"Your Highness, His Majesty King Logan sent me here with considerable forces to tackle a problem that was reported in your lands. Apparently wargs started assaulting the villages and there is much fear caused by that. Is there anything I should know or that you want to tell me?"
"Only that we've not seen hide nor hair of these attackers. There are militia groups formed along the frontier, but aside from that there's is nothing for me to say on that topic.

I'd like to stay and chat, but since "Good" King logan seems fit to have me running around, doing all the things his chancellor should be doing...

Hopefully he hasn't gone and pissed off anyone by virture of his personality yet..."

"My lord, I have found an interesting thing while walking to the castle..."
Valerian shows him the arm of the beast he took from the captain.

"This is the beast or beasts we will encounter. We will move up to the borderland get in touch with men on the ground. We have enough forces to dispatch them, but it would be good to get some guides that could tell us more about the terrain and the sightings. I've lived whole my life in Nocte, but I've never seen anything like that... Maybe war kept big beasts out of the country.
Also, I have a former captain of the guard, he was the one who brought that arm. unfortunately he attacked me with some magic, so I took the liberty of capturing him and keeping him in your mansion under guard. i hope that is fine with you my lord, I will need him in the capital."

"Strange, but all things considered I cannot allow you to take him back to the capital. If he is a mage, I will trust none save for the inquisition to take him, and if he is not, I would not let anyone take a man of his competence, not even if Logan demanded that I hand him over to him.

Still, it's odd for him to dispatch the captain of his guard on a mission like this. I still do wonder whom he angered in order to require several diplomats..."

"My lord, he raised his hand on me with use of magic nonetheless. For all intents and purposes he is guilty of assaulting me and it falls to me to take him to capital. I am aware that the Inquisition is busy elsewhere, and the man must be taken care of in one fashion or another until I finish my mission here, which means I will take him with me once i'm done here
As for my reason to be here... I only do as my king commands. I have no insights on the diplomacy of my king."

Valerian carefully observed the man in front of him. Rather staunch in his behaviour... He wondered whether to pursuit further conflict with him or allow the ex-captain to be taken away from him... Valerian was sure of the primacy of his duty. He hoped he could avoid any problems.

"I'll keep him under guard until further notice Valerian. I saw no evidense of any sort magic insofar, and until I have evidence that proves he is a mage, he shall not leave my realm. Understood?

Now, I shall co-operate as best I can in the eradication of the beasts from my lands, and as such I'll order whatever assistance the peasants can provide for you, including trackers and guides. Now, if that Is all, I must prepare for my own journey. Good tidings to you Valerian."

"I will return here once I'm done. thank you for the assistance, my lord."

He was angry. He left the mansion in bad mood, having been denied his own prisoner. But that won't be forgotten.

He returned to his unit.

"Ramus, be on the ready. We move out in the morning, we are also to take locals who saw the beast and some of the local scouts and pathfinders to help us move around. We need every bit of information we can get."

Gather up guides and locals who have any information about the beasts. Move out next morning, using their information to reach the troubled area. Mercenaries go in the vanguard.

Raoul shook his head as Valerian left. He had a shred of respect for the man, as much as he could for a pawn of the king. Still, there was work to be done.

Raoul investigates any rumours about a political incident in the capital, incase Logan insulted a foreign diplomat or two.

Raoul also goes to check on the injured knight, as well as to find out if he's actually a mage.

Somewhere between the capital and the village, two days ago

"So if my estimations are correct, Valerian should be this far into his journey" The mercenary, atop his white stallion, traced a line with his finger of the likely route. "I'm over here, so if he continues on the route he's on, he'll be there, and I can make it there in, what is that, 10 vikas? That's around two days' ride."

Present time (OOC: Likely as Ardas is just about to make camp or just leaving it)

As the army marched, they came upon a horseman, shield in hand, mace in salute, with a cocky grin. Recognizing a familiar face, he spurred his animal into action, taking care not to alert the troops by going too fast towards their commander. "Valerian? Do you recognize me? It's been a few years." He threw off his helmet, allowing unobstructed view of his face and distinctive hair cut. "The only man to volunteer for the levy? Surely a rare little detail like that has kept me in your memory?"

He recognised the man instantly. Only few people in whole of Nocte looked or behaved like the giant who was also the only volunteer in his small levy.
Whle he did not fall off his horse at first, he was greatly surprisedo t see him there. He wassilent for a brief moment before regaining composure.

