Star Trek Discussion Thread
« on: March 05, 2013, 09:24:05 pm »

Note: This thread will change topics when I feel a discussion has reached it's conclusion.
Also, on acronyms than will be used.
TOS-The Original Series; Kirk and Spock's Trek
TAS- The Animated Series; Ditto, but intended for kids.
TNG:The Next Generation; Picard and Riker's Trek
DS9- Deep Space Nine; Sisko and Nerys's Trek
VOY- Voyager; Janeway and Chakotay's Trek
ENT- Archer and T'Pol's Trek

Movies will be refered to by number.

Current topic is TOS VS. TNG: Which is better?

And... Debate!

TNG is definitely the better show overall. I feel like there are few people who would contest that.

Most of TOS' appeal is camp and watching Shatner be a ham.

TNG. No question. More detailed plots. I usually don't say this but better graphics. More developed characters.

Overarching plot themes that were coherent:

Q trial of humanity.
Data finding humanity.
Etc etc.

Also, is there a fandom-agreed phrase for the new movie series? Sometimes I want to talk about that too and it's difficult.

The most obvious of the films would simply be something liKHAAAAAAAN!

I'll be honest, I was raised on TOS and similar types of camp. TNG has better plotting and worldbuilding, but I enjoy watching TOS more. Though of course DS9—

We need a POLL.

This may be the only time somebody ever said this seriously and was right about it.

No, not the TOS movies. The 2009/2013 movies.

This is exactly the problem.

Presumably something along the lines of nuTrek 1 and 2. And yes, a poll would be lovely.

The Next Generation. No contest. Pretty much every character that just screams "I am Star Trek" to me is from that one and not The Original Series.

The only problem with The Next Generation was Westly never had a terrible airlock or engineering bay related accident that left just slush.

TNG all the way for me. I was born too late for the original series, but the whole family loved TNG and it's basically my go-to for most things Trek-related.

Same, I am younger than most of you, but TNG just hits the Sci-fi theme right on the head. They sure ended it off with a bang with "All Good Things.." too.

Here is kind of the thing I get when I talk to people who prefer the original series.

If you were running the federation which captain would you chose? And most of them will say Picard. They may like Kirk more, but they still consider Picard as sort of the paragon of what a Federation Captain should be (While Kirk is sort of the rogue).

Which is kinda why I like The Next Generation more and in many ways consider it better.

This IS a starship you could imagine as the flagship for the federation and not a ship of ragtag savants.

Also unlike most people I didn't dislike Wesley and I actually really like Diana Troy. Then again I am very blunt towards what people consider to be an "annoying character", very few characters can ever annoy me.
