Age of Empires 2: HD: Electric Wolololoooo: The Coloning.
« on: March 08, 2013, 12:34:06 am »

Hey, so Age of Empires is back. In HD, which apparently means a modern multiplayer lobby and a much better looking water.

The Trailer

Bill Gates aught to pay me for this, but eh. I'm looking forward to it. First Bay12er who calls/PMs me gets a free copy- I bought a four-pack and I have a spare. taken!

Waste of 20$. The Forgotten Empires fan-made expansion includes HD/widescreen support as well as a ton of patching, tweaking, AI overhaul, new content, no-cd, kitchen sink.

They want 20$ for what was done in a fan-made cracked executable patch. It runs 1.0c. No update, no new content.

Play Forgotten Empires instead for free. Use gameranger if you want a modern lobby.

OK, I won't any more than this:
Cheap moneygrab.

On the other hand: new player influx! The old crowd was kind of impenetrable, either private friend games or nostalgic pro-players looking to crush anyone willing to play with them.

Now if they could just do this with StarWars Galactic Battlegrounds all my AOE2 dreams would be fulfilled.

AoE2 doesn't need any improvements anyway, all it needs is a good matchmaking service and Steam should do that job just fine.

Does this support Win7 natively? If yes, I might shell out for this when it's down 75%.

Also AoE's balance is basically not perfect. Archer, Swordsman and Knight (sorta) lines getting ignored for Spearmen, Skirmishers and Light Cavalry for one. Ten minutes of economy before anything else happens. Etc. Still, this was one of my first games and you can bet I'm still massively enjoying it.

Lolwut? Swordsmen line is the backbone of virtually every AoK army, and plenty of civs spam archers and knights too. Counter units may be cheaper, but when you hit the population limit they just aren't good enough to be the main force.

Ten minutes of economy before anything else happens.

$20 is alot of money for a game I already own with a few patches. The patches are a good thing, dont get me wrong. It just seems too expensive...

Ten minutes of economy before anything else happens.

Are you suggesting that ten minutes is a long time?

Ten minutes with three people gathering and tributing to a fourth is a hell of a lot of units.

I'll probably grab this, seeing as I don't have AoE2 anyway.

Processor:1.2GHZ CPU
Memory:1 GB RAM
Graphics:Direct X 9.0c Capable GPU
DirectX®:9.0c
Hard Drive:2 GB HD space

probably some small changes to the exe to make it run but i would say yes. I can't believe you guys are complaining about the price though. Re-released game with upgraded graphics, online infrastructure for 20 bucks? thats a steal for new players hell ill pay for that price especially for the game.

It depends on the game. Compared to League of Legends, it's pretty short.
Compared to other RtS, it's probably middle-of-the-road - depends on whether some person goes for a hardcore rush, or whether there's generally late game tactics. I think AoE III was a bit faster - again, dependant on strategy, but by 8 minutes you should always be in Colonial in that game, for one, and some factions already have their rush assembled and marching. Colony cards work wonders. Compare to AoE II, where you're probably teching Feudal Age at that point but not finished, or just finished and start building Barracks/Shooting Range. (This is hardcore rush timing iirc.)
And, finally, compared to fighting games, it's the time you need for one or two full sets, so, quite slow.

So, in retrospective, I probably -remember- AoEII as a slow game, which it isn't quite. Perhaps it's the sheer number of villagers you tend to have around that led me to that train of thought that AoEII is an economy-focused game. It is, but that's something all RtSes share, and that doesn't make it slow. My bad.

Ten minutes with three people gathering and tributing to a fourth is a hell of a lot of units.
You need a Marketplace to tribute in this game, and you perhaps have one online at 10 minutes. Even so that's 175 wood probably better spent on another Archery Range, and Tributes aren't 100% efficient either.

Re: Prices: 15$ might have been a better price point considering the age of the game. It's a psychologically important price point too, I think - that's just as much as a downloadable title these days. And I'm only picking it up for pocket change because I already have it - if you haven't played this game, you should really get it, because it's awesome. Period.

This was the first game I really played online, through microsofts pioneer onilne service (can't remeber it's name). I lost my disc ages ago, and was always sad. But now, now I am elated! I remeber there was one interesting custom map I used to play, where one person (usually the host) was a neutral party. He had the ability to spawn units, so people could buy stuff off him, or even hire him to help attack other people.
