One thing that always bugged me about the AI is that either they always ganged up on the lowest ranking civ or that they picked one player to harass all game. I cant recall which, but it kind of forced you to limit your booming or else you'll have 5-6 un-allied AIs knocking on your door. It's kinda realistic, but because it ignores all the other factors that go into warring (will this help me, are they remotely close to me, will I have a chance against his defenses) it ends up being quite silly. I don't want to the Koreans on the other side of the map trying to swing at me because I have 5 less archers than the other guys.

Of course, this did lead to the classic "sixteen thousand corpses at my walls" type situations. Lategame battles with multiple civilizations duking it out usually carpeted the terrain with bodies, which I always thought was awesome. It was also one of the few games to have AI actually build (mostly) logical walls at chokepoints, which was really cool.

There were a bunch of custom AI to provide more challenge to the player that found the stock AI too easy after a while.
I had some good time with "AllianceThundaEmpire" back in the day :
http://aok.heavengames.com/blacksmith/showfile.php?fileid=4256

I can't say if it is the best amongst the bunch of custom AI available, but it's the one i used to play a lot with. I remember it wasn't building walls, dedicacing its wood and stone economy to destroy you instead ;)

There was a website dedicaced to AI tournaments with AOE2 with people creating AI (cheating AI or not) and fighting other productions.
http://forums.aiscripters.com/

But it was a long time ago, no idea if it's still active (as now it seems you need to register to see their board)

I have not yet tried the fan expansion "Forgotten Empire" mentionned in the thread, anyone played with it ? how is the AI in that expansion ?

OK, I have to reload the save.
There was a bit of a problem regarding flashfreezing, a ballistae, and a barrel of dwarven ale. Gonna fix it up.

for a game thats more than 14 years old that works on modern machines and rebuilt on a new networking platform, the price is fricking worth it especially if i can still get the same game i loved back then and bringing new players. Granted i hoped that i could get more out of it say a combo with a HD version of the first game but im glad with this one.

This.

Bringing older, good games into the modern age is worth 20 bucks for me. I don't even know for sure if I ever purchased Age of Empires II in the first place. As soon as I saw that this game had an improved multiplayer lobby I picked it up.

Well, it's as fun as I remember, and it doesn't hurt my eyes anymore, so great. I've done the tutorial (William Wallace !), and a couple of random game. I'm going to do a bit the campaigns, and also some multi games with friends, that's gonna be fun.

I'll hunt down my friends and give you news Brotato, but probably not before a few days.

Do the old cheats work? Not in multiplayer of course.
Because a monster truck out of nowhere was always pretty funny in the middle of all the AoE units.

personally, I lost my old CD. So I am going to buy this... I have wanted to play so many times in the past years.

edit: although it seems many people are having problems, with it not starting, crashing or being laggy on multiplayer. has any of you played it?

Yup, no issue for me.

I've gotta say, aside from the water, I don't see how this is HD.
Not a lot of stuff has been reworked. From what I've seen, fire, cliffs, rocks, and water, and probably a couple extra stuff. But there's already some mods in the workshop for textures. It fits better for bigger screens than the old. At low res on a decent screen, the old sometimes was awful, I don't have it installed anymore, but yea.

I've not tested, but there's the car in the trailer  :D

I would imagine that the cheats are still in.  and now to start the download... this will take longer than it should.
Steam workshop and a real multiplayer option is two very strong points in its favor to me.

I have a couple extra that I am willing to part with,  steam ID is bluejello42

For those playing the old Age of Empires 2 + Conqueror expansion (i have no idea if this is compatible with the "HD" release), the amazing "Userpatch V1.2" has been released a bit more than 1 week ago.

Information about it :

I hate Steam so much sometimes.  Half the time I try and connect to my profile or add a friend it says that it cannot connect to server or that I must be offline.

EDIT: I want a copy bluejello, I just am having trouble adding you.

I'd be interested as well, but I see two people already asked for them.
