Alternate History Thread
« on: March 09, 2013, 02:29:36 pm »

So, I love Alternate History. Very, very much. It is probably one of my favorite genres of writing, actually. Unfortunately, there is a lot of terrible alternate history and thus this thread has come to be. Anything related to Alternate History, What If discussions, and recommendations are all welcome.

I was driven to create this thread by a very excellent story I read recently, The Anglo/American-Nazi War, which is probably the most believable and interesting Axis "victory" timeline I've ever read. It goes a little crazy in the epilogue, but the story itself is awesome.

Me and my dad had a conversation about AH timelines yesterday. Basic ones like the Islamic nations discovering america first, or the USA never joining WWI.

The one that surprised me the most was one from my dad, What if Abraham killed his son and the tribe of Israel never came about?

I'd probably love to get into AH dot com, it's just all the shitty timelines have turned me off it in the past.

The alternate history question that always kept me wondering...

What if the art academy actually accepted Hitler instead of rejecting him twice in his youth? :P

He might still have gone into politics. And even if not, the chaos at the time would have been likely to have led to another fascist (or communist etc.) leader taking over Germany.

Yes, the was groomed into the position by people with an agenda. They would have found a similar pawn sooner or later.

Probably a Fascist. Given the Red Specter that was all but forgotten till the Cold war, and the fear in germany of it, combined with the radical right-wing Freikorps having essentially total control over the war with the Communists, and the weakness of the Communist Party in germany, there was really no doubt. They indulged the Far-right to guard against the left.

If I were to ever make vidya games, at some point I'd like to diddle around with one where the Cuban missile crisis goes slightly differently, resulting in the USSR taking West Berlin. By the 1980s there could be a West German movement to reunify Germany resulting in the expulsion of NATO and the invasion of East Germany, and bam, now I've got a semi-reasonable setting for a nuclear apocalypse game with all the synth and '80sness I want.

Find an excuse to kick it back a decade and you'd have a built in title. Nuclear Disco Inferno.

I love the 1632 series. Though I'm currently kinda stuck at a point in the timeline in my reading of it because of my difficulties getting myself interested in a certain book in the series.

There's actually (at least one) a book about that. Now, if I can find it again.

What if Scotland's American colony never failed?

...Great Scotland and the Scottish Empire?

Probably just get knocked out of North America like the Dutch, Swedes and eventually French.

I think the vikings used to have a Northern-Canadian Colony of Hundred, who weren't asses to the local natives. They eventually died out or left, what would happen if they were sustainable?

They called them "skraelings," Viking first contact with them involved killing eight of them and sparked a war between the natives and the vikings.
