Hello, everyone! I'm a new DF player and feel truly overwhelmed by the steep learning curve of the game. I use O'Reilly's "Getting Started with Dwarf Fortress" guide to understand the game. Should I or is the guide outdated? And another question. The game has no sound and I get this message whenever I run it: Dynamically loading the OpenAL library failed, disabling sound. Also, the game feels too fast for me and I wonder if this is its normal speed. Do note that fps are capped at 100. Any solutions anyone?

the game is fast and it's normal, just press spacebar to pause the game when you is looking for something or trying to remember wich is the lever wich lever raises the bridge and the fortresss and the magma flood autodestruction one...

That started off helpful and slid into incoherency shortly after.

Spacebar pauses the game, as accessing most menus, such as the (q)uery menu or the (b)uild menu.

In the init file in /data there's an option to disable sound, which may help (normally music plays). You can also lower the FPS cap to something slower while you're getting used to it. Many people lower it to 50-80, which can be helpful. The FPS is directly tied to how quickly the game progresses, so a fast FPS makes things progress faster.

The guide, as far as I know, is still good. One issue I remember from the thread is that it tells you to set the mineral scarcity too low, which causes the site finder to be unable to locate flux. I think there are a few other minor mistakes in it, but in terms of being usable for this version, it definitely is. Here's the thread on it.

I believe the book is quite up-to-date and applicable.

There are also some tutorials by the book's author (TinyPirate), for an older version http://afteractionreporter.com/dwarf-fortress-tutorials/
Not sure how much overlap there is, but those and the wiki (http://dwarffortresswiki.org) should get you going.

Personally, I think simple trial and error is the key to learning this game. Experiment, find things out on your own and go to the circus, it's fun. Also, if you don't already know, learn the definition of FUN around here.

Now that's what I call a quick response! Actually eight. About the sound issue. I run Linux Ubuntu version 12.10 32bit, I have 2GB ram and my processor is an Intel core 2 quad. I have no idea what audio driver I use. Do note that I'm new to Linux. I already tried this: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=62159.msg1469273#msg1469273 but it's not working for me. Thank you all for your help. Oh, and I have already learned the definition of FUN. Losing = Fun  :P

Edit: The baby murderer became a friend of the fortress, which started a loyalty cascade, and now most of the squad is dead.

Welcome!  It is super fast at first but will gradually slow down through the course of the fort, until inevitable Frames per second death when *everything* takes too long and you found a new fort instead.

The sound disabling might be a thing related to the tile set you are using (I assume you are using one, it is a good place to begin before you intuit the layouts in ascii), Mayday disables sound, as I recall

Welcome to the forums!

When I installed the game, I had the same sound issues as you, but the symlinks worked fine for me.
Looking through a few old threads, it seems like some other forum users had success with installing the libopenal-dev and libsndfile-dev packages. Try running
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install libopenal-dev
sudo apt-get install libsndfile-dev

Good luck, and have Fun!

I wonder if the game has become odd.

The game felt a bit too fast for me so I set the fps cap to 50.
It feels like the dwarves and everything else is walking reallife speed and I have been playing like this for 3 years.
