"Hey, you're alive and recovering, that's all I want from you at this point. Still, the circumstances around that incident are strange to say the least. Considering that you had a torn-off arm with you, and that Valerian said that you had used magic and assaulted him. It's odd that all this had happen, and I do not believe you to be a mage, though that could explain how you managed to be so efficient at organizing the guard.

But, as an offer of gratitiute, I can offer you protection while you are still within these walls, and I won't let you be taken back to the capital unless the inquisition gets involved."

He bursts out laughing, reaching up to itch the bandages across his temple. "You believe right. Mages can do things other than mess with people's minds, if I'm not mistaken. And the guard is so efficient because it used to be my father's bodyguard. I still think I'm paying those louts in the castle to keep the city safe."

[1] He suddenly turns his eyes towards you, blinking and you can finally notice the bright, silvery hue of the iris and their strange, fey speckles in the light.
"And assault? Hah. I was trying to perk up his courage. The beast I fought is a terrible being of rotten, congealed together flesh and bone...it's going to produce more of its macabre kin with the bodies of the dead."

"When I first saw it, I wanted to scream until my lungs gave out." he lapses into silence, glancing back down at his book and visibly shivering. He turns a page, breathing out slowly.

Question the captain if I could just acquire a pass here.
[6] "I can file you one, mayhaps, saer. And as for meeting the king? Perhaps. You'd have to his palace and file an appointment thingy." he shakes his head, "Swear to the Three there's too much writing in this nation. It'd cost you though, since you aren't a diplomat, merchant or important person, and you are from Nocte."
He explains it'd be .3 of a ducat to get your pass-medallion.
[5]vs[2] The guard glances sharply at the Captain at his mention of paper-work, and the pass-medallion's price before imperceptibly shrugging her shoulders.

"That...That does not exactly explain the arm that was reportedly with you, that we now have locked away for safekeeping. But the beast you describe? That sounds like something straight out of a nightmare. Any advice you have to offer that can aid us against these... beasts would be of great help to us.

One other thing though, the eyes. They seem a bit... odd."

Mad king's gone on reform-fever, eh? Mad or not, this is most interesting. Perhaps the North shall soon become civilised? Ha!

"Passing through Nocte, not from Nocte. Regardless, I'll pay the fee."

"Now, if you do excuse me, I shall head to that village over the next hill northwards, stay there for two days then proceed to the nearest city."

We'll see how intelligent this man's spy corps be.

Pay the man his due. Head north to the next village. Stay for a few days and record what anything that comes my way. If no one comes to visit me for suspicious behaviour, head to the capitol.

1.7 d remaining.

[1]"I think it's the second or third arm from that monster I told you about."

[6]He pauses at your words about his eyes, shutting them for a few long moments. Before opening them again. The color is dim now, a muted iron grey, but he seems pale, and blood begins to drip from his nose. He doesn't seem to notice it or pretends not to.
[4]"Can't even control it anymore. May I request a blindfold of some sort, your lordship? I'll trade you that information in return."

"Regardless, your first instinct upon looking at the beast will be to run. Don't. It's fast. Very fast. It'll chase you done and wear you out so it doesn't have as much of a fight to deal with." His tone doesn't change, and he speaks as if he was talking about inclement weather or a sick cow.

"Passing through Nocte, not from Nocte. Regardless, I'll pay the fee."

"Now, if you do excuse me, I shall head to that village over the next hill northwards, stay there for two days then proceed to the nearest city."
[2]After counting out your coins, the captain frowns to himself, before stating, quite simply, "Lot of these coins are from Nocte. And by lot I mean all of them." he looks up at you, frowning, before asking you in a bland tone of voice, "Got something to admit, Chronicler?"

[3] You hear the slight shifting of swords within sheaths around you. A few of the guards are openly resting their hands on their hilts.

((my charisma trait is being taken into account, right?))

The Chronicler remained calm.

