B - Intestine, Skull, 8 Fat, 8 Meat, 6 bone, Skin
Hen - Skull
Guineahen A - Skull
Guineahen B - Skull, 2 Fat, Skin, 2 Meat
Peahen - Intestines, skull, 8 fat, skin, 9 meat, 6 Bone
Duck - Skull

It seems very random what I get from the poultry in game for butcher-able items. Both of the turkeys were full adult poultry that had been around for at least a season as was the same with the geese, guineas, Peafowl, and chickens.

If I recall, things like bones and meat were done on a per limb / body part basis, with each part needing to be of a certain size before it would yield anything.  If none of the animal's parts were large enough, you only got the skull.

My guess then is that the adult size of most of these animals straddles the boundary for each body part.  So some animals will be large enough to give a few bits, others won't.  Even at adult size individuals vary a bit for this purpose.

Humm I guess I'll leave this whole mess of Turkeys in their cage then till they are a bit bigger before letting them out. Lets try that.

To get full yield from a turkey the turkey needs to have reached an age of 2 years old, 1 year beyond the point where it becomes and adult. Other turkeys that are younger then that will give less butchering results depending on how old they are.
