problems with me dwarfies
« on: March 09, 2013, 08:51:30 am »

Ello peeps!

well, after now 2 attempted fortresses, i'm kinda hittin a stump here

first off, I'm using LNP and UF plant overhaul

I modded so that the children need to be age 6 to become adults and only dwarf caravans will show up.

I'm currently having 2 problems.  one, my dwarf babies(I believe coming from migrant waves, but could be both) are not drinking alchol(and I have tons of it and it's easily accessible and not restricted)

the other problem I have my dwarf pop cap set at 30.  and both times this goes way beyond what I set my cap to(first fort had like 60+ dwarvies b4 the fun tantrum spiral ended that fort and last fort had over 47 b4 the fun tantrum spiral hit.

the first problem is what is really killing me.  I have buckets, but my 1st loc. had no water source, the second only had it half a year.

any idea folks?

and thank you for any help your able to give :)

pop_cap
bug report with lot of things:
http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=2922

basically, some points to think of FIRST
1: it's not a hard cap
2: it is periodically checked, not continuously
3: the periodical check can be cancelled, resulting in no status change

1 and 2:
you get 3 migrant waves a year and after that, someone (caravan+liaison) comes to check if there is still space, after which you either get 3 more waves or nothing. If you have 48 dwarves, the cap is at 50, they won't send 2 dwarves, they send 3 waves of many dwarves, dependent in part on your wealth

3: if for some reason the caravan gets destroyed (even partly), or the liaison (possibly) bites the dust, their report isn't finished and migration continues as before. If you get your king before migration has stopped, it will continue too as you get no liaison anymore (or something like it)

Quote from: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Migrants
To reiterate, the population cap is not a hard limit on the number of dwarves in your fortress; It is a soft cap on immigration that only is checked when a liaison successfully reports back to your home civ. If a player is as little as 1 dwarf under their population cap when the liaison leaves, they will be eligible for a full year of normal immigration. As such, it is recommended that players set their population cap at 20-30 dwarves below the number of dwarves they actually want in their fort.

There is an open bug where it seems that for some people POPULATION_CAP doesn't work at all.VerifyBug:2922

babies should be getting sustenance as long as their mother is near (not sure though, but I never had trouble with having no water). If they're dieing it is most likely because something happened to seperate them from their mother. The mother being dismembered by goblins counts as seperated. Dwarves don't do adoption, if your mother dies you're on your own and you better grow up to child status fast, or die. Babies otherwise don't drink alcohol, but the "hasn't had a drink forever" thought can be ignored

That's what usually happens, but this time, I dunno.  as I haven't had any deaths but the babies.  gonna make a new fortress and if it does it, i'll upload the save file.  mayby that can get us closer to what/if i'm doing wrong

Thank you again Garath for the reply.

In the past I've had very few problems with the population cap, but in the last couple of games it's been completely broken for me.  Fortunately, there's a script in DFHack that fixes this.  It's been working very well for me so far.  If you're not using DFHack I'd wholeheartedly recommend it, and not just for this fix.

Run this after every migrant wave to ensure your population cap is not exceeded. The issue with the cap is that it is compared to the population number reported by the last caravan, so once it drops below the cap, migrants continue to come until that number is updated again.

Not true - if your population cap is 50 and the last caravan observed a population of 48 (and successfully made it back to the Mountainhomes), then all subsequent migrant waves will consist of 2 dwarves each until the next Dwarven caravan visits and confirms that you're at (or above) the population cap.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Cool, never noticed that and it isn't said on the wiki as such I think. Worth knowing, thanks
