We want you to play as a thief, but we don't want to force you to play as a thief.

thanks but no thanks.

Wait did they freeken say that? Did they actually just say that?

Well I see my half-sarcastic pessimism has now somehow come true.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the finger-less gloves Garrett's sporting was, "Dude! You'll leave fingerprints!"

...and then I thought about that for a second. D'oh.

This is one of those times I'm glad all I had of the original thief was that amazing trailer.  I'm protected from knee-jerk OH MY GOD THIS ISN'T THE RAREFIED IDEAL I'VE MADE OF THE GAME FUCK.

I liked the third Thief game and I played a bit of the original long after that original trailer.  I also liked Dishonored, and I'm interested in seeing how this game turns out.

Adam gets a first look at the new Thief:

Quote
If the world-building is consistent and strong, and the game holds true to its intent, which is to present interesting, complex spaces and allow the player to explore them with all of the old tools of the trade, then Thief will undoubtedly delight me, despite any misgivings I maintain about some of the changes in tone. But that ‘if’ is very important. It’s possible to play a game for an hour or two and to seize, or be offered, the wrong end of various sticks, and while I feel much more optimistic about this reboot than I did before seeing it in action, that’s all that has happened. I’ve seen it in action, with members of the development team playing it in a controlled environment. They know that I’ve missed firing water arrows at torches and clubbing guards on the noggin. I’ve missed creeping on carpets and shuddering at the sight of a hard, stone floor. I’ve missed being encouraged to think about a location as a challenge and a possibility, and I reckon Thief just might bring all of those things back to me.

Basically, it seems like it's poised to do all the right things. The engine is built around lighting, architecture and verticality. It's impossible to know what the final product will look like however. About the only thing that bugged Adam supremely was the "Focus" power which is basically bullet time. That said, it was shown less for combat and more for stealing, so, maybe it'll be less of a groan-worthy cliche.

I will have to think long and hard about preordering this one. I can already tell that, short of a 20 minute gameplay video, it will be hard to ascertain what the game is like until it's in your hands. There's simply too many details and necessary components to the formula that has to be right.

Cool. Looks like Dishonoured thoroughly ruined how Thi4f [or whatever the fuck they titled it originally] is going to turn out. I will be pre-disappointed until I get proven wrong by gameplay. But I'll put half my net worth that this will not be the same game as the previous. I see so far: No-accent British guards, matrix cam fighting, climb a thing to reach the one above-ground pathway. Meh.

On the other hand, open city.

Open city doesn't seem like a very big pro for a game like Thief, where what you actually want by definition lies behind closed doors ;)

Trust me when I say the ground work was already there long before Dishonoured came into being. In fact I'd point at Assassin's creed and the game's steady progression into a straight forward action game AND Mass Effect's steady progression into a shooter as the direct cause.

Basically the casualization of the videogame series.

Lets wait until we've at least seen the game in action before condemning it.

Ohh no, I am not saying the game is bad... I am just saying don't be surprised if it ends up being a bit more of a straight up action game and if not now then in two more sequels.

For example a recharging health bar would eliminate the need for stealth entirely.

Well, if we assume it's Assassin's Creed version of an open city...yeah that'd suck. That being said, I remember in the Metal Age plenty of houses with doors standing wide open that you'd sneak into. So, the precedent is certainly there.

What kind of concerns me is what seems like the absence of sound in the stealth equation. That was one thing really took Thief's gameplay up to a new level.

I feel the need to point out that if Dishonored was just an action game for you...that's more to do with that you chose to slaughter everyone in your path. Wasn't a bad thief-like stealth game with magic if you tried to all-stealth route (which I did on my first playthrough). That and Dishonored was pretty heavily inspired by Thief...

So long as Thief 4 emphasises that combat is a last resort, and encourages stealth and punishes clumsiness, then a good combat system isn't going to be to the game's detriment. So long as they remember "Stealth first", this looks like it could be a damn good Thief game. Of course it could go horribly wrong, but I can point at any upcoming game and say that xD

Remember MorleyDev according to that quote that may or may not exist... they don't want to "force you to be a thief"

If I was to only play one of the existing Thief games, which should it be?
