Crawl's 32x32 tileset is the only Roguelike tileset I like, although it only looks good if the game's interface was made for it (Transplanting Crawl's tileset onto Nethack makes for an ugly interface).

ASCII is best and Angband's is beautiful.

Oh man. Just encountered my old nightmare in Chengband: Room Full of Worm Masses. When you're surrounded on all sides by Worm Masses, it's usually time to give up.

Never forget the stairs.  Also wait until you find hummerhorns and neekerbreekers.

Really in general there are a lot of monsters you shouldn't even bother fighting unless there's something in it for you.  Like I said, whenever you get onto a level, detect monster, detect treasure, detect traps, and decide if there's something worth getting on the level.  Monsters that don't drop loot generally aren't worth killing.  Had I been smart I wouldn't have fought that beholder I mentioned, or even stayed on its level.

Angband... what a game. It is one of my life goals to beat it some day.

My best character was a Dwarf Rogue, character level 41, dungeon level 57. I loved that dwarf. We went through so much together. I had just found a Ring of Speed and was destroying everything I came across with ease. But then

This is my first character. I thought I was supposed to die more often.

For anyone not used to have to learn hundred of key commands, i recommend to give a try to ZangbandTK (one of the variant contained in Omniband) , the interface is much better with nearly all commands available in mouse driven menus.

Is there another Angband variant that is using the ZanbandTK interface ?

You're only level 25.  Come back when you reach 50.

You're level 25 without any ego weapons or armor? Either the game has changed or you're being too timid. Dive a bit!

That shit's small time dude.  What's your lowest Dungeon level?  That's what matters.  And what loose nut said, why dont' you have any real gear?  Spend a few minutes sub-D40 like that and then we'll talk.

Or even D20, I bet you don't have free action either.

EDIT:  God I forgot how bad the Angband comic is.  It shouldn't be allowed to exist.

What a nice present to find on dungeon level 4 like just ten minutes into the game. Maybe it's an omen.

2 minutes later on DL5 next to a pile or +7, +2 arrows. I've never been this lucky with low-level egos before.

Just found the phial and slain Orfax, son of boldor a bit lower than DL:10 , that explosive yeek filled room was a bit hilarious, poor buggers.

Great way to get rid of all those torches/lanterns i needed to refill periodically.

Now if only i could find some better armor/weapons.

I'm trying to compile this for Windows. Following one guide doesn't work, and following the other there are files missing (.dll and .lib). I'm sure I'm making some common mistake here; does anyone know what it is?

Why... do you need to compile it? I can run it just fine on 7 x64.

The latest version is only precompiled with graphics and I want it both ways.

EDIT: Found the .dll files, still unaware of the whereabouts of the .lib files.
EDIT2: Nope, found those too. But the instructions are not for the program I'm using. Sometimes I make the pegs fit but this is not one of those times.
EDIT3: lolnope, still missing two .lib files. I probably didn't include them properly anyway. I give up. This is silly.
To be clear, I am using the guide included with the source pack. This guide tells you to find files that do not exist.

The phial is one of those artifacts that's pretty much guaranteed to show up in your inventory.  I have no idea why, but I think of all the games I've played that have the phial, the times I've not-found it I can count on one hand.
