I seriously wonder what's different about me, having never experienced the mind-melting that everyone else seems to, even after 48 hours.
Its obviously mutant superpowers.

Because for most people it takes 3 days not 2 to reach the "Incompetency state"

I know I've done 3 days a few times, but never 4.

The worst part? As you stay up for longer and longer periods. Your chances of catching outright insomnia increases.

It probably takes at least 3 days and probably more for most people to really start to feel it.  After pulling an all nighter I usually have some mild hypnagogic hallucinations, but certainly nothing like a detachment from reality.  Just things like hallucinating my computer falling through the desk for an instant, which tend to go away after a short while.  I've never been awake for more than about 36 hours straight though.

Anyway, after being mildly sleep deprived for more than a year now, I can say that the mere thought of going a week without sleep pains me.  I'd never try something like this and doubt that it's possible to do without external influences keeping the OP awake.  I strongly suspect after 3 days or so, sleep is going to happen, willingly or not.

Yea, on day 3 I was barely hallucinating. just some wiggly walls and occasional vertigo. The shadows didn't start walking around until day 5 or so.

So I guess those 3 hours in the middle of my personal record week made all the difference?  That was three days no sleep, 3 hours of sleep the fourth night, and then three more days no sleep.  Never hallucinated.  I felt fried, but was not irrational.

I was not entirely irrational either. I could write software and research papers. I could even hold a conversation if the other person was willing to repeat every sentence 2 or 3 times before they expect a response.

I'd say no, besides stimulants don't give you energy. They force your body to use up its energy.

It would be a quick way to nuclearly bomb him from space.

'Energy' isn't really a single thing, and there are some stimulants that render you completely unable to sleep (not that I'd suggest taking any of them for a week straight).

After a week? I don't think so.
I have a very good tolerance for sleep deprivation; the longest I've gone without sleep is three days during weekdays. A big factor to consider is if you'll be doing any work - taxing your brain is a sure way to get you to quite literally fall unconscious, getting comfy/complacent a sure way to fall unconscious. In any case it'll make you feel like crap, coffee does nothing, drink plenty of water and eat much bread.

I seriously wonder what's different about me, having never experienced the mind-melting that everyone else seems to, even after 48 hours.
If you're used to it do you notice when it's there? Do you retreat into subconscious safety?
From personal experience 48 hours is physically exhausting and impairs thought/judgement, but it's beyond 3 days when stuff that can only be described as literal daydreaming happens.
In short, Misko, stop please.

If you cannot be persuaded away from this madness, get a long TV show running prepared. The entirety of Doctor Who or Game of Thrones for example.

I've had my own stints of not sleeping for 24-3672 hours... never hallucinated.  Just the tiredness and extreme slowness associated with it.  Cause seriously, processing power grinds to a snails pace.

EDIT: Blargh, meant  72 hours/3 days.  Not sure how I got 36.

48 hours isn't terrible. I can still fake energy at that point. Never made it to 72.

Good luck, Misko.