"I have been in Nocte for some time, captain. All my coins of Tian have been used up. As for the coins of Nocte...a scholar generally works for the nobility in the nation he inhabits. In my case, I spent some time with the Duchess of Blackberry and the various kings of Nocte, although Logan isn't much for scholars, truth be told...one of the reasons I decided to head here."

"Employment, mostly. If I said altruism, I'd be a liar. Simply put, I'd be willing to work for you for free on this...whatever it is your doing, room and board included of course (OOC: Insignificant pennies), in order to build my repute up in this kingdom as a mercenary. I'd give you a list of my accomplishments, but then again, you were there for the most significant. So what do you say?"

Hrosskel smiled like a child who wanted some candy.

"You know you won't regret it."

"I swear by the aspects, this assignment of mine is getting weirder and weirder. While I am not really fond of mercenaries.... I know you well enough othave you onboard with me. Come along, lets see what manner of beast besieged the kingdom this time"

---------------------------
At the village....

The situation was unsettling, and despite seeing quite few horrors of war during his time, now Valerian could not settle himself. The situation and the circumstances piling up were getting weirder and his confidence did not rise significantly. Still, it was his order to take care of this and he would do so. He silently cursed himself for not asking the ex-captain more questions about the monster and the circumstances, but he wasn't too sure of the man anyway.

"Hrosskel, Ramus, This place needs to be searched thoroughly. Be on your guard, we don't know what happened here exactly or what we will face."

Search the village thoroughly. Look for clues, but have the mercenary regiment guard the perimeter of the village while the rest of the party is busy with looking.

Jarod blinked. He was surprised it had worked so well.

"One of two things. Either financial support, or help in actually containing them.

Financial support is an obvious option. With more revenues, the Inquisition can field more men, allowing me to spend a strong garrison watching the mages we capture, and still be able to have a force capable of hunting either beasts or mages.

The other option is... Peculiar. If a mage shows good signs of cooperation and he surrenders peacefully in the first place, he could be sent to reside with priests. The priests would have a good influence on the mages - purging them of sin through prayer and holy teachings, and ensuring they remain calm and peaceful. This has the benefit that the king would not be the one to oversee the mages, and as such could not turn them into his own personal army; it also eases the danger. One mage can be handled by local guards with enough care, while a hundred mages in one fortress are dangerous enough to wipe out the kingdom if they actually get together.

There is also a third option - not helping. I am still amazed at your generosity, and will understand if you decide not to support me. The choice is yours."

Ramus nodded to the man as he downed the last drops of ale in the wineskin in his hand before placing it in the bag at his side, turning so he can look at the collection of men behind him he spoke,

"You heard him get moving! Nalsean you and your men guard the left side, Tomas the same with you on the right, Yulrich you guard the way we came in, and Elric you lazy bastard guard the front. As for you Jared, you and your men are with me here in the center to reinforce whatever side I see fit now go bring me the other wineskin before I have you whipped."

Have my men move into position on the perimeter of the village.

Starting the next morning, scouts begin fanning out looking for more Warg forces for our army to engage, and gathering up lost or injured townsfolk. If battle is not pressing, the injured unit is order to rest in whatever lodging we secure.

Fortify and resupply damaged local towns with our 2d worth of aid money once they are secure, reinforcing their defenses if needed.

[5] vs [2+2] The Warg tracks are traced back to a village in the north, right on the border of the massive forest that surrounds Nocte Valley. Where a pack much, much larger than the others lay resting, cattle and cows, obviously the village livestock, lay in piles of bone and gore. Near them are the other sort of gore. Humans remains being pecked clean by crows when the Wargs aren't ripping them apart and devouring them. A large, massive even for a Warg, black coated beast with a number of scars, prowls the village.
[6] The scouts, while counting the Wargs and trying to asses their numbers, are spotted. They decide to do the smart thing and get the fuck out of there. And, of course, the Wargs give chase. [2 regiments of basically heavy I horsemen]
[1 vs 1]Both are slow in their escape, neither parties gaining or loosing any ground. The scouts, knowing this environment, give the Wargs the slip quite a few times, but are soon found again.