"By gods, its you! Hah, its been some time, yes. How come you are here? What happened to you during the war? I know you were separated from the rest of my levy back when, I thought you died. What brings you back?"

"Employment, mostly. If I said altruism, I'd be a liar. Simply put, I'd be willing to work for you for free on this...whatever it is your doing, room and board included of course (OOC: Insignificant pennies), in order to build my repute up in this kingdom as a mercenary. I'd give you a list of my accomplishments, but then again, you were there for the most significant. So what do you say?"

Hrosskel smiled like a child who wanted some candy.

"You know you won't regret it."

Araline scowled. Wolves were not men...

She quickly ordered a wall of spear, blade and shield to meet the beasts attack head on, sending her specialist infantry to the wings-hoping to crush the beasts in a vice of iron.

"Archers! Prepare a volley!" She said, swinging her blade.

Action: Form a defense line and prepare for an attack! Try to flank them with a single unit of our tacticians. Also, give a speech to instill courage in quaking hearts

Pick up the arm of the beast for later inspection. Have the ex-captain taken to the mansion and looked after, but sedated with milk of the poppy to prevent him for casting further magic.

Gather up guides and locals who have any information about the beasts. Move out next morning, using their information to reach the troubled area. Mercenaries go in the vanguard.

[6] The first dose nearly kills the man. His breathing slows, his heart begins to flutter and beat irregularly, and he grows pale, skin starting to go clammy, as with death. [5] He barely survives it, coming out of it after a while. However, the medic quickly prohibits anymore of such things, stating his weakened state is well...too weak to handle such a thing, strange enough. They say it's very rare for such a thing to happen.

[6] You find one man all too happy to escort you into the troubled areas and a walk through a number of fields and over several hills and grading slopes, you arrive at the village the Silver Knight was referring to. Or you hope he was referring to. The man who's leading you is nearly silent, speaking in a hoarse voice every now and then.

When he gets to the village, he just vanishes. Slipping away into the night.

The village itself is devoid of life, the people looking to have left in a hurry, but there's no obvious signs of bloodletting or a massacre here, just empty silence.

"...I doubt he had any idea of just how dangerous a mage truly was. I am not sure he has even now..."

Jarod shook his head as he spoke.

"...The King wants the mages taken alive, and trained."
[6][4][4][3]+1-1
There's a long moment of silence from the priests at your words. They watch you for a long time, then they look to one of their number, the obvious spokesmen of the four. Then they begin to talk rapidly.
"...Quite unheard of, but if they could be converted, and there has always been rumors that magic comes from the Aspects themselves...we could finally learn how they do their tricks..."
"...If the mages are kept heavily contained and only used in times of great emergency...perhaps..."
"...I agree with Samus. I can support containment, but I must protest against using them, surely that makes us worse than mages, and makes them into slaves?"
"It's despicable. But a clever move. A mage is as strong as an army..."

Then the spokesman speaks up. "What is it that you want from us, Brother Jarod?"

Honestly state that I am unaware of such a system and that I wish to know how to acquire one. Ask also when this system was enacted.
[4] The captain of the group mulls over your words, reaching up to itch at his goatee, before nodding. "All right. Generally you get on in the border towns...but you came from Nocte right? What's the purpose of your visit in Dru?"
[6] "And as for when the system was enacted, well, it was when the Red King took over. Said it made it harder for spies and thieves and thugs to enter the nation. Normally we'd have grabbed you before you got this far into our nation and made you go get one, but recent...things...have been coming out of the forest to hunt and kill our people, and the border isn't very tame."
One of the soldiers is eyeing you suspiciously, but stays silent as the captain blabs. She itches her face and looks away the moment you notice.

Raoul investigates any rumours about a political incident in the capital, incase Logan insulted a foreign diplomat or two.
Raoul also goes to check on the injured knight, as well as to find out if he's actually a mage.

[3] You here nothing about Logan insulting anybody. However, a diplomat from Amius apparently left the same day after meeting the king. Rumors say the meeting didn't go well, but no conrete evidence is found of that.

[5-2] The man is conscious, he's pale, wane, heavily bandaged, but awake for the time being. He's sitting in the bed, reading a small book. The leather of its front is pocked with marks and scratches, as well as things you guess would be bloodstains. The front has a small symbol, in silver-colored ink, of the Three Aspect's Religion. He notices you, and makes to rise, before slumping back into the bed."Pardon if I don't bow."

