Ooooooooooh.

So if you can somehow keep your villagers alive while you build that thing... you'd have to be asleep to not notice a bunch of villagers building a TC right next to yours, though. I imagine you don't go for it straight up, but rather after getting a bunch of villagers yourself to speed up the process / provide human shields / actually have time to find out where the enemy actually is?

I wonder if they fixed it so it can play windowed as well, optionally. That was always a thorn in my side about that and SW:GB. I had to find a special patch to AOE2 to enable a windowed and HD mode.

Nice to see new players finally seeing what the big deal was about this game.

Beware, for I foresee a bunch of (probably new) AOE Monk-based memes coming over the horizon.

You use your scout to harass his villagers, if he retreats to TC he's losing out on resources so he has to try and kill the scout with the villagers. You draw them away a bit and then plop down your town centre as close to his as you can (and covering his stone preferably) while still keeping your villagers that are building it out of range of his TC. It goes up pretty fast when you have 7-8 villagers building it.

It's too expensive for such a old game
The power of nostalgia, when combined with steam workshop support and the currently not-exactly-sprawling RTS genre (what is there to play in it recently besides SCII: WOL/HOTS or older games?) can be a powerful thing.

At that matter, Age of Mythology? I've heard a lot of people say it was superior to the AOE series.

It's been a while since I've played either, but the core mechanics are more or less the same between AoEII and AoM. AoM adds some new stuff in the mix, for example instead of always going from Dark Age to Feudal Age, you go from Minor God X to Minor God Y or Z, adding a little mid-game tactical depth to decision making, and receive god specific spells, units and buildings. While AoM probably had some general gameplay tweaks and improvements on account of being the newer game, I enjoyed both of them for the slightly different setting. AoM was pretty silly now that I think about, but it was fun charging an egyptian battle line with a horde of minotaurs led by Heracles. In addition to the sword>spear>horse>bow rock-paper-scissors dynamic, AoM added a hero>mythic>mundane dynamic to go along with it.

So... not superior but certainly worth the ~10 eurobucks it'll probably cost you if you buy it.

AoM: Fun. But 'only' four factions, although those are fundamentally different.

The entire mainline Age Of series is a goldmine. End of discussion.

AoK is legend. AoM is possibly even better due to more tactical choices and very cool powers and mythical creatures.

Norse ftw, because earning favor via fighting is manly. You also don't need to send highly squishy villagers to build stuff as well.

also you should maybe play aoe 1, just to see how it's hilariously unwieldy and the pathfinding is dubious. It was my first RTS with Tiberium Dawn's demo.

AoK is legend.
Ah, yeah, I remember I used to say AOK instead of AOE too.

My dad still plays AoE II- probably his favorite game ever.  I sure had a blast playing it as well.

I like AoEIII- Ottomans were nice because I hate remembering to build villagers.

I'd rather have Age of Mythology HD.

I'd rather have Age of Mythology HD.
AOM was already in HD, it was 3D  :P !

Also, are some people interested by buying 4pack ? I might have some friends interested, and I'd probably have 1 or 2 extras (or 3).

The price is just barely not right for me. Given that we're essentially paying for the multiplayer infrastructure (at least, those of us that already own it), 20USD is a bit much, especially when there are good-new-games out there for similar prices. I might get it, I might not.

for a game thats more than 14 years old that works on modern machines and rebuilt on a new networking platform, the price is fricking worth it especially if i can still get the same game i loved back then and bringing new players. Granted i hoped that i could get more out of it say a combo with a HD version of the first game but im glad with this one.
