Fonts: Needed for a Forum Game
« on: March 04, 2013, 10:38:12 pm »

I'm planning a pseudo-ASCII forum game, but I need something.

I could make it all in code tags, but that would look ugly and prevent me from adding colors and whatnot to the individual characters.

Does anyone know of a Bay-12-Forums-recognized font which gives all characters equal size?

What about Courier?  Isn't that's what's used in Emacs and stuff, anyway?

Courier bold is what they use for MSPA. It looks dandy.

Alright, I have some suggestions. Let's put them to the test in a random, crowded shop thingy.

Normal:

┏━━━━━┓
|+!Y3~|
|!,^☏+|
|o[4-+|
|u+m++O
|@/*@,|
┗━━━━━┛

Courier Bold:

┏━━━━━┓
|+!Y3~|
|!,^☏+|
|o[4-+|
|u+m++O
|@/*@,|
┗━━━━━┛

...

┏━━━━━┓
|+!Y3~|
|!,^☏+|
|o[4-+|
|u+m++O
|@/*@,|
┗━━━━━┛

Better.

Let's check that Wikipedia page....

┏━━━━━┓
|+!Y3~|
|!,^☏+|
|o[4-+|
|u+m++O
|@/*@,|
┗━━━━━┛

┏━━━━━┓
|+!Y3~|
|!,^☏+|
|o[4-+|
|u+m++O
|@/*@,|
┗━━━━━┛

┏━━━━━┓
|+!Y3~|
|!,^☏+|
|o[4-+|
|u+m++O
|@/*@,|
┗━━━━━┛

I'm starting to think that those walls are a problem. A lot of these fonts are fine without the wall characters. Let's try Nethackian walls on courier, the one which has worked best so far.

-------
|+!Y3~|
|!,^☏+|
|o[4-+|
|u+m++O
|@/*@,|
-------

Perfect! Now add some effects...
-------
|+
!Y3~|
|
!,^+|
|
o[4-+|
|
u+m++O
|@/*@,|
-------

If I don't quit in irritation, this will be great. Thanks for the help, everyone!

If you make use of the teletype tags, your rooms will be spaced evenly.

Code: [Select]
[tt][/tt]
-------
|+!Y3~|
|!,^☏+|
|o[4-+|
|u+m++O
|@/*@,|
-------

-------
|+
!Y3~|
|
!,^+|
|
o[4-+|
|
u+m++O
|@/*@,|
-------

It even works in combination with the fancy walls.

┏━━━━━┓
|+!Y3~|
|!,^☏+|
|o[4-+|
|u+m++O
|@/*@,|
┗━━━━━┛

None of them are evenly spaced for me.

Is using an ASCII art program an option? Because those provide nice even spacing, and on a black background.

I've used ASCIIdraw during one of my horrible attempts at making a forum game. Unless you need your areas to be editable by players, I recommend it as a good approach, if possibly not the fastest (at least until you get used to it)

Quicker than coloring each symbol using forum code.

Dude, there's isn't a font named Courier Bold. It's just courier, but bold.

┏━━━━━┓
|+!Y3~|
|!,^☏+|
|o[4-+|
|u+m++O
|@/*@,|
┗━━━━━┛

On second thought though, I like Teletype better.

Does anyone know of a Bay-12-Forums-recognized font which gives all characters equal size?
It isn’t the forum that needs to recognize the font, it adds whatever you specify in the tag as a font-family style rule to the text between the tags.

For example:
Code: [Select]
Gleaves and the Ingham leading the Bury west

The above code will generate the following markup.

Code: [Select]
<span style="font-family: foobar;" class="bbc_font">Gleaves and the Ingham leading the Bury west</span>

So the users’ browsers will try (and probably fail) to find the font foobar on the users’ systems and render the text in that font. This means that all the font concerns are client-side.

So what if you want to use a font not everyone has installed? You can specify fallback fonts with a comma separated list. The following code will try to use Linux Libertine first, falling back on Liberation Serif, and finally the user’s default serif font.

Code: [Select]
Gleaves and the Ingham leading the Bury west

You can, of course, use the [/tt] tags, but I thought you might like to know how the tag works.
