The most annoying/saddest/worst part is that we have no flippin' idea when the release is coming out exactly.
I'm not saying I don't like tension, but when I KNOW WHEN an update/release is coming out, I can "spread my excitement evenly" for that period.

Any chance of it happening this month?
Probably not. My guess is for late April at the absolute soonest, with a much more likely date in late May-June.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!
Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead - A fun zombie survival rougelike that I'm dev-ing for.

It would be pretty funny if I retired a fort, came back to it later and found it managed so much better than I ever could have done.

Jumping and climbing because DWARF FORTRESS IS NOW A PLATFORMER.

Come on, you just KNOW people will be building really elaborate obstacle courses in fort mode - perhaps with an Adamantine Face Inverter as the reward - then having an adventurer go all the way out to it and uploading the save.

That got me thinking about building a super awesome artifact room above magma which requires you to jump and climb to get into it, retiring the fort, and then sneak into said Fort in adventure mode with the new sneaking mechanics and loot the room! Now it will be easier to loot forts if they are retired because items won't scatter anymore (I hope) And it would be even more cool if the guards stiil obeyed orders from fort mode, so you can have them still guard places :)

New Megaproject Idea:
DF-Prince of Persia in Adventure Mode.

Complete with spikes, guards, and all sorts of other trappings, and maybe the random potion here and there. Bonus, beat this crazy-huge platformer megaproject within an hour.

You must be new here :P Back when 34.01 was released, nobody had any idea when the update would be released until the exact day. I'm pretty sure it was the same with   31.01.

I started playing before interactions, vampires, necromancers, dungeons, tombs, towns-with-keeps-in-the-middle, sewers, and giant peach-faced lovebirds.

That update was big and we had no idea when it would come out. The day it came out almost took people off-guard. The day 31.01 came out actually did take people off guard, I think.

My way of working out when the next big release will come is I wait until it's nearly done, then I think of when I'd like it to come out within reason (aka by the end of the month or mid April) then I add about 3 months on top of that. If it comes before then, I'm pleasantly surprised. It's worked for the last 4 years.

Yes, release prediction is pretty much impossible.  Still, there don't seem to be that many changes left over from the stated goals, so it mainly depends on how long it takes to get things "cleaned up" to the point where the release is playable.  That could take any amount of time.  There has been a lot added, and I'm sure most of it is pretty rough around the edges right now.

So far the things I remember being planned (but unfinished) for this release are:
  • combat overhaul (ongoing) (could take any amount of time, probably the longest time of anything on this list)
  • pulping (doesn't sound complicated, but might be?)
  • kobold (and possibly surface animal-person) camps/sites (probably not too long, expected simpler than other civ sites)
  • tree roots, multi-tile tree-felling (depends on how detailed it is)

As a rough estimate, that's probably at least a week per feature, and after that will be just pure cleanup.  Note that devlogs when Toady's doing bugfixing on his own like that are usually quite entertaining.  You will know the release is impending when he starts talking about things going hilariously wrong.

I wonder: If you recreate the zones of Metal Gear Solid 3 in their entirety, will creature placement after you retire the fortress look anything like it does in MGS3?

Also whether a glitched permanently burning dwarf will keep burning after fortress retirement. THE FURY!

Bonus points if he was burned being launched from a catapult through a ring of fire to become the first Dwarf to fly. Or possibly the first Dwarf in hell.

I wonder how Toady is going to handle cutting down the new trees.

I hope they actually fall over instead of just turning into a pile of logs at the base of the tree.

Plus Dwarves getting crushed by falling trees sounds like some good ole fashion !!FUN!!

Mmh, it could switch the tree's z (height) dimension for x or y depending on the direction it's fell from, place it with the trunk at ground level, then flip upside down (broken branches) anything that would end below the ground.

If it needs intermediate animations, it could flip z from bottom level to top, and displace the rest of the tree to the tip of the now lying down trunk.
