So this is becoming a thing.

https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/

I must say, I didn't grow up playing the Ultima games. I never even really knew about them until I watched a Let's Play of Ultima VII. However, since then I have grown quite fond of the series as they give quite deep and interactive role playing experiences.

This one, while not an Ultima game per say (For the obvious reason that EA still owns the rights to Ultima) seems to be set to become something very similar to those RPG games of 1990's.

Spoilered below is a feature list from the Kickstarter page.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I read an interview about this on Rock, Paper, Shotgun (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/tag/shroud-of-the-avatar/) and to clarify on the multiplayer segment; apparently the world will be one persistant world shared between players, but not inhabited by players. So if one player buys a house somewhere, everyone else sees that house bought and owned by that player. Other things exist like being able to let the game take names from contact lists you give it and name NPC's after friends, co-op play with friends and so forth.

I'm intrigued, and they look set to achieve their rather modest Kickstarter goal before too long.

Something about this feels lacking but I can't put my finger on it... and I know I say that about everything but in this case I honestly feel like I am not nitpicking.

This feels rather barebones and that Lord British is using his pull rather then the game itself being used as the pull.

Heh, I wonder if EA might sue Garriott for making something too close to the Ultima mythos.

I remember UO's Britannia being literally covered with houses. I'm not sure how he thinks he'll possibly be able to fulfill demand for player housing on a single shared persistent world (Second Life can only do it by charging fees in real money, and charging people for renting entire sims, and even then a sim is run on a server which also runs other sims, so good performance isn't guaranteed).

I finished watching an interview and apparently they're planning to release the game in five episodes, one per year, where each will add more world space for players to buy houses and shops in. Though he did also say that if they have anything like Ultima Onlines population they really can't provide enough housing spaces for everyone, which would in turn create demand for selling and buying houses.

I'm... eh about that. I can enjoy the idea of a player driven economy but I tend not to like the idea of potentially missing out on things because of reasons outside of my control (though I have no problem with elements that I can experience across multiple play throughs).

I have read there will be an offline mode for those who want a solely singleplayer experience like Ultima 4 or 7, but I think it will be completely seperate from the online elements, so no back and forth between online and offline. Of course, it's really too early for specific information about such things to be available.

Maybe the games Single player and multiplayer will be divided.
I mean... Eve Online managed to do this just "fine" (excessive fully legalized griefing aside) in spite of being fully online.

Anyway i assume this will be a expanded version of UO with a built in singlep layer component... and that's wonderful news on its own.

Well, my cousin just gave me a ticket into the closed alpha for this. It's currently at alpha R6, and I'll be playing it as much as is possible. AFAIK it's only a few days a month for now, for bug-fixes and dev cycling.

I'll have a look and see if there's any NDA conditions (so far I've just been told to make sure people know it's in alpha, so not representative of final release), and will give the best report I'm able to soon. Hopefully with piccies, etc.

Hail Britannia, thieving every-goddamned-thing, and the losing of eighths!

Non-instanced housing just seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

How would you like to join the game two months after release and be told "sorry, literally every house is taken forever, too bad"?

Also, only "a few dozen" city houses? They are going to be bought up ASAP by people with no lives who can grind gold 20 hours a day, and resold for such high prices only people who buy gold from gold spammers will be able to afford them.

The cynic in me wonders if they are going to sell the houses (especially the super rare city ones) in a cash shop for a RL monthly rent, because that's the only way I can see them thinking it's a good idea.

Yeah, that was my only major complaint with what was presented as well. Especially if you are capable of owning multiple properties at the same time? Yeah, a group of people who kickstarted (for the no property taxes forever) will buy up all the property and sit on it until they want to make a silly amount of money (in game or out, you know it'll show up on an auction site as well if the game is popular enough.)

Re: Shroud of the Avatar: Deceptive Advertising
« Reply #11 on: July 29, 2016, 06:37:11 am »

I'm resurrecting this to complain about deceptive advertising. tl;dr Always read the fine print, you won't necessarily receive everything in the advertised picture.

To remind everyone, the devs have been selling backer pledges which contain various digital goodies. Over the past year, they've been expiring these, putting a nice, big, red "expired" label over the image advertising the pledge to make it abundantly clear that that pledge is no longer available. With the latest round of expirations, they only expired some of the goodies, specifically the house and basement, instead of the entire pledge. However, the image of the pledge still shows the house. The only indication that the house and basement are no longer part of the pledge is a little bit of text they added to the descriptions of those items. So, you click on the house to buy the pledge, but said house no longer comes with the pledge. This is deceptive.

Considering I paid a good sum of money to upgrade to a pledge with a house, I'm rather peeved I didn't get the house. I've already emailed their support to try to fix this, but given they have a blanket statement against all refunds buried in the FAQ, I'm not very hopeful.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.
