I played a variant called Drangband ages upon ages ago.  And no, it's not "Doctor Angband."  It's Dragon-Angband.  There were several dragons as playable races, which was really cool.

I don't remember the exact details any more, but you got...I think 10 rings, no armor slots (armor went up with level instead), and a breathweapon.

I've definitely played more variants than I have played vanilla and probably more ToME than anything. It was also the first roguelike I ever got into so it has a place in my heart. Actually I think what got me into roguelikes was a game called DnD that I got from some BBS. Also Castle of the Winds might have got me into roguelikes before I got heavy into Angband and it's variants.

I've never been that much of a fan of 'vanilla' Angband, as I have an irrational prejudice against games with fixed character classes. However I have spent quite a lot of time playing Sangband (Skills Angband,) a variant that replaces classes with a detailed system of skills and Oaths (that allow you to specialise in particular field.)

It's kind of similar to Crawl, though not as well thought out (and no dungeon branches, just the standard 100 level dungeon.) Unlike Crawl, it also has a complex item-forging system that allows you to make up to artifact-grade equipment using components found in the dungeon.

I only played the actual Angband once, and never really got into it.

TomeNET, however, is a whole 'nother story. Love that game, it combines action and roguelike in an awesome way, while keeping the classic feel of the game. And then it throws in other players to team up with. Just love it.

My first contact with Angband was with ZangbandTK that i found on reloaded
http://www.reloaded.org/download/ZangbandTK/46/

But at some point of my system upgrades, it simply wasn't working anymore and sadly the dev wasn't working on it anymore and kinda disappeared.

Fortunately a time came in which i discovered that the dev had worked on a new version, Omniband that had some nice mouse friendly interface (and had ZangbandTK in it too)

Unfortunately he disappeared again.

TOME3 and the new TOME are the only Angband variants I've played.  I've considered making a Tolkein-Free Angband, removing all the Tolkein references.  I kind of feel like they detract from the game, considering they're basically cameos and you kill them, and also you've got people like Gabriel the Fucking Archangel running around.  The gameplay is so far removed from Tolkein that the references could be excised without changing it at all.

It has been a long time since I played Angband, but it was fun.  I vividly recall digging the dungeon walls to get more loot, and thinking it was quite innovative for that.

Oh man, angband, easily my favorite of the older roguelikes. I recall some skill based angband I ended up playing, I think it was Sangband? It's been a while. Might have to jump back in now that there's a thread to cry to whenever I get smacked around by something.

Angband was my first roguelike. If I'd never played it, I'd have never gotten into DF, that's for sure. :)

Uh oh!  Crossed the infamous 2000' horizon without rPois (CL33DL40, amateur as far as dives go but probably more than I was ready for).  Tried to killdudes a beholder without checking it out in the spoilers (don't do that.  Also, just detect treasure and monster.  Don't just run around in an unexplored dungeon level when you're OOD), somehow beat it but it drained basically all of my staff charges and nearly killed me.  I'm in a touchy wpot now, it'll take some doing to get myself back on track.  I'll probably make a run back from DL1 and try to get some new wands and staves.

Never actually played Angband. I should probably try it out at some point.

Been replaying a bit the game, and found rather early an "Ancient Gold Dragon corpse"
I remember in the past having found such thing, but having no idea what to do of it, so as i found one i googled a bit and found nothing.

Is this kind of item having any use or should i just sell it if possible somewhere in town ?

S'far as I know. You could, uh. Eat it. Maybe. I don't recall angband having anything special in regards to corpses. Maybe do some code diving, or make a copy of the save and full ID it via wizard mode or somethin'?

I haven't seen a single corpse in Angband, I don't know what's up there.
