AOEFE is okay, a bunch of new maps and the civs have a few extra techs.  Also the few new civs aren't terribly OP and are pretty balanced.  The AI is vamped up to be aggressive.  But hey it is free right?  What do you have to lose?  You can still switch back and forth from Conquerors and Forgotten Empires easily.

when brotato gets me friended I shall send him the last copy, already sent the first one.  sorry aklyon.

also, for some reason it took it two hours to download the 1 gig file.  also it has a lot of mods for it already.

Part of the reason I got this was due to my CDs being scratched beyond use, being in this house since I was young was not good on it.

And it turns out that it runs poorly on this computer... hopfully a patch comes out soon to fix this.

Yay, Steam is working for me now! Alright, sent an invite to the only bluejello to come up under my search.  Let's hope it's the right one.

EDIT: You're the one with the Canada flag, right?

OK, I have to reload the save.
There was a bit of a problem regarding flashfreezing, a ballistae, and a barrel of dwarven ale. Gonna fix it up.

For those playing the old Age of Empires 2 + Conqueror expansion (i have no idea if this is compatible with the "HD" release), the amazing "Userpatch V1.2" has been released a bit more than 1 week ago.

Information about it :

Download here :

The Age of Chivalry : Hegemony mod has released a new version yesterday that incorporate the Userpatch.
Similarly to Forgotten Empire it does not replace files so you can still play old unmodded AOE2

I don't do Steam so I'll probably skip this one, but boy that nostalgia just hit me hard. The amount of hours I must have sunk into this game...

So, favorite civilizations/tactics? I was always a late game player myself, enjoying the slow buildup of forces. Loved the Koreans in Conquerors. +2 villager LoS, free tower upgrades, and a devastating unique unit. The great part about Korean War Wagons was that it was a siege style unit that could be healed by priests. I'd usually have teams of 10 wagons and 2 priests steamrolling across the map by the end. Bonus too was that wagons counted as archery units when garrisoned in a castle, adding additional arrows to attack.

brotato, I got your invite so you got the correct bluejello.  gift sent.

I too was a late game player, getting a slow buildup to a massive army then using it to destroy the enemy.  mainly played against AI though, so how I did it may not work vs real people

I've been replaying AOE2 (not the HD version) for several days using the Userpatch and Age of Chivalry mod and i'm really having lots of fun in skirmish.

The AI is really much stronger than it was originally, more challenge, more tension , bigger battles, lots of fun.

I don't know if AOE2HD comes with improved AI or if it's the same weak one as in the original AOE2, but if it is still the old AI, (and if mods like these works on the AOE2HD) get the Userpatch or Age of Chivalry (that comes with the userpatch integrated) if you intend to play AI skirmishes, it's -much- better and fun than with the pushover default AI.

Maybe I'm just a lot worse at AoE II than when I was a kid, but I'm having decent difficulty on just the standard setting.  When I was a kid I could beat out several hard AI at the same time, so take that as you will.

I used to think that champions were key to victory, but what I've seen more frequently is, since food and wood are soooo easy to get, it's best to make 200 skirmishers, 200 pikemen, and 100 villagers... and, of course, 10 or so of each factory. Then just set the output point to be the enemy base and que up 15 units each every few minutes.

This is, of course, essentially the same strategy as the great generals of history.

Wouldn't you need mods to get past the 200 pop limit?

Wish I could buy it. Even if it was Summer and there were sales going on, my money is negative 20 in the bank...oh well.

I remember having some epic multiplayer battles though in AoE2. Some of my best strategy memories come from AoE2.

One map (it was 2vs2, me against another player...both our team mates ended up leaving right at the start of the game)...I was badly losing. But I had a hidden base, deep in a forest...I used trebuchets to make a hidden path going through. I then opened up a path to the enemy, and attacked him full force. He did find my base toward the end, but it was too late as he had no military protecting his city.

Another map was rather epic. It was...3 vs 3 I believe...our team built the great wall stretching from one side of the map to the other. Though that strategy didn't work, since the other team broke through really easily. In the end, it was just me left and I lost rather quickly. But it was the great wall :P a bad strategy though lol...

as far as I know, AI is the same, but you should be able to download new ones in the steam workshop.

Also, I always tried to get villagers to chop wood down into a secret base, or a second path into the enemy (AI) base.  I remember trying to make a great wall several times,  and one time I had a secret base with several gates to it, surrounded by trees.
