Protagonistium: A Case Study
The Hero RTD
It's the 1980's. There's insane hair, glam rock, Madonna, Micheal Jackson, and E.T. Oh, yeah and the whole threat of thermonuclear war in between the USSR and the United States. I suppose that's the most important thing. After all, it actually has to do with the game. So, the Cold War. You and your allies are, unfortunately, right in the middle of it.
For some reason or another, you were nearby the fall of an all-american hero, more commonly referred to through the world as a protagonist. When they died, they left behind a neon blue, glowing gel, which slowly seeped into you. Then, you felt your consciousness fade to black. When you woke up, you found yourself, and a group of other people laying in a hospital bed, with a man in a lab coat speaking to you.

Now, we here at the Agency for the Investigation of Unusual and Rare Materials are certain you remember your incident, seeing how memorable and life changing it was. But, as tends to happen with protagonistium incidents, you may have forgotten what had happened to you. So, we're going to provide you with a quick run down of what happened.
You folks were red shirts, red shirts being our term for average people. You were deployed to a smaller, more vulnerable country alongside a protagonist, someone born with a certain element called Protagonistium. This element lets the person possessing it perform amazing feats of agility, charisma, strength, endurance and intelligence. So, this is where the data gets fuzzy, but somehow, the protagonist was killed, and his protagonistium seeped into you. Don't get too excited though, you each only have 1/4 of what he had at his death, so you can't pull off anything quite as exciting as an average protagonist. But, there's also four of you.
On a related note, the reason we're studying you, and not another protagonist, is because something like this has never happened before. Usually, when a protagonist dies, their protagonistium fades away. You somehow managed to both cement it in this plane, and absorb it, which is remarkable to say the least. So, we're going to send you to try and defeat other protagonists, in case you're able to absorb theirs as well. Fortunately enough, we already have a mission ready for you. Down south, there's a socialist rebellion going on. We suspect that it may be led by a protagonist, or at least has one involved somewhere along the line. So, we're going to pack you down there.
Protagonistium has many odd qualities, of which its ability to increase someones skills and physical attributes are but one. For example, it has been found to generate a secondary element, known as Preposterium, with the ability to actually bend the laws of physics and probability, letting someone accomplish some acts which most would consider impossible. Interestingly enough, the appendix is used for this task, converting excess food and other miscellaneous matter into both Preposterium and Protagonistium.