[3 vs 2] Finally, the scouts light a massive field fire in the abandoned area, and the Wargs lose the trail, shying away from the fires, before turning around and loping back to the village they're resting in.

[6-1] A number of villagers are found, huddled in a large storage warehouse in the Warg-infested lands. They've apparently took refuge here while the lumbermen of the villages tried to put a fight against the Wargs.

[1] As the scouts report back, and you've barely got settled in the village you were resting in for the time, the howling starts far in the north.

What sounds like hundreds, if not thousands of the beasts begin to howl, the sound reverberating across the valley, gliding down with the stream. It tapers off, until only one, exceptionally loud Warg is howling. It gets louder, and louder, until it finally ceases.

Pay the man his due. Head north to the next village. Stay for a few days and record what anything that comes my way. If no one comes to visit me for suspicious behaviour, head to the capitol.
[4+1-1] He frowns, before nodding, handing over some change. "Well sorry. Nocte is...isn't well. I'd suggest not going there much more. Dark rumors abound in that nation, and the people have always been robbers and raiders."
[3+1] "Take care now. That medallion will serve you for the rest of your life, I do believe."

[3+1] The people at the village welcome you cheerfully enough when they notice the Medallion on your breast, giving you good room and good food for exceptionally cheap prices. Apparently the inn you're staying at is a government supported hostel, and tries to cater mostly to foreigners and emissaries.
[~] You soon become sleepy, however, after eating the food and swiftly pass out in your bed, sinking into the soft furs and sheets.

[6] When you awake the next morning, your gear is far more orderly than usual, and...the coins that you gave the captain are piled neatly beside the pouch that they came from. And, exiting your room, the guard you noticed before looking at you is sitting on a bar-stool, drinking some wine, still clad in her bronze armor. She lifts her hand in a sort of wave, before speaking to you, "Greetings Chronicler. His highness has sent me to escort you to the capital. The king is very interested in you."

Search the village thoroughly. Look for clues, but have the mercenary regiment guard the perimeter of the village while the rest of the party is busy with looking.
Have my men move into position on the perimeter of the village.
[[Ardas is assumed to be leading, therefore, any bonuses given by Adwarf are null and void.]]
Spoiler: Maths (click to show/hide)
[1 vs 5+1]
Rotten, twisted corpses with jutting claws and mouths like bear-traps emerge from the houses as soon as the perimeter of men and steel is formed. They smash against the line hard, sinking their claws and teeth into a few of the troops, before all hell breaks loose. The men seem to go into a berserk rampage, blades sinking into the leathery flesh of the creatures, rending head, limbs, and body parts from the creatures, splattering fetid blood over the ground in massive amounts.

[6]When the commanders finally get control of their men once more, the Ghouls are reduced to corpses and finely minced parts, A few claws still twitch, but they cease after a while, and silence reigns. A few men have to be restrained from rushing into the woods to attempt to hunt down and kill the others. And those that are still sane demand to hunt down the rest and burn down the forest, the village, and anything else corrupted by these beast's touch.

"The choice is yours."
[3][1][5][6]+1-1
The first priest offers half a ducat to the venture, stating that his priests don't get very man donations as of late. The second offers the same excuse, but still demands to be given a rank in the new Inquisition, regardless, stating that someone of his stature is needed to help fight the demons. The third offers his bodyguard(a light regiment of temple devout). The fourth, and final priest, the spokesman, offers to donate a ducat, a regiment, and supply another ducat's worth of cash in winter, provided the Inquisitions has results by then.

Jarod bowed his head humbly.

"I thank you for your generosity, Brothers."

He turned towards the archpriest who had demanded a position, and this time his voice was slightly harder, though not to the point where it would offend.

