So what happens when a merchant dies?
« on: March 07, 2013, 11:00:18 pm »

So I'm back into Dwarf Fortress after a year-long hiatus. Anyways, I just got my first caravan, and at first for some reason it said the Trade Depot was inaccessible but the caravan got there fine anyways. The caravan stayed there for a normal amount of time, and started heading back. It was just about to leave the map when the merchant randomly went berserk and started attacking the guards, who just killed him and left. The interesting part is that everything from the caravan has been left on the map, and my dwarfs are happily taking everything into their stockpile.

So is that supposed to happen? When the merchant dies through some reason other than me, is everyone supposed to just leave and I get to keep all of the goods? Because that would be pretty great.

It depends on what merchant died.
If it was a dwarven merchant, then you may get less items in the next caravan and fewer migrants.
If it was an elven or human caravan, however, they will not be amused that their merchant didn't make it back alive and will send a siege if they keep losing their caravans.

Merchants only care about the amount of goods that enter the map vs. the amount of goods that leave it. If the amount going in is greater then the amount coming out, they get unhappy and bring less. If the amount coming out is greater then the amount going in they get happy and bring more. Further merchant deaths also incurs a penalty on this, where they will become unhappy.

So regardless of how you ended up with the goods, the merchants don't care. All they care about is that they made less of a profit and one of their merchants died there.

And normally what will happen if a merchant dies is all the other merchants will pack up and leave. If a wagon or pack animal dies then the goods it would be carrying are left behind as well.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Well that kind of sucks then. At least I won't get sieged, but hopefully I won't need to trade much in this fortress. At least I've got flux stone, so maybe I'll be okay.
