Help me build a Dwarf Fortress pantheon
« on: March 08, 2013, 11:58:15 am »

As the title suggests I am having trouble coming up with Dwarven gods for a homebrew RPG of mine. I have a sketch of what I want and how the history of the deities should roll out, but quite frankly, I am short on ideas.

The main pointers of this project was to separate, just like in the tolkien mythos, gods from mortals in a unique way. For that reason I created 3 different types of divine entities that can be worshiped and represent a part of this new setting that's under construction.
The first, like the Valar, are all powerful spiritual creatures: they are the Verbs, the Overgods, lords of everything and of themselves. The second type, like the Mayar, are otherworldly spirits, infinitely wise and immortal, but much weaker than the first and often under their rule. The last ones are the Paragons, creatures that ascended to godhood in different ways or lesser entities that represent some aspects of the world.

Here there is the list of some gods I made up while brainstorming earlier today:

Armok, the Overgod, Slaver of All, God of Blood
Jotun, Father of Aquifers, Lord of Ice, Enemy of Armok
-
The Forgotten One, Lurker in the Darkness, Mother of Monsters
The Mountain King, Gold Lord, Dwarfather
The Earth, Engraved Mother, Unbending Lady
The Carp God, Devourer of Souls, Deep Dweller
-
Urist, the Firstborn, Goddess of Greed, Daughter of the Mountain King, Lady Labor
Tholtig Momuzidek, Goddess of Duty, The Martyr Queen, Lady Hate
Cacame Awemedinade, God of Fury, Elven King of the Dwarves, Lord Wrath
Obok, God of Unspeakable Deeds, The Monstrous, Lord Vile
Trame, God of Egotism, The Noble God, Selfish Lord
Burialgears, God of Abandonment, The Wandering Swordsmen, Beardless Lord
Dodok Astlumash, Goddess of Doom, Forgetful Child, Lost Lady

Things go kinda like this: The lesser ones are heroes and figures of legend. Cacame representing fury and rage, Trame representing nobles (and all the bad baggage that comes with it), Tholtig represent stubbornness and duty, Urist as the first dwarf. It's good, it's creative, but not nearly enough.

Engraved on the forums is an image of Cacame and dwarves. The dwarves are surrounding Cacame.

I need more gods, legendary engravers of Bay12! Any help will be highly valuable. Thank you all.

Very nice so far.  I like "The Earth, Engraved Mother" :D

I think you could have Mayar related to some other key aspects of dwarven life, like Brewing, Smithing, and Trade.  Of course avatars related to the biome (Rivers, Forests) of the other main races.

other Paragons:  The key Dwarf from some legendary fortress with impressive engineering feats, like power reactors and aquifer-stacks.

Many thanks, Kaptin Smakemupagus :D
I had some more related to other projects in the hall of legends, but so far I am keeping it to the bare bone. Want to see what people comes up with. Kind of what makes each and everyone's dwarf fortress unique in a way that you would give praise to it, or fear it, or loath it, etc. Any aspects of DF, characters deified or creatures of myth that make up the setting for this game has a place in that pantheon, I guess.

Any suggestions and opinions are welcome, as always.

Anyone remember Kurtalmak, the moderator of the old Armok 1 forums, God of Kobolds, the Shapeshifter?

And then there was the Sole Survivor of Boatmurdered... I recall somewhere being a decent portrait of her, Queen of Bones, or something.

Thank you Kumquat, will take those in consideration.
And good call Boea. Have to search those legends up!
I also forgot the Carp God, Devourer of Souls!

Will be updating the list pretty soon.

EDIT: Kumquat, I can't find any legends about Obok or Deebus, can you link me somewhere or tell me their tales?

Deebus

About Obok... you won't find his story in this forum. There is a good reason why he is the god of unspeakable deeds.

I wonder if the game has become odd.

Obok, the Meatgod, progenitor of the Original Incident.

We don't talk about him anymore.

Pemmican is pretty incredibly durable. Corn and rice also lust forever without refrigeration.
Ah yes, the insatiable lust of corn and rice, clearly two of the most erotic foods.

Well, I can hardly make up legends and tales about a god I know nothing about, now. Can I?
It's pretty FUNNY that the Bay12 forums talk so excitedly about "child care", torture and other common grade !!FUN!! and then draw the line with Obok. What did he do, raped his own mother's rotting corpse to sire the anti-christ?

He does those things like an ordinary man would smoke a cigarette.

That's interesting, he is the cthulhian equivalent of Hobbe's Leviathan. I think there can be a god based on that.

Ok, guys, what else you got me? I am drawing and writing them down, btw, but it's not nearly close to conclusion (only a bunch of vague sketches). I will be updating the main post with a picture soon.

Well, since you're still looking:

Mörul Cattenmat, God of Artisans and Warriors, The Joker, Lord Improvement
Ironblood, God of Leadership, The Captain, Lord Might

and how could we forget
The Toady One, God of Rants and Laughter, The Great
maybe he could be the Tom Bombadil of this pantheon?