"It is not within my power to make a new Lord Inquisitor, Brother. However, you are a priest of the Third, and I could use good men fighting with me; still, you would have to be my lieutenant. I am not certain it is fitting for an archpriest to serve under a mere priest, even if he possesses a high secular rank. However, if that does not bother you, you are welcome amongst us. I intend to travel north at first and take care of the threat upon our northern borders, as it is useless to go hunting mages right away while we have no place to house them besides dungeons, which might... Alienate them further than is necessary."

-------------------------

After the meeting

Jarod takes all the troops he currently has under his command (One Heavy I / Ambusher regiment, two standard regiments) north to the Duchy of Blackberry. He attempts to do so in the best possible time.

Araline put a hand to her chin, thinking...always thinking...

Fire.

Action: Battle orders are thus-the scouts mass piles of hay, grain and whatever else can be burned are stacked in a ring around the town-this and most of the buildings are all soaked in lantern oil, gathered from our entire army and looted from the town. Junk barricades are also constructed and doused. This flammable defensive ring is placed so in a broken pattern, with the only one thin side being left open-the path that leads to our main army.

The remaining heavies and archer unit path into the hills beforehand, constructing temporary fortifications and spike pits if there's time-leaving removable planks for our scouts to run over, which are taken by the retreating units.

Any able (loosely applied term) civilians are forced to help with these constructions-by sword if absolutely necessary-and given weapons and armor if they're brave enough to fight.

When the Wargs approach, the hill forces keep quiet-while the scouts in the village generally make riot, bang shields, sing bar songs, and egg the beasts on if they haven't attacked already.

Thus, we try to draw the beasts into the village and trap the wargs in a ring of fire using torches or flaming arrows, finally using our defensive position to take out any survivors in defense. Any fields around the village that can be more easily burned are also done so. The Scouts need to avoid combat as much as possible, once they get the wargs in and the fires lit, they retreat quickly-or die where they fall.

No matter what happens with the above and after, we defend those hills until either all the wolves are dead or we are.

In the case the largest wolf is spotted, Araline personally commands a group of a dozen or so or her best hand-picked archers to try and snipe it dead.

This was bloody, but disgusting. The rotten, shambling masses of flesh were ct down just like dead meat would be chopped by a butcher. But his men were zealous and wanted to rush ahead. He was with them on it.

"Find some tools, pitchforks, and put all the dead in one pile. Don't forget to douse everything with oil. We are burning this place down."

After suitable commands were given out, Valerian decided to speak to his two mercenaries.
"I don't know what they are or where did they came from, but the area must be teeming with them. I don't want unnecessary casualties so I will send scouts ahead. Hrosskel, you will take them with you and will search the forests for any clues while we will make sure that this place is cleansed."

Ramus is to stay on guard duty while the troops burn the corpses and and we camp in the village for the night. In the morning Hrosskel and a group of scouts are ot go into the forests and find out more about the monsters we encountered and to return at first sign of trouble.

"Yes sir" Hrosskel raised his mace, covered with...Aspects know what, and went to go sleep near the appointed scouts. He was somewhat excited to get this responsibility so quickly, but wasn't particularly surprised.

I did a good job leading some of his troops LAST time...

As he lay on the bare ground, his head resting on his coat, his eyes flashed back to the horrors he had just slain. It all seemed a blur, maces crashing through heads, and yet, the moment he paused in the fighting, he looked at one long enough for its face to be burned in his mind.

Every time he closed his eyes, it was there.

Hrosskel will lead the scouts into the woods in order to discover more about the monsters the group just fought.

"Blah. Blah. Blah"
[1] The priest turns scarlet with apparently barely suppressed anger, he spits out the words with harsh emphasis, "Me? Serve under the likes of a bastard like you? You must be as daft as the King, you fool!"

He pauses, glancing to the other priests, who are looking away, before continuing with his tirade, "Why don't you go and fetch me some wine, serving-son?"

[6] The other priests are staying out of it, turning their eyes towards you and watching you expectantly.