Speech, battle, etc. Handled on freenode.
Action: Form a defense line and prepare for an attack! Try to flank them with a single unit of our tacticians. Also, give a speech to instill courage in quaking hearts
Spoiler: Maths (click to show/hide)
[4] vs [3]
The peasants take the brunt of the Warg's onslaught, being scythed done in the dozens. Blood sprays everywhere, as do organs and other fleshy tissues. Few beasts are bought down in the start, but the  heavy units smash into the Warg's flanks, sometimes literally, bringing many down under cold iron.

Spoiler: Maths (click to show/hide)
[2] vs [2]
The Wargs turn on the heavy unit, ripping and tearing through a number of men, but many lay dead on the field of battle, and volleys of arrows and iron turn the tide. The scout unit, in a brave moment, draw the attention of the Wargs, just enough for the heavy unit to pull itself back together and attack once more.
Very few loses are recorded among the scouting regiment, luckily, but the heavy regiment is brought down to half its strength

Spoiler: Damaged and Dead Units (click to show/hide)

[2]d worth of pelts are gathered from the beasts. The dead are buried or burned on fires, or, if named, sent back to their loved ones (in chunks, sometimes as the case may be).

[6] Your pre-battle speech rallies your men and women to arms, and after the battle is over and won. They express their desire to press on is quite nagging.
[5+1]There's gusto within the camp, and many people, while saddened by the loss of their friends and family, boast about fighting Wargs and winning. Many a bittersweet tale is told, and your regiments chat and intermingle long through out the night.

King's informant. Smart, but still not quick enough.

He wrote down the captain's knowledge of the pass-system as well as these monster raids.

"Same thing as here, sir. Economical statistics and acquiring data on the kingdom's nobility...I am very interested in having interviews with them, actually. I'm actually hoping to meet the king myself, if such a thing were allowable. Unlikely, though."

He glanced at the 'guardswoman' before continuing.

"Now, before I go off and record the rest of this country, I'd like to know if I explicitly need to travel all the way back to the border or if I could just get one here...I'd rather not be exposed to the beasts along the borders."

Question the captain if I could just acquire a pass here.

"Hey, you're alive and recovering, that's all I want from you at this point. Still, the circumstances around that incident are strange to say the least. Considering that you had a torn-off arm with you, and that Valerian said that you had used magic and assaulted him. It's odd that all this had happen, and I do not believe you to be a mage, though that could explain how you managed to be so efficient at organizing the guard.

But, as an offer of gratitiute, I can offer you protection while you are still within these walls, and I won't let you be taken back to the capital unless the inquisition gets involved."

Aralines voice echoed out over the field-commanding, yet enticing-demanding..yet complying. It was the same voice that had melted the hearts of a dozen men, the voice that Logan likely found so beguiling, the voice that rang in mens minds as they fought and died and bled and screamed. It never failed to have an effect.

She had then tossed the peasants in the front line, with no second thought. Expendable assets were meant to be...well, expended. Any of them who managed to survive would find a place in her regiments.

Later that night...

Araline was in a good mood-she had suffered no wound beyond a nagging headache caused by drinking a bit too much 'victory' wine, and the laughter and bravado of the troops was sort of please in it's own way. She was now in her tent, laying stomach down on bed, writing with a soft quill pen.

She was employing a communique back to the capital...

Quote from: Communication
Good King Logan

We have met the enemy-initial engagement with Wargs beasts in large pack numbers. Battle goes well, enemy utterly destroyed with few appreciable losses. Men express strong desire to move on and continue the hunt, and I will do so. High spirits and good morale, supplies good, no need of reinforcements at this time.

Many valuable pelts recovered-furriers will be receiving much business soon. Will be sending some back to offset cost of your loan.

I would request the pure white one-I believe the Alpha Warg of the pack-fashioned into a fine riding cloak of my own body specifications, of which I am sure you are intimate with by now.

Your loyal Hand, Duchesse Araline

Action: Send a letter back to the capital informing progress, along with 1d worth of pelts in caravan.
Starting the next morning, scouts begin fanning out looking for more Warg forces for our army to engage, and gathering up lost or injured townsfolk. If battle is not pressing, the injured unit is order to rest in whatever lodging we secure.

Fortify and resupply damaged local towns with our 2d worth of aid money once they are secure, reinforcing their defenses if needed.
