What will I do with my fortress now?
« on: March 07, 2013, 08:31:52 am »

So I'm pretty new to this game, I've played it last year and got the rules, and now I'm learning how to handle military, metal blah blah. So my fortress is around 150,000 and it is... very... very boring. I've mined down to the lowest level (two of my miners got killed with lava), I have platinum, gold, led, tin and copper ores. I occasionally cut wood. I have some cages with one troll and some naked mole dogs. I have a legendary military and a nice supply of food and booze. I have 3 artifacts and I have this torture 'machine' which is basically a bridge that opens to injure the person standing on it. I am also trying to recreate the dwarven 'childcare' but those imbecile children won't even go to their assigned burrow over the hatches. Now it's seriously dull; no invaders or demons have ever tried to attack my fort and my military hasn't even fought unless you count some annoying naked mole dogs. I have really no idea what to do now.

Have you actually found the adamantine and dug through that yet? Because there's no circus without it.

You poor thing. Goblin Christmas doesn't want to come? Provoke the humans, they can be fun too.

Kill the elves. Kill the humans. Make great spire to sacrifice creatures to Armok!

But what about invaders? No invaders even come?

You probably made the mistake of embarking somewhere safe, possibly an island. Invaders won't come if they can't reach the place.  Next time embark on the mainland and somewhere near the edge of the nasties' territory, not right in the heart of dwarfland and certainly not on an island.

Whether you'll get goblins can be checked before you embark - press tab a few times when choosing the location of your embark site.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Things I think you should do:

1. Dig right down into a vein of adamantine.

2. Declare war on anyone who is non-hostile. Become the Mountainhome if you aren't already.

3. Start a more imaginative or extreme megaproject. Some bridge-thing that maims your Dwarves is kind of small change. Make a system that pumps magma all over the surface to roast attacking Goblins, redirect the local river to serve your fort, create a complicated Rube Goldberg style trap that starts with a lever being pulled and ends with half a mountain collapsing on your enemies...the options are only limited by your imagination!

4. If these do not increase your enjoyment of the game, embark somewhere new. Write down things you think would be cool to do that you cannot do in your current fort.

(E.g. I want my next fort to be on a savage coastal biome with flux stone, so I can explore steel-working and capture giant sharks that I can release on invaders :D)

5. If you're still not "challenged" enough, embark on a Terrifying Evil biome with little/no trees, very limited metals, local Necromancer towers and an Aquifer. Then declare war on everyone too ;)

And then suddenly this forgotten beast has shown up. Great right? Except that it's the lamest forgotten beast ever- it doesn't even try to attack me and just chills out around the water.

Forgotten beasts are randomly generated. Some can be kileld by an child. Others can kill 30 elite warriors, simultan.
They're like a luck game. You never know what you'll get.

necromancer towers?
Just go for solid passive reanimation. know that there is essentially no sucessful reclaim attempt in such places.

This is a masterwork ledger.  It contains 3719356 pages on the topic of the precise number and location of stones in Spindlybrooks.  In the text, the dwarves are hauling.

Not feasible in your current fortress, but fortress defense is the way to go if you feel bored. I tell you, with 15+ hostile civs sieging you, you will never run out of visitors

Sounds like a good time to play with minecarts. Or divert a river into one of the caverns. Then again you could abandon while everything's going well and have talented migrants for your new fortress somewhere harder. I recommend a mirthful savana biome and live off hunting.

EDIT: Keas restricted to tropical forests where they belong.  Those evil, EVIL, foul little things.

Edit: The baby murderer became a friend of the fortress, which started a loyalty cascade, and now most of the squad is dead.

The question is not:
What will I do with my fortress now?

There is no 'with'

The question is:
What will I do to my fortress now?