Jarod takes all the troops he currently has under his command (One Heavy I / Ambusher regiment, two standard regiments) north to the Duchy of Blackberry. He attempts to do so in the best possible time.
[1] Somehow you've maneuvered yourself into some swamp land, your heavy troopers getting bogged down in the mucky, marshy land. In the desolate depression of mud and grime, you make camp for the night, and immediately regret it. The next morning, a few of your men are missing.

[5] Tracks, obviously from said men, lead off to a set of limpid, dark pools, and into the forest, before they are lost to sight.
[3-1] The tracks stop in the forest, it seems, and there's nothing there, so the soldiers must have started covering their tracks or circled back, but there's no evidence to support either.

Action.
[6] The orders are carried out to the letter by the people and your soldiers. Large, massive piles of flammable objects are amassed and moved, people even ripping apart their houses to contribute to the piles and barricades around the village. However, someone tells you, quite simply, that this fire will be hot enough to burn down not only the village, but it could spread to the forest, and even the other fields. [1] But the hills are impossible to reinforce in the short time given, the terraces are filled with troops and others, and they hold the high ground, but a fire-ditch is BARELY made, when the Wargs arrive.
[5]The lumbermen and women are some of the first to sign up, followed by burly farmboys and other young men. This motley collection, much like the last regiment of peasants, wield motley tools and weapons, and thick clothing and armor.

[4 vs 6] When the Wargs arrive, and the scouts make merry racket, a number of the Wargs break off to rush into the trap, loping along, grinning bloody grins, before the Alpha Male, the black-furred beast, howls, loudly. The abruptly stop, and a few younger specimens sniff around the piled objects, before, quite abruptly, rushing back towards the rest of the pack.

[2-1] The Black Warg, as your men have taken to calling him, lopes forward into bow-range, and your men open up on him. The arrows impact flesh solidly, being driven deep into his flesh, but...he doesn't seem to care. He plucks a few out with his mouth that are in irritating areas before turning back around, howling loudly, he turns his gaze towards the hill, breaking into a flat run with the rest of his pack.

The stop, just short of bow-range, many flopping down on the plain before the hill and panting, The Black Warg chews at another arrow wound, his maw covered with his own blood as he digs the arrow out and spits it on the ground.

Ramus is to stay on guard duty while the troops burn the corpses and the village and we camp for the night. In the morning Hrosskel and a group of scouts are ot go into the forests and find out more about the monsters we encountered and to return at first sign of trouble.
[4] The bodies burn without incident, followed by the town. Red-hot timbers licked with flames fall inward and collapse into ash. The village isn't even looted of the goods that the evacuees left behind, everything is left to burn. Camp is made somewhat away from the massive inferno, your men resting and watching the fire.

Hrosskel will lead the scouts into the woods in order to discover more about the monsters the group just fought.
[6] You and the scouts walk through the woods, silently, not a single stick cracking under your feet, the pine needles muffling your foot steps. Soon enough, you being to find skeletons, picked clean of flesh and meat, leading to a large stone door, collapsing out from a barrow-under-hill. Massive claw marks mark the stone, as does blood and other skeletons.

[5] A few of the Ghouls lay beside the gate, bellies bloated with corpse meat and carrion. A rotten bit of flesh, so obviously flayed from a human, considering the tattoos and markings on it, hang from the gate like a banner. A long, bloody, serpentine figure is drawn on it.

[2] vs [1] The Ghouls don't hear you, even when you scatter a skeleton's bones to pine needles. They don't notice you even when one of your men sneezes, quite loudly. Unfortunately, you're unable to count how many there are, the majority seeming to be resting within the barrow itself.

Raoul motions for one of the servants to tie a blindfold to the silver knight's head to cover his eyes, before speaking once more.

"If that's the case, I'm glad there's men and women like you willing to actually fight these things. Before you start talking about cowardice and that, please remember who you're talking to. Not hard to look brave if the other person runs away as a natural response. I assume that you'll still be able to see through the blindfold due to... whatever it is that your eyes are doing."
